Task 2

Peter Jennings: Finally this evening we are reminded of that ad for a bank, which says that to do international business successfully you got to know the local conditions. The advertising gurus of the world are constantly after that – one big idea which they can sell across countries and cultures, and it isn’t easy, Nike can tell you that. The world’s largest maker of sport shoes learned a very good lesson, in China. Here’s ABC’s Mark Lifky.

Mark Lifky: The people of China are passionate about the ancient practice of kung fu, a martial art developed centuries ago by the Buddhists monks of Shaolin Temple. They are also passionate about the modern game of basketball, especially with Chinese superstar Yao Ming in the NBA. So, if you are a giant sportswear company looking to aggressively expand in China, you’d probably jump at the idea of an add campaign to combine this with this, which is exactly what Nike did. They used Lebron James, the NBA’s youngest new star, in a cutting-edge commercial called “Chamber of Fear”, Lebron taking on a kung fu master, and a team of temptresses as

well. But when the ad began playing here, the response was not quite what Nike expected. Chinese sporting fans, still reveling in their recent Olympic glory, complained that the ad as insulting and disrespectful, that it ridiculed cherished symbols of Chinese culture. Others said it showed China as weak and incapable. And now, the Chinese government has banned the commercial, saying it violates TV regulations that require all advertisements to uphold national dignity and respect for the Motherland. In the country where Nike now spends $150 million dollars a year in advertising, it was quite a blow.

Mark Lifky: In its defense, Nike insists that it only attempted to send a positive message to the young people to be courageous and fear nothing. The problem is in the commercial. It’s only the Chinese characters that are being defeated. The Chamber of Fear is still to be shown in other Asian cities. But in Asia’s biggest market, it just wasn’t the slam dunk that Nike hoped it would be.

Task 4

Where I come from???

As the world gets smaller and the economy becomes more global people are choosing to live and work in other cultures. This inevitably leads to some forms of culture shock. When I was accepted to teach with teachers overseas, I was put through rigorous five-week training. They cover several aspects of teaching English as a second language, getting along with the teammate and living in a different culture. Some of my favorite sections were the ones they dealt with culture shock.

We laughed a lot at the different ways that we were told the nationals in our country will behave and the things we would experience. Even though I was given fair warning and I have lived in Hungary for three years now I still have a clutter of experiences and stories of culture shock from life over there.

Language is the first and most obvious thing that could cause culture shock. But I’ve learned some Hungarian and can usually find someone to translate important things. But it is the subtle things, the little things that build up and often lead to extreme culture shock. I am a little surprised whenever a Hungarian student or colleague inquires about the costs of something I own, for example, my laptop, my ipod or even a watch. “Was it expensive? How much was it?” You see, where I come from, that is just plain rude. What business is it of theirs? When I go to a restaurant and ask for water that only do they charge for it but there’re bubbles in it. “Oh, I forget about getting any drink with ice”. Where I come from, they bring you ice water as soon as you sit down. And sometimes beer in Hungary is cheaper than the water. What’s up with that? Oh! And I can’t believe it when my Hungarian colleagues almost brag about how the students cheat on exams. They laugh and comment among themselves about how clever the students are with cheating and that doesn’t’ seem to be much punishment when they do get cheating. Where I come from, students are drilled with honor codes and the value of earning the grades you get. I’ve also been yelled at by complete strangers but I accidentally bumped to them on the metro or round my shopping cart into theirs on the narrow aisle. Where I come from, most

people would just say “Excuse me” even it wasn’t my fault or just shoot their glare but no yelling. But you see I am not living where I come from. I made a choice to move to a different culture, I knew fair well that there existed differences in language, food and customs. I can complain and complain until days end but that won’t change my situation. I could easily become discouraged and depressed by the culture shock around me everyday. I have to remind myself that I am a guest in their country and that they would feel as much culture shock or more in my country. When I think about that, I find myself appreciating the differences rather than resenting them.

Task 5

Maybe or Maybe Not – Confidence and Uncertainty Every language has different cultural norms for expressing confidence and uncertainty. While a word or phrase meaning one thing in Chinese it can have the exact opposite meaning in English. Understanding the cultural differences can help you communicate more clearly in English and will avoid breakdown in communication and fault expectations.

For researchers, here are the most commonly misunderstood words and phrases often used by non-native English speakers, “maybe”, “possibly”, “probably”. When the English speakers says, “She can possibly get the project done in a week”, or says that “maybe she can probably meet you for dinner”, she’s pretty sure she can do it. When a non-native English speaker says “possibly” or “maybe”, he is usually trying to avoid saying no even though he knows he probably can’t make it. In this way both parties have different expectations which in turn lead to disappointment or frustration. “I think I can”, “maybe I can”, “I believe”. In western culture expressing confidence is more important than being in humble. Manager and clients must be assured that they can trust you so it’s always smart to use capable, self-assured English. If you say “I think I can do that” or “maybe I can take that” or “I believe this is the best answer”, you can come across something hesitant and insecure. How can you avoid this cross-cultural misinterpretation? Just be honest and direct.

Yeah, I can do that.

Sure, no problem.

If you aren’t up to the task or need more time to fix the problem, expect you to use the falling voice, say “I am afraid Saturday is too soon. It’s much better to be honest and direct. So everyone has the same expectation. And don’t worry, you won’t come across someone arrogant and conceited and you won’t offend anyone by saying “No”. You will, however. Sounds just like English speakers. Be confident and self-assured.
