Kate: Well, nowadays there seen to be many natural disasters.

Jack: For example, firestorms occur here and there, now and then.

K: Firestorms are a pretty interesting phenomenon. They generate so much heat that they create their own weather. Nothing you can co about it.

J: Once a fire develops into a firestorm, you simply can’t put an end to it. Some people think we shouldn’t try.

K: you mean, just let the forests burn? How can we watch people’s homes on fire?

J: Some experts argue that forest fires are part of nature, and that we shouldn’t try to interfere. Of course, we should save homes and lives.

K: It seems wrong to allow fines to burn up the good timber. What a waste that would be.

J: But the fire can clean up the debris and creating new kinds of growth.

K: I admit there’s something in what you said, but I still think it’s wrong to not put out forest fires.

6: Tim and Ginger are talking about the relationship between superstition and luck, including good and bad luck. Each gives two or more examples such as’’wearing a ring as a talisman’’, ’’saying’touch wood’for good luck’’, ’’worrying about a broken mirror’’, and ‘’worrying about a black cat running across one’s path.’’Finally they both come to the conclusion that our fate is linked to our attitude rather than to our superstitions.

Chris: It's strange that so many people are superstitious. There must be some relationship between superstitions and real life.

Susan: You know, Richard Wiseman, a British psychologist researched the relationship between superstition and luck.

Chris: What did he find? Most people would be interested. At least I would

Susan: He polled 1000 people and found that people who believe themselves to be lucky tend to go for positive superstitions .They may wear a ring as a talisman

or often say, touch wood for good luck.

Chris: Then, what about the unlucky people? Do you mean if they think? They ate unlucky, they tend to believe in superstitions abut bad luck.

Susan: Yeah. They worry a lot about a broken mirror, a black cat running across their path, and so on.

Chris: So what is his point?

Susan: His point is that people make their own luck by their attitude to life. So, 49 percent of lucky people regularly cross their fingers, compared to 30 percent

of unlucky people. And only 18 percent of lucky people are anxious if they

break a mirror.

Chris: So, our fate is linked to our attitude rather than to our superstitions.

Susan: I think that is what he is suggesting.

Chris: This research seems too complicates. If I were a psychologist, I would conduct

a survey to find whether 13 really is an unlucky number. If there were traffic

accidents or murders on the 13th than on other days, then we have to believe in

superstitions. Susan: What if there were not?

Chris: Then I would not be superstitious.

Susan: What a brilliant idea! I never expected you to be as wise as Solomon.

Chris: Well as long as you don't think I'm a fool.

7: David suggests some forms of recreation, but Emma rejects all of them, and finally suggests something to do. You may refer to the following tips, though you are not limited to them.

Forms of recreation requiring a high level of physical activities:

Playing football,basketball,badminton,tennis.table tennis.etc.

Bodybuilding,surfing,etc

Sedentary activities:

Watching football, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, etc.

Going to the cinema/theater/concert hall

Watching TV, playing computer games,etc.

Amy: Would you like to go to see a movie tonight, say, The Lord of the Rings?

Bill: Thanks for asking, but there‘s too much violence in those blockbusters.

Amy: Then, let's go roller-skating.

Bill: I don’t really like to know that I’m not so young any more. You know, my knees ache terribly.

Amy: I' m sorry to hear that. Hey, let’s go to see a country singer tonight?

Bill: No. I’m not really in the mood.

Amy: Well, would you like to do anything?

Bill: Sure, let’s stay home and watch TV.

Amy: Is there anything worth watching tonight

Bill: Let me look at the TV Guide first. Well, Survivor’s on Channel 3 at 7:30.

Amy: If I remember correctly, there’s a documentary about animals on another channel.

Bill: Yes, on Channel 10. Do you want to watch it?

Amy: Do you mind if we watch it?

Bill: Well. I really wanted to watch the Rocket game tonight

Stating the rapid development of the cloning technology

Mentioning parents may want to clone a dead child

Mentioning adults who can’t give birth to a child

Stating the possibility to produce a physically strong child

Zoe

Expressing doubt(about human cloning)

Expressing doubt(about aging fast)

Expressing doubt(about abnormal size)

Expressing doubt(about damaging the mind)

Suggesting no prohibition of the cloning of human organs

Susan: After the cloning of Dolly the sheep, I think human cloning is next.

John: Whoa. I have some reservations about it. There are still many scientific problems to solve before human cloning starts.

Susan: There’s an easier way. The Clon aid Company says they have cloned humans.

John: Oh, my God! These guys claim aliens from another planet taught them human cloning.

Susan: A woman gave them half a million dollars to clone her dead daughter.

John: Clearly that woman does not know much about cloning. How risky it is!

Susan: I know it‘s inefficient. It took 276 tries to produce Dolly. But why is it risky?

John: Cloned animals grow abnormally large and age unnaturally fast.

Susan: In other words, that woman may not be happy with her cloned daughter.

John: Then there are the emotions. No one knows if cloning damages the mind.

Susan: Do you think the cloning of humans should be forbidden by law?

John: To my mind, the cloning of human organs should not be prohibited. It may help solve medical problems.

Susan: I see your point: cloning should be regulated if it‘s to benefit humanity.

9: Jack and Mary are talking about a Chinese foreign trade company’s exports. Last year its export volume increased compared with the previous year, but this year it has decreased compared with the corresponding period of last year.

Susan: Hey, John!

John: Hey! Look at this headline! China‘s foreign trade should reach $1 trillion this year!

Susan: Are you sure the figure is correct? How can they keep up such rapid growth for so many years running?

John: A senior official of the Ministry of Commerce said so in Beijing Wednesday.

Susan: As far as I kno w, China‘s foreign trade volume was already $851.2 billion last year, a 37.1 percent jump over the previous year. That volume ranked fourth in

the world, following only the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Susan: But the Chinese are working miracles. In the first half of this year, foreign

Trade reached $523 billion, up 39.1 percent over last year.

John: I wonder how it can grow so fast.

Susan: The U.S. economy has been very good.

Booming consumption has created opportunities for China‘s exports.

Susan: Is that the only one reason China‘s exports have increased? No other factors?

John: China encourages exports. Exporters can get rebates from the customs

department.

Susan: What‘s happening with Chinese imports?

John: Well, China has met her commitments to the World Trade Organization since she joined two and half years ago. She has gradually been decreasing tariffs and

strengthening intellectual property rights. She has opened her doors to the

outside world wider. All these changes have led to an increase in her imports.

Susan: You seem to be looking at China through rose-colored glasses.

John: China is not without her problems. Some of her state-owned industries have only a blunt competitive edge. They have a weak anti-risk capability. Some

industries still depend on trade protectionism.

Susan: John, I really admire your wide knowledge. I think you‘ll be in line for Nobel Prize in Economics some day.

John: You‘re just pulling my leg again.

10: Bill is not experienced in investing in the stock market and seeks Jack’s suggestions.

Knowing that Bill wants to sell his stock, BCD, which has dropped more than 50 cents a share, Jack tells Bill that the market is cyclical and advises him to keep it. Seeing that Bill is eager to make money in a short time, Jack suggests he buy XYZ stock.
