By 2055, about 40 percent of the population in Japan will be over 65 years old. Thus Japanese scientists hope that robots will be the answer to the serious question-what to do with an ageing population(人口).

Today, some robots are already cleaning floors in about 10 buildings around the country, including a skyscraper (摩天大楼) in central Tokyo. The robots work at night after office workers have gone home. They even take the lift to move from one floor to another.

However, such robots are still rare(稀少的) in Japan. Japanese scientists are trying to build robots smart enough to meet the needs of the elderly(老人) in the country.

As Japan's population grows older and its workers are getting fewer, scientists say new types of robots will play an important part in society because there won't be enough people to do some jobs.

In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining (请客) at home. They often invite friends for a meal, a party or just for coffee and conversation.

Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their homes: “Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturda y night?” “Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”

To answer an invitation, either say thank you and accept or say you are sorry and give an excuse. “Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry. I’ve tickets for a movie.”

Sometimes, however, people in the west use expressions (语句) that sound like invitation but which are not real invitation. For example, “Please come over for a drink sometime.” “Why not get together for a party sometime?” or “Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?” They are really polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention(提到、涉及) a certain time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be

Robots are everywhere. They have been into the mountains, into the oceans, and even into space! It's not hard to think of the future when robots will do everything for people.

In the future, robots might look, talk and walk like people. Some scientists say you may even have robot friends in a few years' time! But for this, robots must be able to think and have emotions(情感).

Scientists can make robots that can act like animals. Professor Ayanna Luc Steels from France is one of them. He is the man behind Sony's "Aibo", a robot dog. When you cough or sneeze, please turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. Afterwards, you should say, "Excuse me." This is a rule I set for my students.

It is so simple, but many kids have never been told to do this. In fact, I notice adults cough and sneeze in public without putting a hand over the mouth. I hate travelling by underground in New York during cold and flu season, because it is certain that someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on my neck.

One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will pass those germs(病菌) along to everything and everyone they touch.

In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old story. It says that when you sneeze, evil spirits will jump into your body. If you don't cover your mouth, the spirits will enter. But if you cover your mouth, you will keep them out. We say "God bless you!" when someone sneezes, and in Germany you should say "Gesundheit." That means "Good health to you." Both expressions are said just in case you don't cover your mouth in time and the spirits are able to enter your body. The kids love finding out the origins(起源) of these expressions and they are encouraged to put the advice to use more often.

Space vegetables are grown from seeds(种子)that have been taken to space and brought back to the earth. The seeds are affected by the radiation(辐射)and low gravity in space. When they are brought back to the earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger and healthier than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could make us get sick because of the radiation in space. However, people should not be frightened because space vegetables are very healthy.

Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.

Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn't remember where she'd put them.

Perhaps you've had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven't realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you'll just accept that, the following will show you how.

First, relax. If you are over worried about remembering something, you'll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won't remember things. When you forget something, don't follow up with sayings like“Oh,my God ! I always forget things !” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.

But relaxing isn't enough. To improve your memory, you'll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities(机会)to exercise your memory. For example,if you're learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.

If you don't take notice of things actively, you won't remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don't just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you're putting them.

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room has a television set and a video, and your kitchen has a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers are filled with almost three times-as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holidays abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.

Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Getting material success begin to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hour work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for families. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.

Six per cent of workers in Britain made the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted are Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs(郊区), leaving their two children with a nanny (保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn't get home until eight or nine o'clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. "I always wanted to have a farm here," says Daniel, "and it took us almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It took us some time to get used to it, but it's worth doing it. We have to think twice now before spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it has made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier. "

Liz, however, is not quite sure. "I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I'm not really a country girl, but I suppose I'm gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all." ( )1. What do the first two paragraphs tell us?

“Come, Darcy,”said he. “I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.”

“I certainly shall not. You know how I hate it, unless I am particularly familiar (熟悉的) with my partner. Your sisters are engaged (订婚), and there is not another woman in the room who it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.”

“I would not be so hard to please as you do,” cried Mr Bingley, “Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life as I have this evening; and there are several of them you see uncommonly pretty!”

“You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,” said Mr Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Benne.

When he was a teenager, Hunter Adams was very unhappy and he spent many years in a special hospital for people with mental(心理的)health problems.

When he left the hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, USA. But when he was there, he did things in a different way. For example, he didn't like the doctor's white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients and he tried to make them laugh.
