The Celebration of Western Festival

In contemporary China, western festivals traditionally celebrated by foreigners in western countries are now enjoying increasingly high popularity among us Chinese people. For instance, these days almost all the people around me are planning on how to celebrate the coming Christmas and “Merry Christmas” can be heard and seen everywhere in major cities, such as Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Beijing.Undoubtedly, this phenomenon has already aroused public concern.

A multitude factors, both individual and social, could shoulder the responsibility of the celebration of western festivals. To start with, owing to the quickening pace of culture and economy exchanges between our motherland and other countries, people in ever increasingly numbers begin to accept, respect and then appreciate western culture, traditions and even religions. As a result, western festivals have attracted a growing number of Chinese people, in particular the youth. What also plays an indispensable role maybe is extremely complicated. Although relentless and ruthless competition poses tremendous pressure on us Chinese people, but most people, being reluctant to be workaholics, intend to seek more chances and opportunities of relaxation and recreation. Under such circumstances, the celebration of western festivals will definitely be on the rise.

From my perspective, perhaps the celebration of western festivals will gradually and eventually bridge the gap between Chinese and various cultures. All in all, I cherish a belief that we Chinese, as long as resisting the undesirable effects, are able to benefit from this fantastic trend.
