四、Reading Comprehension(共 4 道试题,共 40 分。)

1. A Day in the Life of a Carer

Lily is 70 years old and she takes care of her 91-year-old mother. She told us about caring for her mother.

I wake up early every day, it's usually about 6.30 am, and wait until I hear Tilly, my mum, moving

about.

Then I make her a cup of tea. At about half past seven she gets up and we have breakfast together.

We

normally just have toast, but on Sundays we always have bacon and eggs. After breakfast she reads the

newspaper, then she sits by the window and waves to the neighbours as they walk by.

She hardly ever goes out but she is very proud of her personal appearance, so she goes to the hairdresser once a month.

She doesn't like being left on her own for very long, so I always arrange for a neighbour to come and sit

with her when I go out. Now and again, my friend and neighbour, Joan, comes to spend the day with her,

and I can go and have lunch with another friend, May, who lives in town.

I have a brother, Syd. He comes to stay two or three times a year. He is very good and keeps in

touch,

but he lives 300 miles away. Once a year, he collects mum and takes her to stay with him in London for

a week. She doesn't really like going because it's a long journey, but I need the rest.

Sally, the nurse, comes to see mum regularly. My next-door neighbour, Jack, often calls in. In the evening

we usually watch TV and we sometimes play cards. Mum is fantastic for her age. But I can never decide

to go anywhere spontaneously. I always have to plan it, so I feel a bit trapped. But what is the alternative?

An old people's home? I couldn't do that to my mother.

1). What does this passage mainly deal with?

2. THE FITTEST DO LIVE LONGER

A study has shown that fitness is the key to long life, irrespective of body shape or even smoking

habits.

Researchers discovered that people who exercise live longer than those who do not, even if they are

overweight and smoke.

The study found that the least fit of the 6,000 middle-aged men in the study were five times more

likely to

die within six years of the start of the research than the fittest. This was true whether or not the men had

heart problems, smoked or were overweight. Scientists concluded that it was better to be fat and active

than skinny and sedentary. Dr Ken Cooper, a fitness expert, said, "You are better off smoking

a packet

of cigarettes a day and exercising regularly than being a non-smoker and sedentary." Although he adds,

"But don't misunderstand me. I am not endorsing smoking. I am trying to tell you how dangerous it is to

be sedentary."

However, the study appears to fly in the face of research last year which concluded that more than

30,000 people die prematurely every year in Britain from illnesses caused by being overweight.

The British Government is putting pressure on manufacturers to reduce high levels of sugar in food and

to restrict the hard-sell of junk food to children in order to improve the nation's health. But the new study

suggests the Government should encourage more people to exercise.

3. The entertainment profession, or "show business", attracts many young people. Unfortunately,

only very

few can hope to become famous and rich. Talent is not enough, because show business is as competitive as any other business. Without a good manager, a performer can never hope to succeed.

Fashion is important in this business, too. The best tailor in this world will never be a success if he

makes old-fashioned clothes. In exactly the same way, a performer must change his act in order to follow

the taste of the moment. This is true for all performers: actors, dancers and perhaps most of all, for

singers.

"Pop" stands for "popular", and a pop singer has to work very hard to become popular. He must either

give the public what they already want, or he must find a new way of singing that will attract their

attention. Even when he has succeeded, and his CDs are sold everywhere, he cannot relax. Then

he

must work harder than ever to stay popular, because there are always younger singers trying to become

famous and to steal some of the popularity.

The life of a successful pop singer is not at all easy. He can only relax when he is alone, because everything he does is watched and reported in a special newspaper written for the fans. The fans are

the most important people in the world for the singer. They buy his CDs or VCDs. They go to his concerts, and watch his MTV. And it is they who make the singer rich and famous. But they can be very

annoying too. Sometimes their enthusiasm gets so wild and mad that they do anything to attract attention and their behavior is as uncontrolled as possible. They shout and cry very loudly during the

performance. In order to get a "gift", they steal everything from the singer: his handkerchiefs (手帕),

his T shirts, his toothbrush. They sometimes tear off buttons from the singer's clothes, and they even

cut off pieces of the unfortunate singer's hair. Many singers have been forced to hide, and some who

have not been so lucky as to escape have almost nothing on at the end of their performance with almost

everything taken away.

A pop singer has to spend a lot of money on clothes, because he must always look smart, or at

any rate,

different. He must have a luxurious car. And most important – he must always keep smiling for the

benefit of his public. To keep his image young in his fan's mind, he is not allowed to grow old.

1). What is not mentioned as the important thing to be a success in the entertainment profession

in the passage?

A. Being talented.

B. Having a good manager.

C. Getting the best tailor.

D. Following the taste of the moment.

正确答案:D 满分:2 得分:2

正确答案:B 满分:2 得分:2

4. We often use gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that the gestures can be

understood

in different ways.

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying . Fear is another

emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature,

a

phrase like ‘he went pale and began to tremble' suggests that the man is either very afraid or

he has

just got a very big shock. However, ‘he opened his eyes wide' is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese, surprise can be described in a phrase like ‘they stretched out their tongues!' “Stretching out your tongue” in English is an insulting gesture or expresses

strong dislike.

Even in the same culture, people differ in their ability to understand and express feelings.

Experiments

in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and

happiness on people's faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize

or understand body language than younger people do.

1). Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. We can easily understand what people's gestures mean.

正确答案:E 满分:2 得分:2

3). From the passage, we can conclude that ____________.

A. gestures can be used to express feelings

B. gestures can be more effectively used than words to express feelings

C. words are often more difficult to understand than gestures

B. are equally intelligent even if they have different backgrounds

D. may have different abilities to understand and express feelings

正确答案:E 满分:2 得分:0

5). The best title for this passage can be ____________.

The doctor came, examined him and said, “You will be well again in a few days if you take bull’s milk.” The king was very surprised, for he had never heard of a bull that gave milk. “How is it possible?” he asked. “Order Gulbo, the scholar, to get it for you. He can do anything.” The doctor was an enemy to Gulbo, and thought this would be a way of making him suffer. When he got home he sat thinking how to get out of the difficulties. His daughter, seeing him worried, asked what was the matter. Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: In this section there are four passages followed by a total of 15 multiple-choice questions. Read the passages carefully and then write your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. Passage One You may not have thought of it just this way, but the letter you write is part of you, and expression of your personality. Therefore to write letters that are mere patterns of form is to present a colorless personality. Letters, by their very nature, are too individual to be standardized. A letter may be absolutely perfect according to the standards of good taste and good form; but unless it also expresses something of the writer’s personality, it is not a good letter. In other words, don't be satisfied to write letters that are just correct and nothing more. Try to write letters that are correct for you... letters that are warm and alive with reflections of your own personality. And if this sounds like a platitude (陈词滥调), stop for a moment and think back over your recent correspondence. What was the most interesting letter you received? Was it a letter anyone could have written? Or was it a letter that instantly “came alive”as you read it—that brought the personality of the sender right into the room with you.
