Passage 1

There is a long history behind the first T-shirts and today’s colorful outerwear (外套).

Many stories talk about the first T-shirts and the reason why people wear them. One says the first T-shirts had something to do with war.

In World War I

Some American soldiers found that European soldiers’ undershirts (汗衫) were cooler and more comfortable. They started to wear the same kind. Because the design of the undershirts was simple and looked like the letter T, Americans called the clothes T-shirts.

By World War II

Many soldiers started to wear T-shirts as underwear.

In the 1930s

Many American students started wearing white T-shirts for playing sports.

In 1951

Marlon Brando, a very famous American actor, wore a tight-fitting (紧身的) T-shirt in a film.

After this, many American men started to dress like him.

T-shirts became the favorite kind of clothing for young people in many countries. At that time, they were a sign of being cool and different from others.

In the 1980s

T-shirts started to be hot in China.

Now many young people show their own ideas on their T-shirts: special pictures, funny words ... T-shirts are more like artworks than just simple summer wear.

Passage 2

Mr. Rhodes was a lollipop man. He was the STOP-GO man who worked on the road gang(修路队) for Acacia Grove Council. He had a very important job. He was the person who controlled the traffic when the road gang was doing important road repairs. He was the person who let the drivers know when to STOP and when to GO.

To do this he had a long pole with a round sign on the top. The green side had GO written on it. The other side was red with the word STOP. Mr. Rhodes would stand in the middle of the road and turn the sign one way, then the other, to give the cars and trucks and buses turns when passing the road gang at work.

Mr. Rhodes had to wear special clothes with bright orange markings.

His sign looked like a big lollipop. Some people called Mr. Rhodes the Lollipop Man, but drivers knew what to do when they saw the sign -- STOP or GO. By obeying the sign the drivers knew they could pass safely. It was important that cars and trucks were not damaged.

Sometimes the road gang filled pot holes, sometimes they picked up rubbish, sometimes they repainted road markings and sometimes they fixed signs.

For really dangerous work the road gang used orange traffic cones to guide the traffic around the road works. If it was a really long section of road works Mr. Rhodes had someone to help him. Mr. Rhodes and his helper would stand at opposite ends of the road works. They had to make sure their signs gave the right instructions. If one sign said STOP the other sign would say GO. They didn’t want any accident.
