Unit 1

We are going to ascend the great wall tomorrow morning. So I’d like to go to bed early and have a good sleep this evening. You know climbing the great wall is not an easy job.

Jack: Great. The Great Wall is very famous and becomes a must for tourist in Beijing.

Would you tell me something about it?

OK. The construction of the great wall took altogether over 2000years.it started in the Zhou dynasty in the 7th century. B.C. And continued until Ming Dynasty in the 15th century A.D. The existing wall was built in the Ming Dynasty.

Jack: The Great Wall is indeed the crystallization of the industry and wisdom of the Chinese people and also a symbol of ancient Chinese culture. Then why the ancient people built the wall?

It was constructed to guard against the invasion by nomadic tribes from the north.

When enemy troops approached, guards on watch would send smoke signals from the beacon-fire towers as an alarm.

Jack: How did they manage to do so? Can you be more specific?

Those towers on the wall are spaced at equal distances from each other. When guards in a tower saw the signals from its neighbor, they immediately did the same thing .In this way; the signals would be relayed to the capital.

Jack: what the smart idea the ancient people had! I was told that in china. People usually call the Great Wall “Ten Thousand Li Long Wall”. Does it really mean that long?

Yes, exactly. It runs all the way across the eastern half of china with a length of about 6 000 kilometers.

Jack: 6 000 kilometers! It is unbelievable.

The Great Wall is said to be the only building on the earth that can be seen from the outer space.

Jack: I believe so. I once learned that The Great Wall in china has been ranked one of the Eight Great Wonders in the world.

Li Ying: Oh, it seems to me that you already know a lot about the Great Wall.

Jack: To tell you the truth, I am interested in Chinese culture and specialize in the study of the history of China. I even know the story of “Mengjiangnu Weeping on the Great Wall”.

Li Ying: Really? That’s a tragic story. It took place in the reign of Emperor Qinshihuang, the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty.

Jack: Yes. Mengjiangnu was a very good wife. One winter, she came to the Great Wall with warm clothes for her husband, but her husband had already died. She was heartbroken and wept so bitterly that the Great Wall collapsed.

Li Ying: Perfectly right. When Mengjinagnu saw her husband’s body lying under the wall, she became so grief-stricken that she threw herself into the sea. What a faithful wife!

Jack: Yes. Now my suggestion is that you should have a good rest tonight. Otherwise, you won’t be a great man tomorrow.

Li Ying: Oh, yes. “If we fail to reach the Great Wall, we are not men.”See you then. Jack: I just can’t wait to be there. Good night.

Dialogue Two:

Journalist: Thank you for accepting our interview. Spain is a leading tourism country in Europe. It once held the World EXPO in Seville in 1992. Its rich experience in tourism operation and management is a valuable asset to China, especially to Shanghai, since it will be the host of the World EXPO in 2010.

NATALLA: I am very honored to. And it gives me pleasure to share what we have learned from the experience of hosting the world EXPO.

Journalist: It is reported that the tourism revenue has reached 12﹪of GDP in Spain. What is included in this revenue?

NATALLA: According to the traditional definition, tourism revenue simply refers to revenues from tourism services, such as hotels, travel agencies, and catering.

Journalist: How about now? Is there any change in this definition?

NATALLA: Now it also includes revenues from transportation, tourists’consumption, and joint investments for direct tourism business, such as exhibitions.

Journalist: In what ways do you think will the EXPO promote the development of its host city?

NATALLA: EXPO 2010 will see a lot of people coming to Shanghai. This is an opportunity where the city can show the world its rapid development and its image of an international metropolis.

Journalist: What suggestions do you have for Shanghai to be a better host of the EXPO?

NATALLA: I suggest that Shanghai should not build too many new hotels or restaurants.

Instead, it had better improve and renovate the existing facilities.

Journalist: As we know, many cities have found that they face a financial loss after holding EXPO. Is that true

NATALLA: Yes. We have never heard a single city claim that it can make profits on holding EXPO. In fact, it might be very lucky if it can break even with government subsidies. EXPO Seville was held more than ten years ago, and ended with a loss of nearly $300 million.

Journalist: How did Seville make up for their losses?

NATALLA: Considering the increased awareness of Seville, once a small city hardly known to the outside world, it cannot be counted as a real loss.

Journalist: Compared with other tourist cities, for example, Tokyo and Singapore, do you think cities in China have any advantages in developing its tourism industry?

NATALLA: China is one of the four ancient civilizations and its mysterious oriental culture appeals to many foreign tourists. Moreover, its stable economic growth and increasingly improved social facilities has brought travelers much convenience.

Journalist: What advantages do you see in the city of Shanghai in developing tourism industry?

NATALLA: Shanghai is now the center for business development and cultural waves, and is also known for its good public security, which is definitely a key factor for a destination of long-distance travel.

Journalist: Thank you for your participation. It is very nice talking to you.

NATALLA: You are welcome.

Unit 2

Zhao: Welcome to Pazhou Exhibition Center of Canton Fair. Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Zhao Ying, Deputy Director of Overseas Department of Chinese Export Commodities Fair.

Guest: Thank you, Ms. Zhao. The members of my delegation are all from the exhibition industry of Cologne, Germany. It’s a great pleasure for us to have the opportunity to visit the exhibition center today.

Zhao: It’s a great pleasure for us to receive German friends in Pazhou. I’d like to extend our warmest welcome to all the members of the delegation on behalf of the staff members of the Canton Fair.

Guest: Thank you very much. Chinese people are famous throughout the world for their friendliness and hospitality. We have been overwhelmed by your arrangements. I believe this will be a very memorable visit.

Zhao: I’ll give you short briefing on the Pazhou Exhibition Center then will take you around. After that, there will be a 15-minute video show on the recent development of trade and economics of Guangdong province. Is the plan all right with you?

Guest: That sounds perfect with me! I can’t wait to explore a bit more in this magnificent building, thank you!

Zhao: The total land area of Pazhou Complex is 700 000㎡. For the first phase of the project, a total of 430 000㎡of land is used. The total construction area is 395 000㎡. 16 exhibition halls are built, among which the land area of indoor exhibition halls is 160 000 ㎡, and that of outdoor exhibition sites is 22 000㎡. It is by now the largest exhibition centre is Asia.

Guest: You just mentioned the first phase of the project. Does it mean you are still expanding the complex? Have you already launched the second phase construction?

Zhao: Yes, we’re. And we have launched the second phase construction. The third-phase construction is to be launched at the end of this year.

Zhao: Yes, we’re. And we have launched the second phase construction. The third-phase construction is to be launched at the end of this year.

Guest: That’s very impressive! This is one of the best venues I’ve ever seen. I think it has already reached the European standard. It is another example of China’s economic growth and your strong determination to catch up the rest of the world.

Zhao: Thanks! We are all very proud of the Pazhou Complex. The complex has very good exhibition halls. The exhibition hall of the ground floor is 13 meters high and that of the second floor is 8.89 to 9 meters high. It can provide a supreme high space for all kinds of exhibitions. In the five huge halls on the second floor, there are no poles, even when each hall covers about 10 000㎡. There are only several poles in the eight halls—on the ground floor, which is convenient for disposing the exhibition.

Guest: This structure indeed facilitates the setting up and dismantling of the stand.

However, can this structure sustain that weight?

Zhao: Yes, it surely can. The weight for each square meter to bear is five tons and 1.5 tons for the ground floor and the second floor. Besides, there are opening entrances and exits in both of the south and north sides, therefore the exhibition halls can be united for exhibition as well as separated.

Guest: I have been to the Canton Fair several times. I remember you used to hold the Fair in a different exhibition complex. Is the old venue of Canton Fair still in use?

Zhao: The old venue is still in use. However, the focus has been shifting to Pazhou Complex. It has become the major venue of Canton Fair. But we are going to use both of the two venues in both of the two sessions of Canton Fair this year.

Guest: Can you give us some details on the Liuhua Complex as it has been the core of the Canton Fair for more than four decades. It has already become a very famous venue all over the world.

Zhao: Sure, I will find a brochure of Liuhua Complex for you where you can get a lot of information. So much for the brief introduction to the Pazhou Complex, do you have any questions?

Guest: Not at this moment.

Zhao: I’d like to show you around the venue. And I’m willing to answer any questions you may ask while we are touring the fair.

Guest: Thank you very much.

Exhibitor: I’m sorry that we haven’t brought this item to the exhibition. However, you can visit our factory sometime. Then you can have a better understanding of our products.

Our Dongguan factory is very close to Guangzhou, which only takes 40 minutes’drive from here.

Dialogue 2

A meeting between Quebec provincial and Trade Delegation headed by Mr. Johnson and

Mr. Zhang, a senior official from the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong Province

Zhang: Today, the Quebec Provincial Economic and Trade Delegation arrived at Guangdong. I feel much delegated. Please allow me, on behalf of the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong province, to extend our warm welcome to our distinguish guests.

Johnson: Thank you for your warm welcome. This is my second visit to Guangdong , and my fellow delegates and I are amazed to find that so many changes have taken place here in the last 3 years.

Zhang: yes, Guangdong is the pioneer of china’s reform and opening-up, as well as the most dynamic region in terms of economic development. The total GDP of Guangdong accounts for

one ninth of that of Chinese Mainland; total import and export trade volume accounts for one third of the national total; total foreign investment attracted takes up quarter of that of the Mainland,

Johnson: That’s so impressive. No wonder Guangdong is a magnet for foreign direct investment.

Zhang: right. And equally impressive is the investment in Guangdong from Canadian businesses. From 1979 to 2005, a total of 675 direct investment projects in Guangdong came from Canada, with actual investment amounting to us$676million.

Johnson: I am proud that Canada has played an active role in this aspect. This is a two-way process as well, with more and more enterprises from Guangdong investing and setting up businesses in Canada.

Zhang :that’s true. Up to August 2005, Guangdong has established 9 enterprises and representative offices in Canada, with a total of US&1.92 million. Compared to our Canadian counterparts, these figures are quite insignificant, but I believe we will surely have more and more two-way investment in the future,

Johnson: I have no doubt about that. We’ve already seen number of well-performing enterprises from Guangdong establish their production and sales network in Canada, and I believe our economic cooperation has huge potential.

Zhang :In October this year, our province is to hold the “Hong Kong-Guangdong-Canadian business forum 2005”in Vancouver, Canada. I hereby invite all of you to take part in this grand event.

Johnson: I will pay close attention to this event, and hopefully we can see each other at the time.

Johnson:

Zhang : it’s a deal then. I wish you have a pleasant stay in Guangzhou. Should you encounter any difficulty, please do not hesitate to inform us. we will try our best to help you out. Johnson: that’s very kind of you. I believe this visit will be a most smooth and memorable one.

Unit 4

?Dialogue One

?An interview between a journalist and HSBC Group Chairman John Bond.

Journalist: What is your primary job as the Chairman of HSBC? What is the special role that you play in this enterprise?

?Bond: I think we have a team that has managed the business very successfully. ?Bond:

?So my job is to think what will the world look like in 25 years’ time. How do we position HSBC to be well-positioned for the future? My job is to get the company ready for that.

And I also believe that every business should have a main board director responsible for corporate security, and that’s me. So that we don’t get complacent,

?Because the world’s changing very fast, our competitors are changing. I think complacency and a sense of we’ve always been number one is the biggest risk that any corporation faces.

?Journalist: In the west, many people perceive the global economy changing in very America-centric or Europe-centric terms.

?As you described just now, the rebalancing of global economy should be carried out towards Asia. Do you see any fundamental impact exerted by the global economy on different cultures around the world?

?Bond: I think each country will develop its economy in the way that suits particular history, its particular culture, and its own people.

?We don’t see a homogeneous culture of the world. I think you have to adapt, and you

should adapt to the local practices wherever you are.

?I’ve worked in six different countries a t HSBC. The underlying values have been the same, but the way we’ve gone about business has been totally different.

?Journalist: As HSBC has employees from many different cultures around the world working in some fundamentally different businesses, could you briefly talk about the challenges you face in managing the human resources of an organization with such diversity?

?Bond: It’s a fantastic question because all business is about people. What we try to do is to make sure the fixed core values that we have are understood universally. But after that, we believe in the diversity of cultures. For example, we have interesting systems in the Middle East. I’ve come back from a trip to the Middle East.

?Our colleagues there are different, they work different days, they have different food and they have time for prayer. I think the whole basis you have to have is respect for other peoples’ cultures and other peoples’ points of views, as long as it doesn’t infringe on what we think the essential characteristics of running a successful financial services company are, such as integrity and teamwork.

?Journalist: What would you say is the secret of your success?

?Bond: Luck, if you want a n honest answer. If I hadn’t been born in 1941, I’d have been too old to be chairman or too young to be chairman. I’ve had difficult times in my career.

?So I would have to say truthfully that luck or serendipity, call it what you will, is the secret.

?Journalist: Let me put it in another way. Do you believe that some of your characteristics also contribute to you success? Do you believe that successful people have at least some characteristics in common?

?Bond: I think most of the people who will get on an organization like HSBC have a high energy level, a lot curiosity. I never stopped asking questions, to the irritation of many of mu senior people. I think they have emotional intelligence. In today’s world you need emotional intelligence to be successful.

?So curiosity, high energy, emotional intelligence would be some of the characteristics that

I think you’ll find in most people who get to the top. I think that’s what my view would

be, but different companies would have different views, I’m sure.

?Journalist: For students who will soon graduate from university, what advice do you have for them in terms of their career decision-making? What sort of things should they be thinking upon graduation?

不过如果你选择加入公司,?Bond: I think if I were starting over, I’d try to do something on my own. I don’t think I can stand here and say that I’d go for a bi g corporate life. I think if I had the talent to be an entrepreneur, that’s what I’d have to go at. But if you’re going to join a company,

?then you need to pay huge attention to joining a quality company that really does do what it says it does. They all have mission statements saying we put our clients first, and you can see them littered all over corporate worlds.

?But find one that really does, and work for a quality organization. I think that will never comprise your values or comprise what you believe in or ask you to do anything that you feel uncomfortable with. And have fun, choose something that’s going to be fun ?Dialogue Two

? A TV interview between a Chinese news anchor and Howard Schultz, chairman of Starbucks.

?Anchor: If you love office, you can’t be strange to Starbucks, a leading global coffee retailer that originates from Seattle, the United States , with some 9000 coffee houses around the globe.

?It came to China in 2000, and now its stores can be found in corners of many Chinese cities. Today we have Howard Schultz, the Chairman of Starbuck with us as he is on the trip to China. Nice to have you here Mr. Schultz.

?Howard Schultz:

?Howard Schultz:Nice to meet you and I’m glad to be here.

?Anchor: I was very impressed when I heard about your ambitious expansion plans: you are opening up to 1800 new stores next year, 1300 in the United States and 500 abroad.

Are they too many? Is the speed too fast?

?Howard Schultz: Well, not at all. I mean, if you go back to the history of the company, you will see that we have been a growth company for the last 20 years and the hallmark of that growth has been our ability to invest ahead of the growth curve. That’s exactly what we’ve been doing. We’re opening 5 new stores a day.

?We are serving 40 million customers a week, and our international business had a 79% increase in operating income last year. We are in a position right now to really capitalize on the investments we’ve made over the last couple of years.

?We are very optimistic about the balance of the year, and specifically what is going on internationally and in China.

?Anchor: Are you satisfied with Starbucks’ development in China? What are the differences between your stores in China and their counterparts in the United States? ?

?Howard Schultz:We view China as the fastest growing market for our product outside the United States. We already have 140 Chinese stores designed much like their American counterparts. About 80%of the Chinese customers have our coffee in the store and stay very long enjoying the environment.

?The store that th at we’ve opened here are large in size, so Starbucks has become the third place between home and work, an extension of people’s lives.

?Anchor: Chinese citizens have much lower levels of income and consumption than American people.

?Even in big cities, the average wage is no higher than $100 a week. How do you get people that are making $100 a week to spend $5 on a cup of coffee?

?Howard Schultz:

?Howard Schultz:Well, the customers who are coming to Starbucks are making more than that. But let me put it in perspective for you that I think is interesting.

?I am told that over 300 million Chinese people are using a cell phone every day. And when you think about the fact that they have leapfrogged traditional technology, and many of those people never had access to a telephone at home. It demonstrates the adoption that they have to new technology and Western type opportunities.

?There are a large, large group of people with disposable income and purchasing power much greater than the average level.

?Anchor: Starbucks is a company that prides itself on the image of being environmentally friendly. Do you find your values and guiding principles being understood here in China? ?

?Howard Schultz:

?Howard Schultz:I think that is a very important and right question. What I saw during the meeting I had with government officials was a very strong level of openness and understanding that a business like Starbucks which has built itself on its balance between profitability and benevolence is the kind of business they would like to see succeed in China.

?What I mean by that specifically is that the Chinese government is very interest, I think, in opening up the doors to Western companies and Western brands, especially those companies that are very respectful of the heritage and tradition of how this country was built. We’ve demonstrated a willingness to understand your way of thinking and your way of life.

?What we would be most proud of is t he foundation that we’ve built in here is very, very strong because the values and guiding principles of our company are the same as they are in America.

?Anchor: all right. This will conclude our interview today. Thank you very much, Mr.

Schultz.

?Howard Schultz:

Dialogue One

Master of ceremony: The banquet is ready, shall we go into the dinning hall and sit at table? You will find your name card on the table in front of you. (Hosts and guests take their seats)

Governor Huang: Governor Smith, Mrs. Smith, welcome to Guangzhou. Your province and Guangzhou has always enjoyed a close relationship. Last year, we became Sister Provinces. Here I propose, let’s drink to the friendship between our two provinces!

Governor Smith: Governor Huang, thank you very much for inviting us to this beautiful dinner, I feel much honored. This is my second visit to Guangdong and I feel that we are old friends already. I want to propose a toast to our host! Thank you for your hospitality. Let’s drink to the great province——Guangdong! Cheers!

Governor Huang: Since the establishment of the relationship of sister provinces, people of the two provinces have enjoyed friendly relations and the bilateral trade has increased greatly. I believe your visit this time will further promote our friendship. Wish you a very pleasant visit. Governor Smith: Thank you! It’s a very precious trip to me. I am very impressed with the rapid growth of Guangdong since my last visit here. I visited the New Baiyun International Airport and the Metro Station yesterday, which are among the best in the world. It’s very amazing.

Governor Huang: Thank you for your compliments. Guangdong Province is one of the first provinces that realized modernization, yet we still have a long way to go. We want to learn the precious experience from you and you delegation.

Governor Smith: Our delegation has also learned a lot in our visit this time. (courses being served)

Director of FAO: Cantonese food will be the main hit of the banquet today. There are marked differences in climate, geography and customs in the different regions of China, and food is no exception. Cantonese food is the most famous school of cuisine in southern China. I hope you will enjoy it.

Governor Smith: I’m sure I’ll like it. Not only in China, Cantonese food is also very popular back in my country. You can see Chinese restaurants everywhere, most of them are of Cantonese Food. And I like it very much personally.

Director of FAO: Thank you for you compliment. Let me introduce to you this colorless transparent liquor——Maotai. It is named after the place where it is made. It is a must at state banquet or formal banquet.

Governor Smith: Though our two countries have different rituals and taste in alcohols, we both have rich culture of wine. And the eating utensils you’ve got are very unique too, for example, Kuaizi.

Director of FAO: Then, let me show you how to use chopsticks. First, you hold them slightly apart between your thumb and forefinger, press against the inside of you middle finger as if you were holding a pencil. When you pick up food, you press your forefinger against the

lower part of chopsticks and they will move like a pincer.

Governor Smith: It’s amazing, just like playing with some kind of instrument. And the dishes are wonderful. Thank you again for your hospitality.

Director of FAO: China has a rich culture of food and cuisine. I hope you can visit China and visit Guangdong more.

Governor Smith: Thank you. I do believe we will have more chances of mutual visits as our two provinces are having closer relationships.

Dialogue 2

David Johnson

Liang: Welcome! (Shake hands.) Mr. Johnson, please allow, on behalf of our Governor and the provincial government to extend our warmest welcome to you and all the delegates of the trade mission. How’s your journey?

Johnson: Oh, fine. It’s a long journey indeed, however the flight was smooth and the service on the plane was first rate.

Liang: Mr. Johnson, is it your first time to China? Have you ever heard of Guangdong before? Johnson: Well, I was here in Guangzhou once, also during the Canton Fair. But it was more than 20 years ago, not long since you had started reform and opening-up. I can see that Guangzhou has undergone tremendous changes during the past twenty years.

Liang: Yes, indeed. Since China’s reform and opening up, Guangdong has achieved great economic and social development. Take the hotel industry as an example. In the 1980s, Guangzhou has established three five-star hotels:White Swan Hotel, China Hotel and Garden Hotel, each with more than 800 rooms. They are the first five-star hotels in Guangzhou.

Since then, many guesthouses and hotel rooms of different classes and scales were established. Now, there are more than 900 hotels available in Guangzhou to foreign guests. However, all the hotels are nearly fully booked during the two session of the Canton Fair.

Johnson: I had been to the Canton Fair during my last visit. And this time, I came here with a delegation of more than 100 American businessmen, all looking for high-quality products with very competitive prices. How’s the development of the Canton Fair in the past two decades?

Liang: Like previous years, the Canton Fair is held twice every year. As it was started in 1957, we welcome its 100th session this autumn. Since reform and opening up, China witnessed very rapid economic growth. Many provinces and cities hold its regional trade fair, which give more opportunity to international businessman to carry out business activities in various parts of China.

However, as Canton Fair is a national trade fair, many foreign business people regard it as more effective. Therefore, thousands of foreign buyers attend the Canton Fair every year which lead to ever-increasing transaction value.

Johnson: It was a tremendous success, Mr. Liang. I think it showcases the positive effects brought by China’s reform and opening up policy. China has now become a more dynamic and open economy which plays an irreplaceable role in the world. My delegation and I myself can’t wait to join the 100th session of the Canton Fair.

Liang: I believe the 100th session of Canton Fair will leave you and your delegation with a very deep impression. The number of exhibitors and professional buyers strikes a historical high in this session, which further strengthens its position as the “No. 1 Trade Fair” in China. To celebrate the special occasion, we have prepared a series of special events. I believe the 100th session will be more exciting than the previous ones and I sincerely invite you to the series of ceremonial events.

Johnson: Thank you. I feel very honored that I’ve been invited to some of the ceremonial events. The American delegation will hold a matchmaking event to celebrate this special occasion, by which we can better facilitate the trade activities between our two countries.

Liang: This is a very meaningful event and I wish it a full success. And I hope you can come to China more in the future.

Johnson: Thank you very much.

Unit 6

?wang: Hello Mr. Camepell! It's a great pleasure to meet you. Welcome to Beijing People's Art Theatre! I am Wang Ting from the External Relations Department of the Theatre. I will be your guide today and will introduce to you something about our Theatre. ?Campbell: Thank you very much Miss Wang! It's very nice of you to help with my visit.

Back in my country, I'm the Art Director of a theatre company based in Birmingham in Central England. I have heard a lot about Beijing People's Art Theatre in my drama career.

I know it is a world-class troupe with fine tradions and excellent expertise. Now that I'm

here, I really long to learn more about it.

?Wang: Thank you for your gracious words! It is true that Beijing People’s Art Theatre enjoys a long tradition. It is a national theatre company with unique performing style. The Theatre was established on June 12, 1952. The first Director was the play master Cao Yu.

Ever since its establishment, the Theatre has put on nearly 300 domestic as well as foreign plays in different forms, with different styles and produced different times. ?Campbell: That sounds to me to be an incomparable achievement. I believe the western style drama was not part of Chinese performing art tradition. You see, some famous troupes in Europe have a history which dates back to 200 years ago. You have only been around for half a century, yet what you have managed to do is so impressive.

?Wang: There are many forms of oral performance in traditional Chinese performing art, such as Chinese operas, comic dialogue and popular tales, which all emphasize precise stage performing techniques. But it was not until 1907 that the first that the first western play was put on Chinese stage. In nearly 100 years afterwards, the Chinese theatre professionals have devoted themselves to this career. Their dedication led to the emergence of a number of masterpieces, which have been welcomed both at home and aboard. It can be said that the development of Beijing People’s Art Theatre has been a miniature of the development of Chinese modern theatre.

?Campbell: I absolutely agree with you. China's economy is now developing rapidly. I assume that the cultural sector also has achieved significant growth. The same must be true for your Theatre as well.

?Wang:Yes. Since China’s reform and opening-up, Beijing People’s Art Theatre has made significant development. The theatre company now has three theatres mainly for drama performances—the Capital Theatre, the Mini Theatre, and the Experimental Theatre. The theatre’s stage art center has a professional producing base, which could make setting, costumes and props for the theatre itself and other performing troupes. We also have a 700—square—meter museum built in the Capital Theatre.

?Campbell: Have you ever performed or cooperated with any troupes in the UK?

2.2 Why do we have eyebrows? Those tiny, little hairs above our eyes that many women either pluck, paint, pierce or tattoo play a very important role in keeping moisture out of our eyes. Just like an umbrella keeps our bodies dry from the rain, our hairy eyebrows keep our eyes dry from rain or sweat. When it's pouring rain outside or when sweat drips down from our foreheads, our eyebrows divert the flow of water or sweat away from our eyes. Our arch-shaped eyebrows angle the rain or sweat around to the side of our faces--leaving our eyes fairly dry. By catching the water or sweat, our eyebrows not only allow us to see more clearly, but also keep salty sweat from burning or irritating our eyes. Eyebrows have other roles also. As one of our most expressive facial features, eyebrows help us determine how people are feeling without ever really asking them. If a person's eyebrows are frowning, chances are they are mad or upset. In addition, eyebrows have an increasing impact on our beauty or fashion culture over the years. Thick, hairy and big eyebrows tend to be characterized as unattractive while thin and plucked eyebrows are said to be more attractive. 3.1Hotels in China Hotels in China are classified into first class, second class and third class based on their star-rating. Five-star and most four-star hotels are in the first class. Guest rooms in first class hotels all have fully-fitted bathrooms, refrigerators, telephones and satellite TV. They have fully adjustable climate control through central air-conditioning facilities. Other ancillary facilities provided by these hotels include such things as business centres, conference facilities, beauty parlours, saunas, foreign exchange, bowling centers, disco-ballrooms, swimming pools, gymnasiums, restaurants, cafes, shopping centers and bars which are open 24 hours a day. The second class generally includes three-star hotels and some two-star ones. Guest room facilities and services are not up to the standard of those in first class hotels. Tour groups normally prefer to stay in second class hotels. Third class hotels are much like motels in Western counties in terms of facilities and services. Hardware facilities in such hotels are of course inferior to those provided by second class hotels, but they offer prices 50% or more below those of second class hotels. As a result, they are popular with many tourists. 5.1 What makes a good conversation? Recently, a friend phoned me. She’s one of those people who could talk under wet cement. I've discovered that I can even put the phone down and attend to something in another room while she's talking and she doesn’t even notice. A second friend phoned me that night. I was very tired, but I soon forgot my weariness as we animatedly shared our opinions, beliefs and personal experiences. Time flew, and as I went to bed very late that night, I thought, “Now, that was a really good conversation!” It occurred to me that it might be an interesting topic to research for my speech tonight. So I asked some of my friends what they thought made a good conversation. They had different suggestions, but all agreed on three main points: mutual interest, give and take, trust. Let's look at the first one: mutual interest. A conversation has to be of interest to all concerned. As one friend suggested, a good conversation is when two or more people voluntarily explore the topic. But how can we be sure that we are not boring others? We need to be sensitive to the cues
