Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls consist of three sections. The

large Canadian falls—with their distinctive curved

shape—are also known as the Horseshoe Falls. They are separated by Goat Island from the American Falls, which are separated from the narrow Bridal Veil Falls by a small island at their south end. Each

side of the falls offers a different perspective, and it is always best to visit both sides to maximize your experience.

Views of Niagara Falls are free and accessible. Access to the riverside walks and parks offer great views. You can walk across to Goat Island on the bridge on foot.

Cave of the Winds, ? +1 716 278-1730. Daily 9 AM-7:30 PM from Spring 2016. A lift takes you 175 feet down to a walkway that leads you right to the bottom of the Bridal Veil Falls. You will definitely get a feel for the true power of the falls! This is the closest you can get to the falls on either side without actually leaping into them! Raincoats and slippers are provided, and you will definitely need them. Adults: $12; 6-12 year: $8; younger children: Free, but must be 42 inches or taller.

Maid of the Mist. A boat ride, taking you down around the bottom of the falls. Some information is given about the falls, but the real experience is looking up at the falls from below and feeling the mist coming off the falls (hence the name). Wear a raincoat to avoid getting wet. Boats leave from both the American and Canadian sides, so you may want to check the exchange rates to see which will be more cost-effective when you visit! April-October.

The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Although it‘s easy to enjoy the falls visually, the Discovery Center provides another way to appreciate the magnificence of the falls. Exhibits show the history of the entire area, including the falls, how they were originally formed, and how they've changed over time.

During the winter season, a lot of repair work of the falls, tours, and surroundings takes place. Many areas, such as Terrapin Point and Luna Island, are closed due to slippery conditions. Winter brings a different kind of beauty to the falls and a visit during that time is certainly worthwhile, but if you want to experience the full range, plan to come in the warmer months.

Communication can be a tricky business, whether it‘s your profession or you're just exchanging words and ideas with your fellow humans. A true story about science fiction that was accidentally reported as fact a century ago is proof positive.

A little fault and a lot of imagination misled science writers for decades. The error may still be fuelling people‘s fascination with the planet Mars today, suggests Walt Hickey in https://www.wendangku.net/doc/0f195885.html,.

It all started with a simple mistranslation. In 1877, the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli claimed to have seen channels running along the surface of the planet Mars. In Italian, he wrote about these ―canali‖—a word mistranslated in English publications as ―canals.‖Schiaparelli later said the channels were an illusion that he saw incorrectly. But before that happened, the canals became a reality—of sorts.

In 1894,Percival Lowell, a wealthy Bostonian heard about Schiaparelli‘s alleged canals and became inspired. He built the Lowell Observatory, an observatory in Arizona (that still exists today) and used it to look at Mars. He, too, saw the canals—and began developing a theory of life on Mars. The canals, he said, were actual irrigation systems built by Martians. In 1895, Lowell wrote about it for The Atlantic Monthly.

Science editors and writers were into it. Lowell‘s speculations grew to be accepted as scientific observations. ―Indeed, even The Gray Lady went head over heels for Martian fan fiction,‖ Hickey writes of the New York Times.

For example, in a 1906 story, Lilian Whiting declared with certainty that there is life on the planet Mars, basing her story on Lowell‘s ―findings.‖ Her story began:

The legions(大量的)of canals on Mars, forming a colossal and a wisely planned system designed to irrigate the cases of the vast deserts which make up the surface of this planet, are an unanswerable argument for the existence of conscious intelligent life.

And she was not alone in relying on this source. Lowell was also behind a 1911 story by Mary Proctor published in the Times.

Proctor reported that based on drawings and sightings Lowell claimed to have made from an observatory in Arizona, Martians completed two new massive canals in two years. ―Vast engineering works accomplished in an incredibly short time by our planetary neighbors—Wonders of the September Sky,‖ Proctor wrote.

Others continued to cover the canals-on-Mars theory as established science. For example, James Young covered Mars in 1911for the New York Times and discussed the possibility of building a similar network of canals in the Sahara Desert.

When Lowell died in 1916, his theories had their critics. But his supposed Martian proof-of-life—by then totalling some 550 canals—was considered sufficiently legitimate to deserve uncritical coverage in his New York Times obituary (讣告).

58. Of all the people mentioned in the passage,______believed in the existence of canals on Mars.

B. five

C. six

D. seven

59.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

C

Last year Congress issued a moral call to action when it ordered the National Institutes of Health to reevaluate its ethical oversight (伦理上的疏忽) of government-funded primate (灵长类) research. Although the scientific community widely sees nonhuman primates as essential for advances in biomedicine (they have caused major gains in the fights against AIDS and neurological diseases such as Parkinson‘s, for example), researchers agree more can be done to treat the animals more humanely and conduct research less wastefully. To that end, the NIH gathered famous scientists last September to discuss the future of primate-based research—and they agreed that data sharing is the way forward.

Researchers could reduce experiments on nonhuman primates by studying data that have already been collected to answer new questions, says David O‘Connor, a pathologist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. O‘Connor is walking the walk: his laboratory studies the Zika virus in primates, and he immediately posts all the results online. The goal is to figure out ways to fight Zika as quickly as possible without placing an undue burden on research primates. The Seattle-based Allen Institute for Brain Science, which uses rhesus macaques, small South Asian monkeys, to study the molecular basis of brain development, also makes all results public. O‘Connor says this practice should be more widespread so that ―researchers who are using this scarce but vital resource can learn as much as possible from as f ew animals as necessary.‖ Still, he is skeptical that data sharing will catch on because it would require a change in ―normative behavior‖—science‘s strong culture of secrecy, in which data are kept under wraps until they are published in a peer-reviewed journal. One step toward full transparency is to follow the lead of human clinical trials, says Christine Grady, a bioethicist at the NIH. U.S. law requires most clinical trials to register online and make their results public, even if a study fails or is inconclusive. This ensures that other researchers can learn from a trial regardless of its results—a move that could also safeguard primates against being used for the same thing twice. Nancy Haigwood, director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center, also says data sharing is ―the way of the future.‖ Her center hosts 4,800 primates to study a variety of human diseases. She currently contributes results from her center to O‘Connor‘s Web site. ―I don‘t see a drawback,‖ she says. ―We have to share data more quickly.‖

62. What does Congress think of the primate research?

A. It has done a great deal of good to advances in biomedicine.

B. Proper attention should be given to treating primates humanely.

C. Primate-based research must be stopped for moral reasons.

D. It is a huge waste of money to conduct research on primates.

63. The underlined phrase ―walking the walk‖ in Paragraph 2 shows that O‘Connor _______.

A. is the leader in fighting Zika virus in primates

B. is walking away from his own responsibility

C. is carrying out what he has said he should do

D. is taking a tough road when posting his data

64. According to O‘Connor, what might prevent scientists from sharing their data?

A. The fear that they will be laughed at if a study fails or is inconclusive.

B. The fact that scientists are reluctant to change their way of research.

C. The requirement that most clinical trials should be registered online.

D. The deep-rooted culture that data should be kept secret until published.

65. What could be the best title for the passage?

A. The Merciless Practice of Primate Research

B. To Treat Primates More Humanely: Transparency

C. To Abandon Experiments on Primates: Final Goal

D. The Burden of Research on Nonhuman Primates

Gamblers (赌徒)at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. Epicurus, a Greek philosopher, pursued it by living only in pleasant society and eating only dry bread for the sake of his poor health, with a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but something more nutritious would be needed for most people, for whom the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented (补充)in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life.

We imagine ourselves more different from the animals than we are. Animals live on impulse (冲动),and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable. A cat will enjoy life if it has food and warmth and opportunities for an occasional night on the roof. Your needs are more complex than those of a cat, but they still have their basis related to nature. In civilized societies, especially in English-speaking societies, this is too likely to be forgotten. People propose to themselves some topmost objective, and prevent all impulses that do not seem to serve it. A businessman may be so anxious to grow rich that he sacrifices health and private affections . When at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except annoying other people by inspirations to imitate his noble example. Many rich ladies, although nature has not qualified them with any spontaneous (自发的)pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism (势利).

If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common. The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. Also, many men devote their weekends to voluntary and unpaid labor in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty.

The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too seriously. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been led to unhappiness by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic (补药)when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife faithless, his children‘s noise unbearable, and the office a nig htmare; if in the daytime he longs for

night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new lifestyle 一 a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.

Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a simple conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any imaginable change of philosophy.

66. What does the author think of Epicurus' way of pursuing happiness?

A. It deserves wide recognition.

B. It helps gamblers pursue money.

C. It is suitable for a few individuals.

D. It is adequate as a personal rule of life.

67. From the passage, we can learn _________ .

A. animals tend to be content with basic requirements

B. animals live in harmony with nature like humans

C. humans should learn to avoid high expectations

D. humans can find pleasure without thinking too much

68. The businessman mentioned in the passage _________ .

A. succeeds in inspiring people around him

B. ends up with wealth but little happiness

C. makes efforts to meet basic requirements

D. attaches little importance to his life goal

69. According to the passage, what do happy people have in common?

A. They get satisfaction from their worthwhile activities.

B. They expect both family happiness and career success.

C. They possess the spirit of sacrifice without any reward.

D. They are good at reading some fashionable new books.

70. What‘s the author‘s opinion of life philosophy?

A. Philosophy is generally based on one‘s physiology.

B. Philosophy plays a more important role than lifestyle.

C. Philosophy will determine how happy people feel.

D. Philosophy shouldn‘t be stressed too much in our life.

To make our digestive (消化的) system work well, we should avoid doing some things after having a meal, for example, drinking water. It is true that a person should drink 8 glasses of water every day to stay healthy. However, drinking water right after eating or even during a meal may disrupt (扰乱) digestion. It might affect on the natural levels of acid and bile (酸和胆汁) that are necessary for proper digestion. What‘s more, drinking cold water after eating might slow down digestion. So try to avoid drinking water at least an hour after a meal, and avoid drinking it while eating.

Though walking after eating is healthy, doing it immediately after a meal is not. Doing so will make it difficult for the digestive system to take in nutrients from the food. Besides, the blood will flow towards other parts of the body, like legs, hands, etc., which will make the digestive tract

not have enough amount of blood flow that is needed for proper digestion. So we should wait for at least 2 hours after eating, and then begin exercising.

Sleeping should also be avoided right after eating. This is because going to bed right after a meal will lead to improper digestion. What‘s more, such a habit will also make you put on a lot of weight. Therefore, wait for an hour or two, and then go to sleep.

Many of us have the habit of drinking tea just after lunch or dinner, which is really unhealthy. The tea leaves are rich in acid which prevents the protein in the food from digesting. The best time to drink tea is at least one hour after eating.

Eating fruits right after a meal may fill the stomach with air and cause discomfort. They will also take time to reach the digestive tract, disturbing the entire process of digestion. To protect your stomach from digestive problems, eat fruits before or after 1-2 hours of a meal.

In a word, if you avoid doing all the above things after eating, you will surely make your digestion easy, and you will be less likely to have digestive problems.

It was 7: 30 in the morning. As usual I was on the subway to school. It was so crowded with people that it felt like the air conditione r wasn‘t working. I was standing there looking around. Then, I saw an old lady get on the subway with a 7—year—old child who seemed to be her grandson.

A warm—hearted gentleman generously offered his seat to the old lady. Instead of sitting down herself, however, the old lady called her grandson over and told him to sit.

Sooner or later, children mature and step into the complicated world. Love is necessary in the early development of children, yet, to the disappointment of many, too much love definitely prevents children from learning the rules of the real world. Teaching the child about the rules of society within the family helps the child to achieve success later. By giving up seats to their children, grandparents may destroy kids‘ best chance for chara cter development.

This passage mainly talks about the importance of character development of children by giving an example of an old lady who gives up the seat offered by a gentleman to her grandchild.

It‘s common in our country that parents or grandparents often spoil the kids. For example, parents or grandparents will buy shoes of famous brands to satisfy their needs, no matter how expensive they are. What‘s worse, they provide kids with whatever they want and ask them to do nothing in return.

When these spoiled children grow up, many of them may greatly disappoint their parents. Some of them even commit crimes. If it happens, who is to blame? I think parents or grandparents are not supposed to spoil kids. Kids should go through hardships and do what they can to help their parents or other people. Only by doing so can they be independent and responsible.
