Comment on Mark Twain---Mirror of America The passage is a feature article Noel Grove wrote for National Geographic. It tells us the entire life of Mark Twain briefly: the early life in Mississippi River, the experience of a newspaper reporter, some famous works of Mark Twain and something about his families and so on. The author used these to show us another aspect of Mark Twain--a person who grew cynical, bitter, saddened, who obsessed with the frailties of the human race and who was despair.

There are several writing styles of the article: first, combine the life story with Mark Twain's literary career; second, rich in figures of speeches. As a feature article, it is about geography and organized on the geographical map of Mark Twain's life, it is about various aspects related to the central subject of geography including people, culture, environmental issues, history, etc. It will show us all of these through the description of Mark Twain's experience.

In early days, Mark Twain stayed in a steamboat in Mississippi River as a river pilot for several years. He was familiar with the pioneering humanity as well as the flotsam of hustlers, gamblers, and thugs. The river had acquainted him with all kinds of types of human nature. Therefore, he wrote many people about Mississippi River, his Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn drew on his boyhood and early life on the river. After he left the steamboat, he had come to the Nevada's

Washoe regions, the Sacramento Valley, the West Coast, California, San Francisco, New York City, Europe, the Holy Land, Hartford, etc. He also wrote The Innocents Abroad in his travel in Europe and the Holy Land. Actually, in the most of Mark Twain's works he shared his experience in those places with readers so that the author called him the mirror of America.

As a description, the author used many figures of speeches. For example, the metaphor, "who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night", in this sentence, the author used the black wall to imply Mark Twain was despair and hopeless, which made the sentence more vividly. It also used alliteration, antithesis, euphemism, personification and so on.

In this article, the author through combined the life story with Mark Twain's literary career to show us a cynical, bitter, saddened and despair Twain as well as romantic and humorous.
