I first began experiencing worries and depression(沮丧)at the age of 14,

after being bullied(欺凌)at school for years. While at first worries and

depression would come and go, it finally became a part of my life.

In order to solve the problem, I tried everything from when I was in college to graduate school: mood-changing medicine, special teas, things I

read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Sadly, I didn't feel any

better.

But one afternoon, I saw an article in a magazine. It talked about how dogs were able to help people with worries and depression. The next day, I decided to get a dog – a corgi(柯基犬).

When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home, I didn't realize how much he would change my life. It didn't happen right away, however.

Once the "puppy excitement" went away, my worries and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feelings again. I didn't want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and give up. That's when I saw Buddy.

Buddy started jumping all over me, licking(舔)my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, "There's no time to be sad, the world is amazing!" And for the first time in my life, on a day when my worries and depression were strong, I got out of bed. I put on my winter clothes and went for a walk in the snow with my new friend. I realized at that moment, walking down the street in winter, my life waschanging. I really was a new person. This

was my new beginning.

It's been more than a year since that day, and I've never spent another morning unable to get out of bed. I've not cried myself to sleep or spent my days stuck with fear and sadness. Sure, I still have days when I feel sad or worried. But with Buddy by my side, I've finally learned how to manage these feelings.

Saturday morning was bright and fresh. There was a song in every heart, a cheer on every face, and a spring in every step.

Few people refuse to look at pictures of cute animals.

Take Sally chicken as an example. The chicken with a yellow

body and a flat mouth always looks lovely, which makes it

popular on the Internet. Seeing her cute picture cheers people

up. But there's another advantage of cute animals.

New research has found that looking at pictures of cute animals can also help us concentrate(聚精会神)better.

The study comes from researchers at Hiroshima University in Japan. They invited 132 university students to take part in a series of experiments.

In one experiment, students played a game in which they had to pick up small objects from a hole without touching the sides. In another experiment, students were asked to find a given number from a list of numbers quickly.

In both experiments, they did the given tasks twice – before and after looking at pictures of either kittens (baby cats) and puppies (baby dogs), or adult cats and dogs.

Researchers were surprised to find that in both cases students who were shown cute baby animal pictures made fewer mistakes.

But, baby animals look both "cuter"and "more pleasant" than adult animals. Some people may ask whether the test difference came from their being "pleasant"?

To find the answer, the researchers chose some food pictures which looked pleasant but not cute, and gave them to a third group of students. But viewing the foods did not make the students do any better in the number test.

This finding shows that viewing cute pictures makes participants(参与者)behave more deliberately and do tasks with greater care.

The "power of cuteness" may be of great use in everyday life.

Think about situations in which people need to act carefully: driving, office work and exams.
