46---50.BBCCA 51---55. ACDDA

56---60. BCDCB 61---65. DABAD

(中)

Humans are dominant species on planet Earth. Their numbers are increasing rapidly. They are no longer restricted by their environment, as they can live in the most hostile of deserts or the bitter cold of Antarctica.

Human culture is heavily based on the earth’s natural resources---oil, coal and metals; soil, water and forests. Industrialized society is using increasing amounts of these resources each year. Governments and industrialists strive for economic growth---for factories and mines to produce more each year than they did in the previous year. But fuels and metals and, to a lesser extent, the soil are nonrenewable resources. Once used they are gone for ever. In many cases the lifetime of these resources is coming to an end.

Factories and machines create wastes. These wastes are poured into the atmosphere, the water and even into the soil. The damaging effect of this pollution is, in some cases, permanent.

To reduce pollution creates further problems. Factories may have to be redesigned or even pulled down. This costs money and may even mean loss of livelihood for many workers.

Modern technology is creating an additional problem---it is making industry more and more automatic. This means that fewer and fewer people are needed to operate factories and offices. The consequent loss of jobs is a worldwide problem and western society is still struggling to find the answer.

This introduction gives you some idea of the topics to be discussed in detail in this chapter.

Questions 30 to 35 are based on the following passage: (中) We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself/ not very well probably, especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence in films, but recently some programs on TV showed how people can defend themselves without guns,. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the ground. How? She knew judo.

Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called , means “muscle science”in Japanese. The student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a number of “falls”, “holds”and “throws”. Someone who does not know judo cannot defend himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is stronger than you. ( You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall without hurting themselves!)being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is another. In judo, you see the other person’s body to help you. You “throw” him to the ground and “hold”him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice, but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to defend yourself.

31. The woman mentioned in the passage .

D. a scientific way of learning for students

33. If we practiced judo on our friends, they would probably ______.

A. be hurt

B. attack back bravely

C. hold onto the ground

34. We may infer from the context that a skillful judo fighter knows how to ______.

A. use the other people’s body to increase his chance of success

B. prevent the other person from being hurt

C. avoid fighting with someone who doesn’t know judo

D. learn the muscle science well

35. We may come to the following conclusions EXCEPT that______.

A. judo may also be called jiu-jitsu in Japanese

B. judo can be learnt by both men and women

C. no one can master the art of judo overnight

D. only a strong person can use his body wisely.

Questions36 to 40 are based on the following passage: (艺术类~~中) Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is “Don’t!”. But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years,. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Them she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon.

36. From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession_______.

A. sought after by too many

B. too difficult for young people

C. for ambitious people only

D. for young people only

37. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as part of an assistant stage manager’s job?

A. Play minor roles

B. Take care of the dress to be worn on the stage by an actor or actress

C. Help advertise plays

38. For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that ______.

A. he will become a film star at long last

B. he will become a stage manager

C. he will be well paid

D. he will end up without any success

39. A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself______.

A. the most famous actress of the world

B. playing the leading female role in the play

C. as famous as the greatest actor of the world

D. no less famous than the leading actor of the day

40. The concluding sentence “chances like this happen once in a blue moon”means_______.

A. this is something which happens once in a while

B. this is a highly profitable chance

C. this is something highly possible

D. this is a very rare chance

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage: (艺术类~~~易)Pablo Ruiz Picasso was the favorite child of his family. He was the only boy among a great many girl cousins. That was enough to make him important, but his father loved him especially because he knew his son was going to be an artist. Pablo knew the word for pencil even before he could say Mamma and Papa. When he was small, he spent hours by himself making delightful little drawings of animals and people. If his mother sent him out to play in the square, he went on drawing in the dust under the tree. One of his favorite models was his younger sister, lola.

Don Jose Ruiz, Pablo’s father, was director of the museum at Malaga in southern Spain. He earned only small salary, but there was not much work to do and he was able to practise his hobby, which was painting pigeons. Don Jose loved pigeons very much. He painted them dead or alive in ones and twos and in dozens. Sometimes he painted them on paper, cut them out and stuck them on to canvas; sometimes he stuck real feathers on to his pictures. He knew a great deal about the technique of painting and he taught it all to Pablo.

Life in Malaga was very pleasant. In the hot, Mediterranean sunshine father and son would walk down to the beach to look at the boats on the shore or wander round the open, markets. They made a strange pair. Don Jose was tall and thin, with red hair and beard, sad grey eyes and a fine set of whiskers. He was so shy and correct that he was nicknamed “the Englishman”. Pablo was quite the opposite. He had his mother’s small, strong build; he had straight black hair, and bright black eyes that noticed everything that was going on around him.

Writing

Water pollution comes from many sources. One major source is waste products from various industries that are piped into nearby lakes or rivers. Another is oil or other fuels which spill into the ocean from barges or ships carrying the fuels Water pollution is harmful. Industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless. Oil spill in the sea is killing enormous numbers of fish and birds. What is more, polluted water is an increasing danger to public health. It causes people to have diseases.

Obviously, water pollution has a serious problem. What can we do about it in order to survive on earth? First, we can make great efforts to clean up polluted water and limit further pollution of water. Second, we can insist that water pollution control laws be passed and strictly enforced. Third, we can personally help to prevent water pollution by not throwing trash or garbage into any stream or lake.

Finally, we can also protect ourselves against polluted water. If we go on a camping trip, for instance, we can avoid drinking water that is unsafe to drink and avoid swimming in water that is found to be polluted. By doing so, we will be able to live

a healthier and happier life.

成人本科学士学位英语考试试题及答案(B卷) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly ail the teachers are women, mostly married. (76) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness. 1. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children__________. A. sensible and sensitive B. competitive and interested C. curious and friendly D. happy and co-operative 2. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think__________. A. children are reluctant to help each other B. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operation C. children should grow up with competitive ideas D. schools give little actual instruction to children 3. The author's attitude towards American education can be best described as__________. A. favorable B. negative C. tolerant D. unfriendly 4. The American educational system emphasizes__________. A. material wealth B. competition C. co-operation D. personal benefit 5. The word "sociable" (Line 8, Paragraph 2) most probably means__________. A. fond of talking freely B. friendly with other people C. concerned about social welfare D. happy at school Passage 2
