Albert Einstein, the genius behind the theory of relativity , which provided a new framework for all of physics and proposed new concepts of space and time, has recently been making headlines again. However this time it is not for a new scientific breakthrough, but because of two handwritten notes the scientist gave a bellboy(侍者)95 years ago.

The story goes something like this. In October1922, Einstein was invited to Tokyo to deliver lectures. As the scientist was making his way from Europe to Japan, he received a telegram informing him that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Though pleased at the news, he decided to continue with his Japanese trip instead of heading to Stockholm to accept the honor.

w hen in Tokyo, he penned two notes in German. One of them, written on a piece of plain paper, said,‘’Where there's a will, there's a way.”

Why did Einstein write the notes? Some believe they were to express Einstein's delight at the reception he received from the people of Japan who crowded to attend the scientist's lectures. Others think they were

specially written for a bellboy who came to deliver a message, either because the scientist did not have loose change to tip him, or because the messenger refused to accept tips. Regardless of the reason, Einstein purportedly(据称)told the bellboy,‘’Maybe if you are lucky, those notes will become much more valuable than just a regular tip." He was right!

Earlier this year, the bellboy's nephew decided to part with the letters and handed them to Winner's Auctions and Exhibitions. The" theory of happiness" brought the owner an astonishing $1.56 million from a European buyer. The second note, which opened at $ I,000, and expected to fetch a maximum of $6,000, sold for $240,000!

5.What made Einstein become people's focus again?

A. The theory of relativity.

B. His new concepts of space.

C. The notes written by himself.

D. His notes about his theory.

6. Where did Einstein write the words?

B. Stockholm.

C. Germany.

D. Japan.

7. How were Einstein's lectures?

A. They had a little effect.

B. They attracted a lot of people.

C. They successfully inspired people.

D. They were hard to understand.

8. How might the owner of the notes feel about the deal?

A. Disappointed.

B. Curious.

C. Unfair.

D. Unexpected.

If you are sleeping six or fewer hours per night, you're not doing your health any favors. A new study finds that getting the recommended seven to nine hours sleep per night may help you tame(抑制) your sweet tooth.

Researchers at Ki ng’s College London found"short sleepers"— that is, people sleep less than seven hours per night. The participants were coached in ways of making sleep time longer, such as cutting back on caffeine, reducing screen time and sticking to a regular bedtime each night.

The coaching worked. And there's the fascinating part: They also changed their diets ---without being asked."We found that they reduced their intake of added sugars by about10 grams per day," explains one of

the study authors, Haya Ai Khatib. That’s about 40 calories' worth of sugar, which is not a huge change, But over time. a small, daily decline in sugary foods could make a difference.

However the study is small. It included just 42 normal-weight participants, and it doesn't show how sleep can lead to diet changes But the findings serve up more evidence that our sleep can influence our eating habits and waistlines. A study published back in 2013 found that just five days of shortened sleep can lead to weight gain. In that study, people were allowed to sleep for Just five hours for a five-day period. They gained, on average, almost 2 pounds.

And as we've known, the timing of meals-— independent of sleep— can also influence how our bodies respond to all the calories we eat. For instance, a study found that people who eat their dinner between 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm are more successful at losing weight, compared with people who eat a late-night meal.

It seems we humans are timekeeping machines.

9.What does the underlined part"sweet tooth" refer to?

A. Honeyed words.

B. Love of unhealthy foods.

C. A great affection for sweet foods.

D. Bad teeth caused by eating sweets.

10. How did the researchers help change the participants' diets?

A. By making them sleep more.

B. By improving their self-control.

C.By meeting certain requirements. D By controlling their sugar intake.

11. What do we know about the new study?

A. Its findings are reliable.

B. It is based on a 2013 study

C. Its participants are researchers.

D. It is about why we change diets.

12.. What is the right way to keep our health according to the text?

A. Doing extra exercise to lose some weight.

B. Taking a break during our day-time work.

C. Avoiding eating high-calorie food anytime.

D. Forming regular sleeping and eating habits.

D

Endurance events(耐力赛)have excited the imagination of an increasing number of runners, climbers and mountaineers. Social and traditional media have helped create attention for these men and women. In the past, the competitors might not be well known, but now they can earn money from company sponsorships.

There is a long history of people setting out to set speed records. For years, sailors have attempted to set records for sailing around the world. Swimmers have successfully crossed the English Channel since 1875. And now simply climbing to the top of Mount Everest is not enough. Some climbers want to see if they can be the fastest at reaching the top.

"1 think it's a natural human tendency to keep pushing back the human boundaries for what's possible--- like trying to set a world record," said Peter Bakwin, a runner who created a website for listing records. Runs and climbs that once took months, weeks and days are now being completed in only weeks, days and hours.

Bakwin was the first person known to run the Muir Trail in under four days. The Muir Trail travels along some of the most beautiful parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. On foot, the trip normally takes two to three weeks to complete. Bakwin said he ran about 80 kilometers a day, and only took short breaks to sleep. The third day was the hardest.''What have I gotten myself into?" he thought then. On that night he decided to climb to the top of a mountain under a full moon."It was magical," he recalled."It's hard to explain the attraction of pushing your limits of endurance in nature. Some people get it and some people think it's totally crazy." However, his best time did not last even a year.

13. What do we know about endurance events?

A. They are getting more public attention.

B. Most competitors are not well known.

C. More competitors can not earn money.

D. They are particularly popular among men.

14. How did Bakwin feel when it was on the third day of his running the Muir Trail?

A. Excited.

B. Nervous.

C. Satisfied. D Regretful.

15. Which of the following will Bakwin agree with?

A. Everyone wants to set a world record.

B. He is the fastest at running the Muir Trail

C. They don't know why they like challenges.

D. Not all people can understand their pleasure.
