Shanghai unveiled its mascot for the 2010 World Expo on Tuesday evening, 865 days before the six-month party kicks off.
The mascot, named Haibao, literally means "treasure of the world". The blue smiling cartoon figure has curly hair and is in the shape of Chinese character 人, or human beings. It was presented during a televised ceremony at the Shanghai Grand Stage in front of an audience of more than 9,000.
"Haibao is a jolly, confident and cute kid," said Shao Longtu, 62, CEO of the Jiumuchuansheng advertising company and head of the mascot design team. "Using a human being as a mascot reflects the spirit of human-orientation, while the color blue stands for water, sea, earth, life, dreams, the future and technology."
The mascot was selected from among 26,655 entries from 21 countries and regions.
In addition, the emblem for the expo resembled the Chinese character SHI, or world. "The mascot is a perfect match for the emblem. It also deepens the expo theme 'Better city, better life', " Shao said.
To 54-year-old Liu Jinfan, the mascot was beyond her expectation. "I didn't expect it to be human being, but I like the idea. To host the expo and develop the economy, the final goal is the same -- to improve people's lives."
The expo, which runs May 1 to October 31, 2010, was expected to draw 70 million visitors, an average of 400,000 a day.
It was the first time for the event to be held in a developing country since the inaugural fair in London in 1851. Shanghai won its bid for the expo in December 2002.

China's figure skating couple Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo finally realized their Olympic dream, dancing to gold in the figure skating with a nearly flawless routine.
The husband and wife team who came out of retirement in quest of Olympic glory, broke Russia's stranglehold on the Games figure skating pairs event on Monday with a performance worthy of 18 years' hard work together.
After finishing top in the short program, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo looked confident to start their free skating routine.
Under the song of "Adagio" by Italian composer Albinon Tommaso, the three-time world champions put on a breathtaking performance.

第 哲理和教育意义。从阅卷的情况看,同学们做题不是很好。出错较多的题有: 35,36,38,39,40,41,44小题。 IV 、阅读理解,为 3 篇文章 15 道选择题,重点通过阅读文章考查考生的理解和分析问题的能力。三篇文章都不难,同学们做得情况还可以。对于细节考查题很多学生只要认真阅读文章都能在文章中找到答案而得分。但是学生在概括文章主旨大意,段落大意和文章内涵方面较差,这表明学生并没有读懂文章,而导致失分严重。出错较多的题有: 49,50,53,55,58,60等小题,因此在以后的教学中要提醒同学们一定要认真审题和阅读文章。 VII 、补全对话,失分严重,主要原因在于学生不能把所学知识应用于生活实际,语言表达能力差,语句不通顺,语句表达不符合英语习惯。76 小题,学生错写Could you please tell me where is the bookstore ? 不知道用陈述句语序 , 78 小题和7 9 小题特殊疑问词用错 VIII 、书面表达,主要存在以下问题:学生较死板硬套,只会把所背范文原本照旧写出,不会戴帽,不会过渡,不会合理搭配。学生不会把表格中的提示信息利用起来,漏写或纯粹不用。语法错误,单词拼写错误,汉语式英语表达,书写潦草。 三、对今后教学工作的建议
