A bizarre upside-down house created on the grounds of a German zoo will be open to the public on March 30, the Daily Mail reported. The crazy house stands on a pointed roof and is supported by steel beams in the attic (see photo). Inside the front door, it has an upside-down kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. It was also built on a slight incline to challenge the viewer's perspective still further.

An extraordinary spectacle was captured by a photographer at the Zurich Zoo in Switzerland when a zebra leaned into the gaping mouth of a hippopotamus (see photo), the Daily Mail reported Thursday. The zebra seems unaware of his precarious position. Despite appearing to be just seconds away from imminent death, the striped creature escaped unharmed. Much to the surprise of zoo visitors, the animal was merely cleaning the hippo's teeth.

An American architect has broken his own Guinness World Record by building the largest house of free-standing playing cards, the Daily Mail reported Thursday. Bryan Berg took 44 days and 218792 cards to create a replica of the Venetian Macau, which is on display in its namesake luxury hotel. Weighing 272kg and measuring 10.5m by just under 3m, the model consisted of cards stacked without glue or tape.

A car that runs on coffee beans has been unveiled in the UK. Nicknamed the
Car-puccino, it has been created using a converted 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco bought for EUR400. An expert explained that "Coffee, like wood or coal, has some carbon content so you can use it as a fuel." At 25-50 times the cost of running a car on petrol, the invention won't please any motor industry bean-counters.

Touted as the world's first "zero star hotel," the Null Stern Hotel in the town of St Gallen, Switzerland is in fact a converted underground nuclear bunker (see photo), the Daily Telegraph reported. The hotel can host 14 guests in 6 single beds and 4 double beds. Beds start at 25 Swiss francs (about $23.2) for a first-class bed and 30 Swiss francs for a luxury bed.

A pair of greedy squirrels immersed themselves in coconut shells (see photo), which had been hollowed out for them by householder Jane Roberts, Daily Mail reported Monday. They were regular visitors to Ms Roberts' garden in the UK and often stole the food put out for the birds. Jane therefore put out 2 nuts and suspended them on pieces of string from the washing line only to catch the "thieves".

Using only untreated brown cardboard and clear packing tape, each team built a boat that could hold 2 students. They paddled across the 23-meter Lakewood High School pool.

A "baby" robot that can learn to roll over and crawl through trial and error was unveiled Wednesday in Osaka, Japan. The 50cm, 3.5kg baby-type robot, called the
"M3-neony," is equipped with 22 motors and 90 touch sensors, as well as cameras and microphones in its eyes and ears for face and voice recognition. It can also learn to stand and walk by itself.

A killer whale at SeaWorld Orlando, in Florida, fatally attacked a woman trainer Wednesday as horrified visitors looked on. Witnesses said the 6-ton bull orca suddenly jumped out of tank, grabbed Dawn Brancheau, 40, around the waist and "thrashed her all around". The guests were evacuated and the park was closed. The victim was one of the park's most experienced animal trainers.

Four-year-old male cat Bustopher, who lives in Australia, thinks and acts like a chicken, Australian media reported Wednesday. The funny feline's owner, Naomi Oliver, said Bustopher often wanders around in the chicken pen, playing with the chickens as if he were one of them. Oliver also caught Bustopher in the ultimate act of hen-like behavior: sitting on a nest of eggs, waiting for them to hatch.(See photo) For days, Bustopher only left the nest for a quick bite to eat or a cat nap.

Go grandmaster Lee Se-dol of South Korea and computer program AlphaGo are facing off in the final game of the century of the ancient Chinese board game. The final game of the best-of-five series began at 1 pm, or 0400 GMT, in Seoul. Lee is the Go World Champion. He won the fourth game after three straight losses to AlphaGo. The computer program was developed by Google's London-based artificial intelligence subsidiary DeepMind. Lee won playing white stones. China's Gender Imbalance Likely to Decline The rising trend of China's disproportionate sex ratio at birth has been curbed, but remained at an alarmingly high ratio of 117.6 newborn boys for every 100 girls in 2013, a senior family planning official said on June 26, 2014. "Despite the Chinese government managing to keep the imbalanced sex ratio at birth from rising, it is still very hard to achieve the goal set by the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012 –2017) that the ratio should decline to 115 boys for 100 girls," said Vice-Minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission Wang Peian. According to Xinhua News Agency, the figures for the previous four years were, 119.45 in 2009, 117.94 in 2010, 117.78 in 2011 and 117.7 in 2012, far higher than the normal 103 to 107 ratio. China's gender imbalance is getting worse after fetal ultrasound examinations were widely available in the 1980s. The ratio reached a record 120.56 in 2008. The high ratio deprives girls of their right to live, damages women's physical and mental health, and makes it difficult for men to find a wife, Wang said. Since 2011, the Chinese government has launched a series of campaigns to crack down on the sex-selective abortion of female fetuses and to end the long-standing tradition of valuing boys more than girls. A program called "Achieve Girls' Dreams" was initiated by the national health authorities in 2013, in an attempt to enhance girls' welfare and reverse the gender imbalance. The program aims to help girls from financially challenged families in rural areas. As the most gender imbalanced country in the world, even if the Chinese government takes action to rebalance the sex ratio, the long-term picture is uncertain, American news website Science Daily reported based on the investigation conducted by Golley and Tyers on China's gender imbalance. The report said that the imbalanced ratio caused by the preference for sons, which is historically strong in Chinese minds, is due to the fact that many believe that sons are needed to offer financial support to aging parents, continue the family name and receive the family inheritance The report also pointed out that the high male-to-female sex ratios would bring about a wide range of economic and social consequences, such as marriage squeeze, higher levels of savings and an increase in property and violent crimes.
