ON Thursday night, I sat at my desk, preparing a speech I had to give on Friday, in Speech Class. I looked at the clock: almost midnight. Well, I'd better get to bed unless I wanted to fall asleep doing my speech.

Kenji’s sister Ann was at the kitchen table. The table was covered with newspapers. Small bowls of paint were spread across the newspapers. Painted fans were drying on the chairs beside Ann. “What are you doing?” Kenji asked. Ann held up a plain white fan that she had just started to work on. ORLANDO, FLORIDA—Is it hard for you to get up early and get ready for classes?Some students at Winter Park High School just roll out of bed in their pajamas(睡衣) and go to class in their own bedrooms. Of course, their teachers and classmates do not see them because all their class work is on the computer.

The Florida high school, the state’s only on–line school, has 250 students who are taking classes at home by computer. “I’m a lot more comfortable at home,” says Luke Levesque, a 16-year-old boy who is taking a computer class on-line. He thinks the school’s computer lab is so noisy that he can’t study well. “Home is much better,” he says.

Students in this first on-line program take classes in Algebra(代数), American government, chemistry, computer, economics, and Web-page design. They also have to go to a regular school to attend other classes.

When a student is ready to begin a class, he or she turns on the computer, reads the teacher’s instructions, and begins working on the lesson for the day. What happens if a student has a question for the teacher? Or the teacher wants to say something about the work a student is doing? The student and the teacher talk to each other every day through e-mail or he or she calls the teacher. For example, when Luke opened his daily e-mail from the teacher, it contained (包含) her instructions for the day’s computer lesson. When he finished, he e-mailed the work back to her for grading.

Is it easy for students to cheat on tests when they’re working at home? The teachers have already thought about this. They make students take their final exams in person in the classroom.

“Y ou see most of the same things on-line that you see in a regular classroom,” says teacher Linda Hayes. “Y ou get to know the students on-line.”

If this first on-line program goes well, in three years Florida high school students will be able to take all their classes by computer. When that happens, students will be able to get their high school diplomas (毕业证书) without having to set foot in a classroom.

“I feel wonderful,” says Samantha Larson, 18 from the US, after climbing Mount Qomolangma on May 17, 2007. It is the highest place on the Earth.

The climb made Samantha the youngest foreigner to climb the world’s greatest peak. A 15-year-old Sherpa girl from Nepal was the youngest ever to climb the mountain.

Samantha reached the top of the 8,848-meter mountain with her father.

“I was really happy to be there and I was happy to be going down too,” Samantha says.

She says Mount Qomolangma was “much harder, longer and higher than other mnountain she has climbed.

Samantha has climbed the highest peaks in the world with her father. These include Mount Kilimanjaro (乞力马扎罗山) in Africa when she was 12.

Samantha is the youngest person to conquer (征服) all the seven highest peaks of the seven continents(大洲). She broke a 2006 record set by young British man Rhys Miles Jones, 20 when he did it. “There were a lot of difficult moments. It was a long trip,” she says. “It was one big challenge(挑战). I never gave up hope. Deep down I knew I would make it.”

On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay first conquered Mount Qomolangma. Since then about 2,000 climbers have made it to the top of the mountain.
