One color that was used frequently was white. The first time Nick meets his cousin Daisy at Tom’and Daisy’s home, she was dressed totally in white. So as the house and its furnishings are also turned in light shades. This fact might be interpreted as beauty, cleanliness, wealth, innocence. Daisy’s color is white, she wears white dresses and recalls her “white girlhood” and this use of color helps her to characterize her as the unattainable “enchanted princess”who becomes personified as Gatsby’dream. The use of white, in reference to Daisy’wardrobe also symbolizes her laziness and uselessness within the story. She is completely devoid of any knowledge of the outside world. Something I found quite apparent was her obviously shallow, money grubbing motives. For example, when she is taken into Gatsby’s home for a t our, she is shown Gatsby’s beau tiful imported shirts. Daisy begins to cry, saying that these shirts are so beautiful. But what she is really expressing is her envy and jealousy of Gatsby’s new riches and all of his elaborate material possessions.

Another symbolic color is yellow.Yellow stands out as symbol of corruption and decay. Materialism has corrupted the citizens of East and West Egg because they center everything on money. When Gatsby entertains this wealthy class, the orchestra plays “yellow cocktail music.” Even Gatsby believes that he can win Daisy back with his money, thus he is described as wearing a “caramel-colored suit”when he lies about his past to Nick. The color yellow was used most frequently when there was a death. One of the first things that Fitzgerald wrote about when Myrtle died was when they laid her on a table in the garage. He wrote“ The garage, which was lit only by a yellow light in a swimming wire basket overhead”(pag e 127).Wilson her husband was in a dazed state, and kept referring to his car only as the“yellow car”(page 157)“That big yellow car”(page 141). That car led to Gatsby’s death. Just before Gatsby was shot by Wilson, Gatsby decided he was going to take a swim in his pool. He had not used it all summer. The chauffeur helped Gatsby fill up a mattress he was going to use in the pool.“Gatsby shouldered the mattress and started for the pool. Once he stopped and shifted it a little, and the chauffeur asked him if he needed help, but he shook his head and in a moment disappeared among the yellowing tress.” (page 162) Perhaps another sign of his demise.

In “The Great Gatsby,”the author uses blue symbolizing melancholy and calmness in order to make a contrast with the yellow symbolizing the state of clamor. All of this manifests the author’s critical attitude to the contemporary tendency- ostentation, pursuit for material enjoyment and money worship. First, in the valley of ashes, there is an advertisement board of great size on which paints the blue and gigantic eyes of Doctor T.J.Ecklburg. In many days under sun and rain, this pair of eyes is dimmed and seem to be tearing, looking at the valley of ashes and also the people there. The symbolized meaning of the blue eyes was not revealed until the eighth chapter. When George Wilson talked to Michaelis about his wife’s disloyalty to him, he said“She might fool me but she couldn’t fool God.”(page 159)Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that Wilson was looking at the eyes of DoctorT,J.Ecklburg. After understanding the symbolized meaning of this pair of eyes, we could move on to the symbolized meaning of the color of the eyes. God has been seeing everything, and he knows that Gats by’s dream will be doomed to be s hattered.

He knows the Wilsons’tragedy, Tom and Daisy’s coldness and mercilessness. So his eyes looked sorrowful and melancholy. The author ingeniously designed a vivid detail that on the advertisement board paints the enormous blue eyes of Doctor T.J.Ecklburg sadly looking at man’s world. All of this shows the author’s critical attitude towards the people’s life and idealism of that time. Fitsgerald reused the blue color on George Wilson who is a little character in this great wok. When Wilson first comes to appear in this novel, he is described as follows “He was a blond, spiritless man, and faintly handsome. When he saw us a gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes.”(page 78) He is quite different from other characters in the story. He lacked of the characteristic of inexhaustible energy belonging to that time and people in the story such as Mrs Wilson ,Gatsby or Tom. He was spiritless, but worked hard and was loyal to the family, but was not affected by vanity, just wanted to accumulate some money to live in the west and he believed God. These characteristics tally with the symbolized meaning of blue. But his desire didn’t instep with the cruel reality .Just because of this, he becomes the victim of that time. But it is on him that the author places his hopes, for he attempted to utilize this character and the blue’s symbolized meaning to call back the loss of faith, honesty and loyalty of that time .This character’s tragedy which was contrary to the trend of that time is a kind of criticism to that period of time.

Green is a very strong color in this book. It symbolizes hope. The image of green lamp appeared three times respectively at the crucial points of development, and played an important role in the process of modeling the protagonist Gatsby’s character. The green lamp first appeared at the end of chapter one, where Nick went back home in the evening and saw that Gatsby stared at the green light hung at the clock of Daisy’s house under the moon light. This green light means something special to Gatsby, for it has something to do with Daisy, Gatsby has cherished a dream, that is to marry Daisy who is an emblem of beauty and fortune to him. Later on, Daisy married to Tom, but Gatsby still firmly believed that he could seize her back as long s he could own enough money. Thus, t hat green light became the dream and hope in Gatsby’s heart.

The second mention of the green light happens at chapter five. When they met at Nick’s house.Gatsby invited Daisy to visit his magnificent mansion. During that visit, Daisy was deeply attracted by Gatsby’s great wealth and crying in excitement. At that moment, Gatsby thought that he had realized his five-year dream and talked with her of that green light hung at the dock of her home.“If it-wasn’t for the mist we could s ee your home across the bay.”(page 97)said Gatsby “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.” For him, Daisy was near at hand, so Gatsby thought that the dream represented by that green light had already come into reality.

The third appearance of the green light is arranged at the end of the novel. After Gatsby’s death, Nick reminded us him and that green light. Gatsby adhered constantly all his life to the pursuit of one dream and sought hard for that, yet he was totally unaware that dream was bound to be smashed. His personal cult is none other than money, in other words , he doesn’t realize what he pursues is something meaningless. So his dream will be necessarily shattered. But on the other hand Gatsby possesses stand fast belief for his own dream and pays his lifelong effort to realize it. This spirit

is worth recommending, for which that time lacks and which the author admitted. The image of the green light helps to establish the theme of the work and functions right as a banner.

At the beginning of Chapter two, the author depicted a certain desolate area of land which located between West Egg and New York and which was named by the author the village of ashes. “This is the place where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and ris ing smoke”(page 28) The valley of ashes represent a modern world, which is like a grotesque hell created by modern industry. Factories and trains produced in the manufacture of wealth, has polluted America with its wastes. It is a physical desert that symbolizes the spiritual desolation, that a society based on money creates. Overlooking the valley, are the sightless eyes of T.J. Ecklburg, an advertisement on a billboard in which a character actually confuses as God. It represents a God who has been created by modern society to make money. It represents a God who no longer sees nor cares. The whole valley symbolizes a world whose inhabitants are so spiritually lost, that they worship money and wealth. The promise of happiness, hope, and freedom that America gave its first settlers, has been corrupted by the lies of greed, and the emptiness of a dream based on wealth.

Another important symbols in the novel is class and social standing. It is like a barrier for almost every character. East and West Eggs act as a symbol of this by its physical makeup. Tom and Daisy live on the East which is far more refined and consists of people with more money and a higher social status. East Egg also represents the “old money.”Nick and Gatsby are on the West, which is for people who don’t have any real standing, even if they have money. The West Egg represents the “new money.”The green light shines from the East Egg to the West Egg luring Gatsby towards what he has always wanted. And Daisy, the woman that Gatsby has always wanted but never gets, lives on East Egg. There is also a barrier of water between the two cities that keeps people like Daisy and Gatsby apart from one another and keeps them from reaching their goals and what they want in life.

The last symbol I want to mention is the moth. This image with vivid symbolized meaning was the insect-moth. In the former part of the chapter three, the author tried to describe the grand feast in Gatsby’s home, in the latter part of it, to depict the appearance of Gatsby,. This chapter begins with such descriptions: “There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights. In his-blue garden men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the starts.”(page 56). The insect-moth habitually takes actions at night, and likes to fly around the lights., wherever there is a light. It has very thin wings, the color of which is grey looking like bark. This gives such impression that it is not the concrete body without essence or content depending on sucking the liquid of plants. Moth, this insect image is very vivid and lifelike. So, small wonder that Fitsgerald used the moth as a symbol of blindness and parasitism .

The author showed his negative attitude to conduct of those men and girls on Gatsby’s feast through the moth. In the daylight, these people are out of sight, at night, they fly out from every direction, seeking their meals and chasing each other. When

the light is dimmed, they will abandon it. The features of moth show the intrinsic character of those guests in Gatsby’s feast. To go out on a spree and attend banquets every night is the typical way of life at that time and also is the reflection of the inner emptiness and a befuddled life of American youth in 1920’s. So,the symbolic meaning of moth is quite important in this novel.

To sum up, Fitsgerald is so creative and imaginative that he can be skillful enough to use these symbols to reveal the theme of this novel and the fate of the characters. He puts those symbols in great harmony with the theme which efficiently conveys his own atti-tudes and feelings. What’s more, the symbolic meaning of those images don’t’affect the vividness of the images themselves. On the contrary, the author suggests his feelings or ideas to the readers by using those objects .On the right way, these symbols function a lot as a means of representing figures, conveying feelings and making the theme standing out.

On Inevitability of Gatsby’s Tragedy I. Introduction Scott. Fitzgerald is a prominent novelist in the American literature, owned the title of the spokesman of the Jazz Age and the laurel of poet. From the contents and thoughts, the creative traits, his book the Great Gatsby is a real masterpiece of Fitzgerald, which made him get success in writing. As soon as it was published publicly in 1925, the Great Gatsby gained many critics’ affirmation and praise, becoming as one of the most excelle nt works in the 20th century. “The famous poet and critic Aerate said that the Great Gatsby took a great progress in American novels since Henry James.”(Donaldson, 1984: 283) In this novel, with a brief and serious style, the author vividly described a tragedy caused by American Dream, and successfully molded a suffered figure Gatsby. He was the author’s favorite character, in that they had many things in common such as many experiences and spiritual virtues that are different from the comprehension and chase to American life of common people. Gatsby owned marvelous genius, incomparable resolute romantic volition to his dream as well as his loyalty to his ideal, which won high praise of the author. The essay, on one hand, gives deep sympathy to Gatsby about his tragedy, on the other hand, it indicates that it is vain and dangerous to seek American Dream at that time. The paper is analyzing the inevitability of the hero Gatsby’s tragedy by examining the essence of Gatsby’s dream, the potential destructiveness in Gatsby’s characters and social-backgrounds that lead to Gatsby’s destruction. II. Description of Gatsby’s Dream 2.1 Origin of Gatsby’s Dream Gatsby’s dream originated from the American dream, and the so-called “American Dream”, in Am erican society, especially in the period of exploiting the New Continent, formed and developed a rather commonly attracting ideal. It has long history dating from the period of European emigrants exploiting the New Continent, and this dream owns tremendous enough connotations of American desire and hope to spirits and materials. Consequently, many people defined it as the synthesis of Wealthy Dream, Transcendent Dream and Love Dream.

the_great_gatsby(了不起的盖茨比)_英文介绍及赏析

The Great Gatsby F.Scott.Fitzgerald . Character List Daisy Buchanan - Nick’s cousin, and the woman Gatsby loves. As a young woman in Louisville before the war, Daisy was courted by a number of officers, including Gatsby. She fell in love with Gatsby and promised to wait for him. However, Daisy harbors a deep need to be loved, and when a wealthy, powerful young man named Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him, Daisy decided not to wait for Gatsby after all. Now a beautiful socialite, Daisy lives with Tom across from Gatsby in the fashionable East Egg district of Long Island. She is sardonic and somewhat cynical, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’s constant infidelity. Daisy Buchanan (In-Depth Analysis) Tom Buchanan - Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale. Powerfully built and hailing from a socially solid old family, Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard he demands from those around him. He has no moral qualms about his own extramarital affair with Myrtle, but when he begins to suspect Daisy and Gatsby of having an affair, he becomes outraged and forces a confrontation. Jordan Baker - Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel. A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered. Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest: she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the truth. Myrtle Wilson - Tom’s lover, whose lifeless husband George owns a run-down garage in the valley of ashes. Myrtle herself possesses a fierce vitality and desperately looks for a way to improve her situation. Unfortunately for her, she chooses Tom, who treats her as a mere object of his desire. Analysis of Major Characters Daisy Buchanan Partially based on Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, Daisy is a beautiful young woman from Louisville, Kentucky. She is Nick’s cousin and the object of Gatsby’s love. As a young debutante in Louisville, Daisy was extremely popular among the military officers stationed near her home, including Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lied about his background to Daisy, claiming to be from a wealthy family in order to convince her that he was worthy of her. Eventually, Gatsby won Daisy’s heart, and they made love before Gatsby left to fight in the war. Daisy promised to wait for Gatsby, but in 1919 she chose instead to marry Tom Buchanan, a young man from a solid, aristocratic family who could promise her a wealthy lifestyle and who had the support of her parents. After 1919, Gatsby dedicated himself to winning Daisy back, making her the single goal of all of his dreams and the main motivation behind his acquisition of immense wealth through criminal activity. To Gatsby, Daisy represents the paragon of perfection—she has the aura of charm, wealth, sophistication, grace, and aristocracy that he longed for as a child in North Dakota and that first attracted him to her. In reality, however, Daisy falls far short of Gatsby’s ideals. She is beautiful and charming, but also fickle, shallow, bored, and sardonic. Nick characterizes her as a careless person who smashes things up and then retreats behind her money. Daisy proves her real nature when she chooses Tom over Gatsby in Chapter VII, then allows Gatsby to take the blame for killing Myrtle Wilson even though she herself was driving
