Read the following passage. For each numbered blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

A market is commonly thought of as a place where commodities are bought and sold. Thus fruit and vegetables are sold wholesale at Covent Garden Market and meat is sold wholesale at Smithfield Market. But there are markets for things 21 commodities, in the usual sense. There are 22 estate markets, foreign exchange markets, labor markets, short-term capital markets, and so on; there may be a market for anything which has a price. And there may be no particular place 23 which dealings are confined. Buyers and sellers may be 24 over the whole world and instead of actually meeting together in a

market-place they may deal with one another 25 telephone, telegram, cable or letter.

26 dealings are restricted to a particular place, the 27 may consist wholly or in part of agents acting 28 instructions from clients far away. Thus agents buy meat at Smithfield on behalf of 29 butchers all over England; and 30 on the London Stock Exchange buy and sell 31 on instructions from clients all over the world. We must therefore define a

market 32 any area over which buyers and sellers are 33 such close touch with one another, either directly or 34 dealers, that the prices 35 in one part of the market affect the prices paid in other parts.

Modern means of communication are so rapid that a buyer can discover what price a seller is asking, and can accept 36 if he wishes, 37 he may be thousands of miles away. Thus the market for anything is, 38 , the whole world. But in fact things have, normally, only a local or 39 market.

This may be because nearly the whole demand is concentrated in one locality. These special local demands, 40 , are of quite minor importance. The main reason why many things have not a world market is that they are costly or difficult to transport.

Section III Reading Comprehension (40 points)

Directions:

Read the following four passages. Answer the questions below each passage by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Passage One

Care is life, but in our society we have diminished and undermined it. We have radically overhauled competition, independence, self-reliance, and aggression, making of them the organizing principles around which we construct our politics and policies, our ethics, and even many of our personal relationships.

But no society, no individual, can function without care. That is why in so many respects our lives no longer seem to work: why so many are so

unfulfilled at work and at home, and why we complain that the people on whom we depend for gentleness and generosity, empathy and concern, no longer seem to have the time or energy to care. The social devaluation of care threatens to corrupt and compromise all who need it and all who give it.

There is a window on our disorder in the movie Wall Street. It comes in a scene in which Charlie Sheen, the poor boy who made good as the young protégé of Michael Douglas, and Daryl Hannah, the woman who is determined never to be a loser, engaged in frantic acquisition to decorate his newly purchased Manhattan apartment. They fill it with extravagantly expensive modern art, furnishings, and the most up-to-date culinary gadgets. The only thing they lack is the time to enjoy the things they’ve worked so hard to acquire. They have a life-style but no life.

Too many of us have been reduced to a version of this emotional deprivation in the midst of apparent material plenty. We have children other people care for, friends we have no time to socialize with, and spouses about whom we complain but with whom we have no time to struggle to create more fulfilling relationships. We have also--perhaps unwittingly and surely unwisely--abdicated our moral responsibilities as citizens. Too many of us don’t even bother to vote these days, and too often those who do bother vote against--not for--those political candidates who would support an agenda on which caregiving occupied a central place. Many citizens’ main concern is to pay less in taxes rather than to create a politics that will support the kind of caring culture that will nourish us all.

41. The author of the passage suggests that, so far as such concepts as

competition, independence, aggression, and self-reliance are concerned, our society should ______.

A) celebrate them as the organizing principles of our democracy.

B) see them as clear manifestations of our nation’s supremacy

C) understand the ways in which they improve our lives

D) make them less central to our everyday functioning

42. The third paragraph’s purpose is to illustrate the difference between _______.

A) film and real life

B) life and life-style

C) poverty and wealth

D) caring and sharing

43. Which of the following ideas, while NOT DIRECTLY STATED, can still

reasonably be inferred from the passage?

A) Increasing our taxes for selected social services would improve the

quality of our lives.

B) Other people, caregivers, often take care of our children for us.

C) The characters in the film Wall Street are unable to enjoy the things

they worked so hard to acquire.

D) We have no time to create better relationships with our spouses.

44. As it i s used in the line: “We have also--perhaps unwittingly and surely

unwisely--abdicated our moral responsibilities as citizens,” the word abdicated most nearly means ______.

A) abandoned

B) resurrected

C) performed

D) required

45. It is clear fro m the author’s attitude, as to what has happened to care

in our society, that she feels people in our society should ______.

A) change the values which we have traditionally held

B) contemplate the ways in which material plenty works for us

C) learn how to make our lives emotionally richer

D) see that it is better to have a lifestyle than a life

Passage Two

One of the most dangerous drugs for pregnant women to consume is alcohol. Because alcohol is delivered quickly into the blood and passes quickly into the tissues and membranes, the human fetus(胎儿) is particularly vulnerable to its effects. In fact, the negative effects on a fetus are so pronounced that babies born after exposure to alcohol are said to be suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome(综合症).

As a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol is passed into her bloodstream almost simultaneously. Moreover, because the bloodstream of the fetus is inextricably tied to that of the mother, the alcohol passes directly into the bloodstream of the fetus as well. And, what is more, the concentration of alcohol in the fetus is exactly the same as in the mother.

For the mother, this concentration is not a problem because her liver can remove one ounce of alcohol from her system per hour. However, the fetus's liver is not completely developed (how developed it is depends on its stage of development). The rate at which it is able to eliminate the alcohol from

the blood of the fetus is much slower. Eventually, the alcohol will be returned to the mother's system by passing across the placenta(胎盘), but this process is slow. By the time this takes place, major neurological damage may have already occurred. Research has shown that as little as one drink of alcohol can produce significant, irreversible damage to the fetus.

Babies born after exposure to alcohol generally exhibit facial distortion, inability to concentrate, and difficulty in remembering. Simply speaking, it is imperative that pregnant women avoid alcohol.

46. What is the main topic of this passage?

A) Women and drugs

B) The dangers of pregnancy

C) The fetus and alcohol

D) Drinking and the human body

47. In line 4, the word pronounced most closely means ______.

A) evident

B) spoken

C) described

D) unfortunate

48. According to the passage, how does the concentration of alcohol in a fetus compare to that

in the mother?

A) The concentration is more.

B) The concentration is less.

C) The concentration is equivalent.

D) The concentration cannot be measured.

49. It can be inferred that the development of a fetus’s liver depends on ______.

A) how many months pregnant the mother is

B) how much alcohol the mother has consumed

C) how large the fetus is

D) how well the mother has taken care of the fetus

50. According to the passage, how is alcohol finally returned to the mother's system?

A) it is carried through the bloodstream

B) it is transferred across the placenta

C) it is expelled by the fetus's liver

D) it is not completely returned

Passage Three

Impatience characterizes young knowledge workers. They want to make their mark fast. So it's important to get across to them in a challenging manner the idea that big achievements rarely come easily or quickly. Point out that the little successes are essential. Show that they in turn become the foundation on which reputations are built and from which more important tasks can be attacked.

A variety of job assignments, including job or project rotation, also keeps a job from becoming dull. Whereas it's natural for some individuals to want to move ahead immediately to more difficult assignments, under proper guidance they can continue to learn and to gain versatility by working on a number of jobs that are essentially of the same complexity. This way they gain breadth, if not depth.

Probably the greatest offense to guard against when dealing with younger specialists is to reject ideas out of hand. You must listen?and listen objectively?to their suggestions. Avoid being overcritical. You want to nurture an inquiring mind with a fresh approach. You'll discourage it quickly if you revert too often to "We've tried that before and it won't work here."

One sure way to disenchant young college graduates is flagrantly misuse their talents. Expect them to do some routine work, of course. But don't make their daily work just one long series of errands. This includes such break-in assignments as performing routine calculations, digging up reference material, and operating reproduction equipment. One large manufacturing company recently interviewed a number of promising engineers who had left them. The company found that the overwhelming complaint was that the company not only did not provide work that was challenging but also expected far too little from them in the way of performance.

51. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ______.

A). young workers shouldn't expect to accomplish a lot overnight

B). young workers are usually impatient and so can't achieve much in their work

C). little successes are more important than big achievements

D). it is important to challenge the young workers from time to time

52. The underlined word "they" in the first paragraph (line 4) refers to ______.

A). young workers

B). big achievements

C). reputations and important tasks

D). little successes

53. In order to gain "breadth" (2nd paragraph), young workers should ______.

A). stick to one job for a sufficiently long period of time

B). change their jobs as frequently as possible

C). try some other jobs at more or less the same level

D). move to more difficult assignments as early as possible

54. From the 3rd paragraph we can conclude that the writer believes that ______.

A). young workers are usually very difficult to deal with

B). some administrators tend not to trust in young workers' creativity

C). young workers' suggestions are usually objectively evaluated

D). administrators should try all the suggestions put forward by the young workers

55. In order to stimulate young workers' enthusiasm, administrators ______.

A). should not ask them to do routine work

B). should not let them start with the break-in assignments

C). should try to prevent them from leaving the company

D). should encourage them to do some tough jobs

Passage Four

In the 1920s, the pioneers of artificial intelligence (AI) predicted that, by the end of this century, computers would be conversing with us at work and robots would be performing our housework. But as useful as computers are, they are nowhere close to achieving anything remotely resembling these early aspirations for humanlike behavior. Never mind something as complex as conversation: the most powerful computers struggle to reliably recognize the shape of an object, the most elementary of tasks for a ten-month-old kid.

A growing group of AI researchers think they know where the field went wrong. The problem, the scientists say, is that AI has been trying to separate the highest, most abstract levels of thought, like language and mathematics, and to duplicate them with logical, step-by-step programs. A new movement in AI, on the other hand, takes a closer look at the more roundabout way in which nature came up with intelligence. Many of these researchers study evolution and natural adaptation instead of formal logic and conventional programs. Rather than digital computers and transistor, some want to work with brain cells and proteins. The results of these early efforts are as

promising as they are peculiar, and the new nature-based AI movement is slowly but surely moving to the forefront of the field.

Imitating the brain’s neural (神经的)network is a huge step in the right direction, says computer scientist and biophysicist Michael Conrad, but it still misses an important aspect of natural intelligence. “People tend to treat brain as if it were made up of color-coded transistors,” he e xplains. “But it’s not simply a clever network of switches. There are lots of important things going on inside the brain cells themselves.” Specifically, Conrad believes that many of the brain’s capabilities stem from the pattern-recognition proficiency of the individual molecules that make up each brain cell. The best way to build an artificially intelligent device, he claims, would be to build around the same sort of molecular skills.

Right now, the notion that conventional computers and software are fundamentally incapable of matching the processes that take place in the brain remains controversial. But if it proves true, then the efforts of Conrad and his fellow AI rebels could turn out to be the only game in town.

56. The author say that the powerful computers of today ________________.

A). are capable of reliably recognizing the shape of an object

B). are close to exhibiting humanlike behavior

C). are not very different in their performance from those of the 50’s

D). still cannot communicate with people in a human language

57. The new trend in AI research stems from ____________.

A). the shift of focus of study on to the recognition of the shapes of objects

B). the belief that human intelligence cannot be duplicated with logical, step-by-step programs

C). the aspirations of scientists to duplicate the intelligence of a

ten-month-old child

D). the efforts made by scientists in the study of the similarities between transistors and brain cells

58. Conrad and his group of AI researchers have been making enormous efforts to ________.

A). find a roundabout way to design powerful computers

B). build a computer using a clever network of switches

C). find out how intelligence developed in nature

D). separate the highest and most abstract levels of thought

59. What’s the author’s opinion about the new AI movement?

A). It has created a sensation among artificial intelligence researchers but will soon die out.

B). It’s a breakthrough in duplicating human thought processes.

C). It’s more like a peculiar game rather than a real scientific effort.

D). It may prove to be in the right direction though nobody is sure of its future prospects.

60. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase “the only game in town” (Para.4)?

A). The only approach to building an artificially intelligent computer.

B). The only way for them to win a prize in artificial intelligence research.

C). The only area worth studying in computer science.

D). The only game they would to play in town.

In this section there is a passage in English. Translate it into Chinese and write your answer on ANSWER SHEET 2.

The nature of my contribution to the Women’s Liberation Movement is not political but psychological. I get thousands of letters from women who have been liberated by the reading of my diaries, which are a long study of the psychological obstacles that have prevented woman from her fullest evolution and flowering. I studied the negative influence of religion, of racial and cultural patterns, which action alone and no political slogans can dissolve. I describe in the diaries the many restrictions confining woman. The diary itself was an escape from judgment, a place

in which to analyze the truth of woman’s situation. I believe that is where the sense of freedom has to begin. I say begin, not remain. A reformation of woman’s emotional attitudes and beliefs will enable her to act more effectively. I am not speaking of the practical, economic, sociological problems, as I believe many of them are solvable with clear thinking and intelligence. I am merely placing the emphasis on a confrontation of ourselves because it is a source of strength.
