At the beginning of the 21st century, whether we want it or not, globalisation and the financial and economic crisis have become the greatest challenges for all economic and political alliance s. Basically two kinds of responses have emerged to globalization. One is the modernization response. This does not run away from globalization as a challenge; rather it uses it to develop the economy and to improve economic and social competitiveness. The other kind of response is built on illusions; it is the closed, nationalistic, radical response, in many cases clothed in the cloak of religion. In the Far East, the response still remains to be seen. Obviously, China has chosen its own way: quick and successful modernization. The history of the past few decades proved that it has been a correct choice, given the fact that China is now regarded more and more as a key factor in the world economy and even of the world politics. This idea was clearly pointed out by the G-20 Pittsburgh summit in 2009.

Of course, the process of social and economic modernization shows some particularities. I am convinced that the processes of modernization, change and reform are of fundamental importance in China, as proven by the opening-up and reform policies introduced 30 years ago. Naturally, progress has its own pathways and manners in Europe, China, the USA, India or in the Arab region. I think that everyone should respect this on the basis of high cultural tradition.

Asia is a dynamic region and will be the key driver of global growth and prosperity in the year to come. The spectacular and fast economic growth of China is one of the most important guarantees for the development of Shanghai, and Shanghai is both a part and an engine of this development.

The contacts between Hungary and China date back several hundred years. In modern times, the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations and the progress those relations have made prove the stability of our friendship. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction for me that since 2002–when Hungary launched the New Asia policy during my term as Prime Minister一political and cultural contacts, economic and human relations have strengthened and intensified with China and the Far East region in general, including Shanghai. I am profoundly convinced that Shanghai deserves to be the venue of the World Expo 2010. This city is a symbol of achievement, hard work, persistence and long-term foresight. It has shown the world an example of how thousand-year traditions may be harmonized with quick change, development and new, courageous initiatives. I am sure the Shanghai World Expo will be a great success, offering an opportunity for a dialogue between different parts of world for peaceful, friendly cooperation.

I feel privileged to heartily congratulate the people and the government of the People's Republic of China on the grand occasion of the World Expo 2010 to be held in Shanghai. Since the beginning, the World Expo has served as a platform to showcase human achievement in the areas of science and technology, industrial goods and products and economic development. With the active participation of so many countries, it also serves as a stage for cross-cultural dialogue and the exchange of solutions. This spectacular occasion is a demonstration of China's peaceful rise as an economic and political giant of the 21th century.

This is indeed in the interest of the international community, especially neighboring countries like Nepal. We in Nepal are convinced that the modern achievements of China will benefit its neighbors in areas such as infrastructure

development, increased connectivity and assistance for the development of our poor economies. I understand that World Expo 2010, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expecting the participation of over 200 countries and international organizations as well as 70 million visitors. That will set a new record in World Expo history. The fact that this Expo is taking place in a vibrant city like Shanghai adds color to the event itself.

I feel that the theme of "Better City, Better Life" appropriately demonstrates how China has set an example for all emerging economies in how to create new cities, build necessary infrastructure like roads, water and sanitation and

security, and provide for the well-being of people. China's undertaking in the area of sustainable development is worth replicating in other regions, especially in South Asia. Today we celebrate together and rejoice with our Chinese friends. My best wishes for the grand success of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China.

It is a great honor for me to be invited by the Swiss government to personally participate in the pageant of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China as the Commissioner-General for the Swiss Pavilion, which is a very important assignment. As a foreigner who came to China at the very beginning of its reforms and opening-up and who has always studied the country with persistent attention and love, I sincerely hope that I can use my experience and knowledge to help Switzerland improve its understanding about China. Meanwhile, I will also help China better understand Switzerland to promote close cooperation between the two nations.

I have been an old friend of China. I made my first visit to this country at the very start of its reforms and opening-up in 1978, when I was appointed by a Swiss company to prepare for the incorporation of a joint venture. At that time, I was full of curiosity about this strange country. I still remember clearly how Chinese women used to wear the same unvarying hairstyle and gloomy-colored suits and how people stuck to their traditional ideology. After that, I revisited this country several times and once resided there as the Swiss Ambassador to China. In the early 1990s, I started collecting modern Chinese artwork and communicating with Chinese artists, through whose eyes and experiences I have understood this country's history and culture and the lives of its people. It has been an honor for me to witness the fundamental changes in China and to personally participate in its reforms and opening-up policies. In a mere three decades, China has taken on a brand new look in every aspect and exhibited to the whole world its great vigor and dazzling glamour.

Meanwhile, however, I have also seen how China's rapid economic growth has created some problems, such as environmental damage and a gap between urban and rural development.

I believe an understanding and concern about these problems helped motivate this World Expo to choose the theme "Better City, Better Life." Reaching beyond the scope of its predecessor s, which centered their exhibitions on scientific and technological inventions, progress and achievements, this World Expo has innovatively provided the whole world with a platform for joint discussion about urban development issues. It fully exhibits China’s courage and resolution in facing up to problems in its own development and brims with foresight and intelligence.

Since urban problems arising from rapid economic growth have become a hot and thorny issue for the whole world, many nations have been trying to find a "key" for addressing these

problems. Switzerland once faced many problems similar to those China is facing today. At the first glance, Switzerland and China seem dissimilar. Switzerland is a small territory with a population of only 7.4 million. It is not as vast or populated as China and suffers a

per-capita shortage of resources. However, the two nations are actually facing some similar development problems such as density of population and large tracts of inhospitable land. One-third of Switzerland’s territory consists of rocks, forests and lakes. Over a long time, Switzerland has been looking for an approach to sustainable development to achieve harmony between urban and rural areas, between human beings and nature.

In human history, cities have drawn criticism as often as praise. Through the development of cities, mankind has freed itself from the restrictions of nature. At the same time, however,

mankind has gradually lost its attachment to nature. It's ironic that the independence acquired from urban expansion has actually fettered our freedom. Facing this contradiction, we must therefore reorient urban life to achieve a balance between development and nature, between technology and humanity. We must cease allowing the vanity of urbanization to usurp nature, our fellow human beings and our core values. This is the paramount challenge of our generation.

The theme of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China–"Better City, Better Life"–exemplifies the mission we face. We must address the adverse effects of technology with better technology. We must save society by developing better concepts than those we call progress in the face of rampant development. We must re-establish harmonious ties with nature. None of these missions can be accomplished at one stroke. Instead, they require our acute awareness, our determined cooperation and our commitment to achieving success in our aims. The World Expo will duly provide us with a rare opportunity toward that goal.

As the host city for a milestone event with such an enlightening theme, Shanghai has shown its courage in addressing the challenges of future urban development and defining the global responsibilities of cities. It is my belief that through World Expo 2010, China will advance from the world factory of material production into an international cradle of civilization's promising future.

To a certain extent, World Expo 2010 Shanghai China is more significant than the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Unlike the Olympic Games that only lasted three to four weeks, this World Expo will showcase the profound history and culture of China for several months, during which visitors from all over the world will be able to view first-hand China's current image and its image for the future.

World Expos have a personal meaning in my family. Two of my grand-aunts were from Lithuania in Eastern Europe. In the beginning of last century, they left Lithuania and chose to go to St. Louis in the United States.

Why did they choose to go to the United States? It was because World Expo 1900 was held in St. Louis. They believed the United States would be full of opportunities because of the exposition. The descendant s of my grand-aunts still live in St. Louis today.

The hosting of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China will create unimaginable opportunities and will have a profound impact on Shanghai, China and even the whole world. This event coincides with the continuing growth of China's global influence and will leave its imprint for a long time to come.

The success of China's reform and opening-up during the past 30 years can be attributed to the practical and realistic policies of the Chinese government. When policies were unfeasible or unsuitable, government leaders weren't afraid to change course in positive ways.

World Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a beautiful experience for all. I applaud the planning of this great event.

As an actor, I have visited many countries and countless cities big and small. I have traveled from Hong Kong to Hollywood, from China to the outside world and then back to my homeland again. In one sense, I have completed a “circle.” After meeting so many people and seeing so many different lifestyles, I have become increasingly aware of the importance that a healthy, eco-friendly environment plays in the lives of city residents.

There is a saying that “people who live in cities create the urban landscape.” In my opinion, it is human beings that constitute cities, create a beautiful life and live it. Human beings are the cells and souls of cities. If people deserve top billing in development policies, as we have often heard, then development of our cities should be people-oriented. It is people that give cities their culture, character and creativity, turning them into landscapes that beautify our earth.

Just like human beings, a city will grow in a healthy manner only with warm sunlight, fresh air and clean water. These are the fundamental conditions that allow urban dwellers to raise families successfully, and only by the mutual commitment of all people can development of harmonious relations exist. Through the convergence of harmonious cities across the world, the earth would become even more lovely.

I served as an image ambassador for Beijing’s bid to host the Olympic Games, and I am honored to work in a similar capacity for World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, another great international event. While the Olympic Games dealt with sports, the World Expo is business-oriented. This is not, however, merely a sort of gala. As its theme “Better City, Better Life” implies, this event is closely related to our life and its quality. This World Expo proclaims a great theme. Environmental protection has now moved to the world’s center stage.

Rather than simply trumpeting the World Expo as an image ambassador, I, as a citizen of China and a compatriot of Shanghai, would just like to express the love and confidence Shanghai residents hold for their city. I want to raise public awareness of environmental protection at the grassroots level. No matter which city we live in, we share the same blue sky above us, and we also hope to leave this blue sky to our future generations. For the sake of our cities and everyone living in them, we can all contribute in our daily lives by saving water, recycling water, turning off lights we don’t need, reducing dependence on air conditioners, making the best use of paper, recycling wastes, preferring public transport, rejecting food made from wild animals, and properly disposing of used batteries. When we work together to protect our cities, we are also protecting our earth.

Speaking from my own experience I’d like to tell you that we should not only trust ourselves, but also trust humanity, trust kindness, trust mercy and more importantly, trust our nation. Belief is a power that creates a beautiful life for us all.

I am confident this World Expo will be an unprecedented event in that cause.

Although I am running all over the world from one tournament to another all year round, I always cherish a particular attachment to Shanghai, one of my favorite cities in Asia and even in the whole world.

I have been in Shanghai five times since 2002. This is a wonderful city, very modern and full of skyscrapers. It is different from Switzerland and has many new things that fascinate me. Of course, the restaurants here are really great. Every time I come to Shanghai, I experience something new and different. On my way into town from the airport, I am always amazed by the constant changes taking place in this city, such as the skyscrapers rising up in Lujiazui and the downtown areas changing their look with each passing day. The greatest excitement for me is the exceptional enthusiasm of the tennis fans here. They all anticipate our visit so eagerly and with such great warmth that I always feel reluctant to leave once I am in Shanghai. Among my tennis fans, those in Shanghai are the warmest and the most loyal in the world.

I know 2010 is an important year for Shanghai and this World Expo will further enhance the charms of this energetic city. In fact, I already felt Shanghai’s World Expo“pulse”during my last visit to Shanghai. I saw so many posters and slogans promoting the exposition, and some working sketches of the venues still under construction. Together, they remind us of the approaching of the World Expo. Every time I saw them, my heart would leap. Perhaps the most lingering impression for me is Haibao, the spritely blue mascot of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China that greets visitors everywhere across the metropolis.

I have never visited any World Expo before, but I know something about the one held in Germany and another hosted in Aichi, Japan. I believe World Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be the most successful of them all. I am looking forward to it eagerly.

It is a pity that I have a heavy schedule of tournaments next year and may not be able to visit Shanghai during this World Expo. However, I will certainly come and see the World Expo site when I am next in Shanghai. The top attraction for me will surely be the Swiss Pavilion, though I would visit others as time permits. I have heard that the China Pavilion looks great, so I think it will be a must-see for me.

Every time I come to Shanghai for a tournament, I find the warmth and friendship of local people among the most overwhelming of anywhere in the world. This is why I feel such a deep attachment to the city. Shanghai has become one of the most renowned tennis cities in the world. The welcome I have always received here has been heart-warming. I am sure that other people coming from across the world who visit the World Expo will be equally impressed by Shanghai’s hospitality.

In the end, my family and I would like to send our best and most sincere wishes for your wonderful World Expo.
