We live in the “Computer Age.” Just 35 years ago, computers couldn’t do much. They were huge and costly. They used a lot of energy. Only a few people were interested in them. Today computers are smaller and cheaper. They can do some amazing things.

Computers have become important for many reasons. They work faster than humans and make fewer mistakes. They can “remember” huge amounts of information. A computer can solve millions of problems in a few seconds. A person might need years to solve the same number of problems.

Computers are used in nearly every kind of work. Police use them to check on stolen cars. Companies use them to keep track of supplies. Planes and trains are guided by computers. So are telephone calls and traffic lights. Small computers are being used in schools and homes. In 1981 there were about 30,000 computers in our classrooms. Today there are over 700,000 computers in our classrooms.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They work very well. They made people healthier and let them live lo ng lives. By the 1960’s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.

By this time most of people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world is known to man but the stars are not yet. 第1题:

Now comes July, and with it examinations; but these are soon finished and with them ends the school year. Boys and girls have nearly two months’ holiday before them as they leave school by train and car to return home to their fathers and mothers.

The summer holidays are the best part of the year for most children. The weather is usually good, so that one can spend most of one’s time playing in the garden or, if one lives in the country, out in the woods and fields. Even if one lives in a big town, one can usually go to a park to play.

The best place for a summer holiday, however, is the seaside. Some children are lucky enough to live near the sea, but for the others who do not, a week or two at one of the big seaside towns is something which they will talk about for the whole of the following year.

In England, it is not only the rich who can take their children to the seaside; if a factory worker or a bus driver, a street cleaner or a waiter wants to take his wife and children to Southend or Margate, Blackpool or Clacton, he is usually quite able to do so.

Now, what is it that children like so much about the seaside? I think it is the sand, sea and sun more than any other things. Of course, there are lots of new things to see, nice things to eat, and exciting things to do, but it is the feeling of sand under one’s feet, of salt water on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s back that makes the seaside what it is.

c. by bike

d. by either train or car

第2题: Kangaroos (袋鼠) are amazing animals! They have a pair of muscular hind legs(后腿) that can be 10 times larger than their front legs. They have a long, strong tail that they use for balancing when they move around. They don’t run, but they hop (跳)swiftly – with a top speed of 40 miles per hour, they can cover a distance of over 30 feet and reach a height of more than 10 feet in a single jump!

There are over 50 different species of kangaroos, which can be divided into two groups – large and small. Large kangaroos include many familiar races, such as red kangaroos, gray kangaroos and wallabie. Red Kangaroos are the biggest of any Kangaroos. They can stand up 6 feet tall and weigh over 200 pounds! Small kangaroos consist of bettongs, rat kangaroos, and potoroos.

Kangaroos inhabit a variety of environments, but most of them live in grasslands and open woodlands. They can only be found in Australia, New Guinea, and neighbouring islands like Tasmania. Grass, leaves, and herbs (草本植物) are the diet for most kangaroo species(物种).

One funny fact about kangaroos is how they got their name! When European explorers had their first encounter with this strange-looking, hopping animal, they asked a native Australian what it was called. He replied, “Kangaroo”. This word actuall y meant, “I don’t understand 「your question」.” The explorers thought “Kangaroo” was the animal’s name, and that is how kangaroos got their name!

d. It can reach a height of more than 10 feet in a single hop.

第3题:Obviously television has both advantages and disadvantages. In the first place, television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, b ut also a comparatively cheap one. With a TV set in the family people don’t have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre, the cinema, or the opera. Some people, however, think that this is where the danger lies. The television viewers need to do nothing. He does not even have to use his legs if he has a remote control. He makes no choice and exercises no judgment. He is completely passive and has everything presented to him without any effort on

his part.

Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events and the latest developments in science and politics. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right into one’s sitting room. It could be argued that the radio performs this service as well; but on television everything is much more living, much more real. Yet here again there is a danger. The television screen itself has a terrible, almost physical charm for us. We get so used to looking at the movements on it, so dependent on its pictures that it begins to control our lives. People are often heard to say that their television sets have broken down and that they have suddenly found that they have far more time to do things and that they have actually begun to talk to each other again. It makes one think, doesn’t it?

There are many other arguments for and against television. We must realize that television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is the users that determines its value to society.

1、What is the major function of paragraph 1? B

a.To arouse the reader’s concern.

b.To introduce the theme of the whole passage.

c. how we use it

d. when we use it

3、One of the most obvious advantages of TV is that ___A___. a

a. it keeps us informed

b. it is very cheap

c. it enables us to have a rest

d. it controls our lives

第4题: Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, experts estimate that nearly two thirds of the world's population live within eighty kilometers of the seacoast.

In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to grow less. The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man's needs.

The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology are impressive. Oil and gas exploration have existed for nearly thirty years. Valuable amounts of minerals such as manganese锰, iron, nickel镍and copper铜exist on the ocean floor, ready to be mined.

Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental peoples.

Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy such as hydroelectric水力电气的power.

Technology is enabling man to explore ever deeper under the sea. The new undersea technology is providing divers with diving suits and undersea chambers that are kept at sea-level pressure. The development of strong new materials has made this possible.

The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. By the year 2000, experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

第5题: It was during his fourth term in the Illinois legislature(州议会) that the rising young lawyer politician (Abraham Lincoln) met Mary Todd, the woman who, despite his promise to himself never to get married, was to become his wife and be with him –“for better or worse, in sickness and in health” – till the day of his death.

She was not like any of the girls he had known before. 第6题:

England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.

Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the south-west, which consists of the counties of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf stream flows across the North Atlantic ocean for the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the south-west quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo and many semi-tropical plants grow well in the south-west of England, flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England’s most popular holiday areas.

1、In the north of England and the Midlands, _____D____. d

a.it is cold and wet all the year round

b.the climate is pleasant as a whole

c.it is warm most of the time in a year

d.only the summer is not cold and wet

c. one hundred and fifty miles

d. six hundred miles

4、England is a country _____D______. d

a. with a cold and wet climate

b. with a surprising climate

c. with a pleasant climate

d. with a variety of climates

5、According to the passage, _____________.

A、flowers and vegetables from Devon are on the market one month earlier

B、farmers in the southwest grow as many vegetables and flowers as farmers elsewhere

C、people in the southwest have to pay a higher price for vegetables and flowers

D、vegetables in Cornwall ripen as much as a month earlier than flowers
