Lesson 1

Part I Task 3

Mike: I saw Jason today.

Susan: How’s he doing?

Mike: Not too well, I’m afraid.

Susan: Why’s that?

Mike: He told me he had been looking for work, but hadn’t found a job.

Susan: That surprises me. He had a very good internship. I had thought he would stay after graduation.

Mike: Yes, the boss had treated him well, but the pay was not so high. He also said he didn’t like his chance of advancing in the company.

Susan: Quitting doesn’t sound like a very wise decision to me. You know these days it’s not so easy for a graduate to find a job.

Mike: That’s true. But he’s been working hard at finding a new job.

Susan: What’s he done?

Mike: He said he had sent out his resumes to more than twenty companies.

Unfortunately, he told me that only two had called him for an interview. Susan: That’s tough.

Mike: I gave him some advice and I hope it helps.

Susan: What did you suggest?

Mike: I suggested joining a networking group.

Susan: That’s a great idea.

Mike: Yes, well, he told me he would try a few groups.

Susan: Where did you see him?

Mike: I saw him at the mall. He told me he was shopping for a new suit.

Susan: What?! Buying new clothes and no work!

Mike: No, no. He said he wanted to make the best impression possible at his job interviews.

Susan: Oh, that makes sense.

Part II

Wendy: Hey, this is your order.

Customer: Are you new here? I come to this coffeehouse often. But I didn’t see you here before.

Wendy: Yes. My friend introduced me to work here three days ago. And I came to work from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. every other day. I’m still a student now. Customer: Do you mind if I ask you why you’ve taken this part-time job? Wendy: Of course not. You know, there are many foreign customers like you here.

And I think it’s good for me to improve my oral English. Besides, I can support myself.

Customer: Oh, are you an English student? Or you just study English for interest’s sake?

Wendy: No, I’m not an English student. I major in International Business. I wish some day I can work in an international corporation, so English would be very useful.

Customer: Very nice. Thank you for your time.

(He hands Wendy some tips.)

Wendy: Thank you, sir. But I’m not allowed to accept any tips.

Customer: OK then. I don’t want to put you in trouble.

Wendy: Well, would you like something else? The new-made cafe-parfait is really good. Want some?

Customer: OK. And I’d like some cookies.

Wendy: Sure. If you want more coffee, please go over there. There is self-help coffee maker.

Customer: I surely know that. Don’t forget that I am a regular customer here. Wendy: Oops. Well, wait for a while. We’ll get it done quickly.

Customer: It’s OK. Thank you.

Lesson 2

Part I Task 2

Man: I can see by your resume here that you studied Business Administration. Woman: That’s right.

Man: So I wonder why you want to work for a newspaper.

Woman: I did reporting for the university newspaper at my school. And I’ve always been very interested in journalism.

Man: But journalism—it’s a very different profession from administration. You know

a lot about administration. Why don’t you choose to work for a company looking to train managers?

Woman: I studied administration, yes, but I am more attracted to writing articles. I want to use my knowledge of business to write financial news.

Man: A news reporter must expect to work many hours.

Woman: I know that the profession requires dedication.

Man: You should expect to work more than fifty hours a week. And there is a lot of pressure in this job. You have to get stories in by the deadline. You have to be

very independent. You have to know how to arrange things by yourself. Woman: I know that new reporters work many hours. I am very willing to take on the challenge.

Man: Judging by the stories you gave us, I’d say your writing is very good. Have you written things other than newspaper stories?

Woman: I have experience writing newsletters for a health club. I mentioned that in my resume.

Man: You did that while you were in school?

Woman: Yes.

Man: Oh, yes, I see it. Well, I think our interview is complete then. Are there any questions you would like to ask me?

Woman: No, not at the moment.

Man: Alright, then. We will probably be giving you a call in ten days or so. I have to interview several more people.

Woman: Thank you, Mr. Jones.

Part III

Susan:Hello. This is Susan William calling. Could I speak to Doug Smith?

Doug:Speaking.

Susan:Can I talk with you for a moment, Doug?

Doug:What can I do for you, Susan?

Susan:I’m concerned about the delays we’re experiencing with some of our suppliers. Doug:We’re doing everything to get back on schedule.

Susan:Could you give me an approximate timeline?

Doug:A number of deliveries are arriving tomorrow. Unfortunately, this time of year isoften troublesome.

Susan:That’s not good. We can’t make excuses to our clients. Are all shipments affected?

Doug:No, but it is summer and some companies are cutting back until September. Susan:Where are most of our suppliers located?

Doug:Well, most of them are in China, but there are a few in California.

Susan:How does that affect deliveries?

Doug:Well, there are weather delays and shipment delays due to reduced production.Sometimes, larger packages are delayed because of a bottleneck at the distributionpoint.

Susan:Is there any way around these delays?

Doug:Well, we often work with delivery services such as Fed Express and DHL for ourmost urgent shipping. They guarantee door-to-door deliveries within 48 hours. Susan:That is cool.

Doug:And we are bound to advise you of the safe arrival of the cargos.

Susan:Great, thanks. You are so thoughtful. So glad to do business with you.Goodbye. Doug:Bye-bye.

Lesson 6

Part I Task 3

John: Hello, this is John speaking.

Mary: Hello, John. Mary is here.

John: Hi, Mary. I was hoping to speak to Susie.

Mary: Sorry, Susie’s away on business. Can I help?

John: Yes, Mary, I think you probably can. I’m afraid I’ve got some rather bad news.

It’s the trip over the International Furniture Expo.

Mary: Uh-huh?

John: Yes, I’m afraid we’ve had a bit of an internal reorganization here and we’ll be sending a much smaller team.

Mary: Well, does this mean you won’t be needing the same-sized booth, then? John: I’m afraid so. There’ll just be Diane and myself. We won’t be able to handle such a large stand.

Mary: So, you’d like me to look into that, would you?

John: I would be very grateful.

Mary: OK, well, I suppose this will also have implications for the reception on Saturday night?

John: Yes, I’m afraid so. I would hope that we could still go ahead with it but it’ll have to be on a reduced budget.

Mary: Well, we were planning for eighty people. Could you give me an idea of what you have in mind now?

John: Umm…could we say fifty, and perhaps you could get us a revised estimate? You know, the cost of a smaller stand at the exhibition, just the two hotel rooms, and a lower key reception.

Mary: I’ll see what I can do. Of course, I’ll have to talk to Susie first.

John: Oh yes, I understand. But could you fax us through a revised budget—say by the end of the week?

Mary: Yes, that should be OK. I’ll phone Susie if there’s any problem.

John: That would be best. Goodbye.

Mary: Bye-bye.

Part II

David: Hello, this is David from the Oriental Co. Ltd.

Helen: Hi, David. This is Helen. Nice to hear from you. How’s the Australian weather? David: Terrific. What’s it like in London?

Helen: Not good, I’m afraid.

David: What a pity. I’m planning to come across next week.

Helen: Really? Well, you’ll come by to see us while you’re here, I hope.

David: That’s what I’m phoning about. I’ve got a meeting with a customer in London on Tuesday next week. I was hoping we could arrange to meet you either before

or after that.

Helen: Great. That would give us a chance to show you the convention center, and we could also drop in at Caesar’s Restaurant where Elizabeth has arranged your reception.

David: That’s what I was thinking.

Helen: So you said you have to be in London on Tuesday? That’s the 8th?

David: That’s right. Now, I could stop over in Dover either on the way in—that would be the Monday. Would that be possible?

Helen: Ah, I’m afraid I won’t be in the office on Monday, and I think Elizabeth has meetings all day.

David: Uh-huh, well, the other possibility would be to arrange it on my way home. Helen: When do you plan on leaving Boston?

David: Could be either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, but I would like to catch a flight back to Australian on Wednesday evening.

Helen: OK. Well, it would be best for us if you could fly in on the Wednesday

morning. Either Elizabeth or I will pick you up at the airport, and then we could show you the convention center and also Caesar’s. If there’s time, you could

come back to the office and we’ll run through any of the details that still haven’t been finalized.

David: That sounds good, just as long as I can get back to the airport for my evening flight.

Helen: No problem. Look, why don’t you fax me your information once you’ve confirmed your flight times? Then we’ll get back to you with an itinerary for the day—that’s Wednesday the 9th, right?

David: That’s right. Good, well, I’ll do that and I look forward to seeing you next week.

Helen: Same here. See you next week.

David: Right. Goodbye.

Helen: Bye-bye.

Lesson 7

Part III

Victor: Thank you for coming to the meeting today, Ms. Charlie.

Charlie: My pleasure, Mr. Victor. Now, what problems are we having around here? Victor: Well, unfortunately, we’re having a number of problems with our clients in New York.

Charlie: They usually pay on time. I don’t understand.

Victor: Yes, you’re right. They ARE excellent clients. Unfortunately, they aren’t pleased with the merchandise we are sending them.

Charlie: How can that be? We always provide first-class products.

Victor: I know, however they aren’t happy. They say they are meeting with a new manufacturer next week.

Charlie: Nonsense, and what are we doing to change things?

Victor: Well, that’s the reason for our meeting today. I’d like to make a few suggestions.

Charlie: I’m listening.

Victor: Why don’t we change suppliers?

Charlie: Is that the problem?

Victor: Let’s take a look at some of the suppliers in the area. I’m sure we can find a better one.

Charlie: OK, what other suggestions have you got?

Victor: Shall we invite them to meet with us?

Charlie: That’s an excellent idea. It’ll show them our concern.

Victor: OK, I’ll arrange a meeting. Thank you, Ms. Charlie.

Charlie: You’re welcome.

Lesson 8

Part I Task 3

A: Next please! Hello sir, may I see your passport please?

B: Yes, here you are.

A: Will you be checking any bags.

B: Yes, I’d like to check three pieces.

A: I’m sorry, sir. Airline policy allows only two pieces of checked luggage, at twenty kilograms each, plus one piece of carry-on luggage. I will have to charge you extra for the additional suitcase.

B: What? Why! I am taking an intercontinental flight! I’m flying sixteen thousand kms! How am I supposed to only take two, twenty-kilo bags? That’s absurd!

A: I am sorry, sir, there’s nothing I can do. You cannot board the flight with that large bag either. Carry-on bags must fit in the over-head compartment or under your seat. That bag is clearly too big.

B: Now I see. You charge next to nothing for an international ticket, but when it comes to charging for any other small thing, you charge an arm and a leg! So tell me, miss, how much I will have to pay for all of this?

A: Let’s see... six hundred and twenty-five US dollars.

B: That’s more than my round-trip ticket!

Lesson 9

(Mr. Thomas, president of Starlight Foreign Trade Company, invited some foreign guests to dinner. Li Lei was in charge of this business banquet. After he came to the restaurant, Li Lei was anxious about the disordered knives, forks and wineglasses on the table. How to lay the seats and set the table? At this moment, Wang Wei, the Manager of Western Food Department came. He set the table and laid the seats after inquiring detailed information of the guests. Wang Wei explained how to order, how to serve dishes, and how to choose wine, etc.)

Li Lei: Nice to meet you, Ms. Wang.

Wang Wei: Nice to meet you, Mr. Li. What can I do for you?

Li Lei: My boss, Mr. Thomas, has booked a dinner for some foreign guests this evening. I have seen the table, but the table’s arrangement doesn’t match the occidental manners; you know, we have a lot of important clients.

Wang Wei: OK, let me see. You are right, so I will explain you how to arrange the occidental dinner.

Li Lei: Thank you very much.

Wang Wei: Please tell me how many people from your side and foreign guests’ side. Li Lei: Mr. Thomas the president, Mr. Rink general director, Miss Chin the interpreter and me. And for another part, they are Mr. Green the president and Ms. Jolie vice president, etc.

Wang Wei: Well, normally we put the seats like that: Mr. Thomas sits in the middle and faces to the door; Mr. Rink faces to Mr. Thomas at the other side of the table; Mr. Green at the right hand, Ms. Jolie at the left hand. That is OK.

Li Lei: And how to eat with the knife and fork?

Wang Wei: The fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right one. When you have finished eating and want others to know, place your knife and folk together with the tines on the fork facing upwards on your plate.

Li Lei: Thank you very much!

Wang Wei: You are welcome!

13

Part II

(Wang Wei, general manager of Starlight Company, invited Steven and some other foreign guests to play golf. Li Lei, the employee of the company who had never played golf before, took in charge of the sports equipment preparation and other arrangements: booking the site, purchasing brassies, clothes and contacting caddy, Zhang Xiao. Everything was ready. But the weather forecast reported that the next day may be rainy. Li Lei was hopeless…)

Li Lei: Is that Mr. Wang speaking? This is Li Lei speaking. I just want to talk about the golf issue.

Wang Wei: Yes, how are you? Li Lei, tell me how things are going?

Li Lei: I have confirmed the reservation for the site. I called Zhang Xiao to be your caddy.

Wang Wei: Well, you did a good job.

Li Lei: Thank you, Mr. Wang, but I just heard that tomorrow may be a rainy day. It is a little pity!

Wang Wei: OK, don’t worry about the weather. If it rains, we can play the indoor golf. Li Lei: Really? So what should I do for indoor golf preparations?

Wang Wei: You just book the indoor golf for backup site. That will be OK!

Li Lei: I see. Mr. Wang. I will arrange it. Thank you.

Wang Wei: Thank you!

A maintenance has kept the Empire Stare Building in pristine condition. Experts say that as long as its is maintained, it could stand for centuries. Others buildings on the Manhattan skyline won’t be so lucky. But other buildings can’t claim to be enduring symbols of a place and a people. The Empire State Building was one of the last products of the Golden Age of skyscrapers. After World War II, the elegance of the Art Deco giants gave way to the boxy lines of modern height rises. Why did this happen Partly, it grew out of an argument amongst architects over the best ways to dress the frame of a building.

China’s Developments and Achievements No one can refuse to admit that there are many achievements of China in recent decades. I know some of them, such as economic reform, joining to the WTO, and successfully bidding to host the Olympic Games in 2008 and so on. They are significant and outstanding achievements. Chinese people benefit a lot from these great achievements. Firstly, people’s living standards have been improved significantly over the past 10 years. A huge number of families have a TV, a computer, a refrigerator and so on, and the most important thing is that most families have a bright and big house. Secondly, peop le’s daily life becomes more colorful and meaningful, recent years bring people a lot of recreational activities, such as computer video games, movies, and internet. Conversely, 10 years ago, we still had not these abundant and colorful campaigns. Of course, there are still a lot of things which should be done in the next 10 years. We should continue to support our economic development and investment, to protect the environment, to cut down the greenhouse gas emissions and to consolidate our military and defense systems. Topic2. An unforgettable graduation ceremony I’d like to say the graduation cerem ony of my senior high school. The only thing that I don’t forget is the speech of principal in my senior high school hall. During the ceremony, I clearly listened to his words with great spirits for all of us. His eyes were filled with hope, which seems like that he told us about how to overcome so many difficulties in the future. His words really attracted all the students and teachers. He told us that we shouldn’t give up at any time, because we must try our best to do everything we could. After the graduation ceremony, I promised to myself that I should continue to study harder in order to have enough experience and knowledge to be a better person who can make more contributions to the whole society.

有很多同学当听到老师问:“can you make a self-introduction?”

Question #1: Tell Me About Yourself This isn’t even actually a question, but it’s something you may be asked to do in an interview. Because it’s so general, you may not know where to begin. Why they're asking: Colleges are asking you to do this because they really do want to know more about you. That's one of the primary purposes of the interview. What they're looking for: Paint a unique portrait of who you are to separate yourself from the other applicants. You should attempt to avoid cliches or descriptions that would be too common. Don’t just say you’re hard-working. How to prepare: Rehearse answering this question. Talk about your passions, hobbies, and interests. You can discuss what inspires you or what your friends like about you. Be specific. Again, you want to make yourself memorable. Question #2: Why Are You Interested in This College? Why they're asking: This is an important question and one you

Newly compiled on November 23, 2020

考试中:当老师示意你开始的时候,你就开始讲自己的名字和口试证号码,my name is……..my registration number is……..
