Analysis of the Main Characteristics of The
Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a children’s novel written by Lyman Frank Baum. The main storyline is about the process of a girl and her three companions Scarecrow, Tin woodman, Lion finding the grate wizard named Oz. Most of the story happens on a road paved with yellow brick in the Land of Oz. The story is simple, but the plot is attractive and the language is fluent.
The writer Lyman Frank Baum was an American author, though it wasn’t his only occupation. He also has been a newspaper editor, film producer. Lyman Frank Baum was his American fairy tales including the wonder without the horrors. Then in 1900, he published The Wizard of Oz. The name of “Oz” came from a file drawer labeled “O-Z”. The book ranked as the best seller after its issue. With the grate success of this novel, Baum wrote another thirteen sequels based on the places and characters of the Oz. Also the novel The Wizard of Oz was adapted for film and stage, and both of them received good results.
The yellow brick road is acted as the thread of the adventure. The main story takes places on this road. The main character was a girl named Dorothy, who lived on a farm with her uncle and aunt. Her life seemed humdrum and all things surrounded her were gray. Until one day, an emergent cyclone brought her and her dog to a beautiful land called Oz. Although, this land was more colorful than her uncle’s farm, she was still eager for home. Looking forward the opportunity of the way home.
Dorothy is a brave and kind-hearted girl. She killed the two bad witches in Oz, she encourages and helps the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion to go to the Emerald City to find the Wizard and get what they want. She solved problems when they met difficulties. It’s really not easy for such a little girl. It impressed me most was that when Toto was endangered she rushed forward and slapped the Lion upon his nose as hard as she could. While she cried out: Don't you dare to bite a poor little dog!
The Scarecrow is absolutely cleaver who understands and learns things quickly, also he can think. At the same time he is very considerable for he often brought Dorothy some fruit from a tree by which she ate for her dinner. In the story , when suddenly they came to another gulf across the road which is so broad and deep that the lion knew at once he could not leap across it. After serious thought the Scarecrow said: here is a great tree, standing close to the ditch. If the Tin Woodman can chop it down, so that it will fall to the other side, we can walk across easily. So I have to say: One would almost suspect you had brains in your head, instead of straw.
The Tin woodman has a kind heart, he laughs, he cries, he loves, he feels sorry for people even he tread an ant. When he saw that a beast chase a little gray field mouse, and although he had no heart he knew it was wrong for the Wildcat to try to kill such a pretty ,harmless creature.
The Cowardly Lion is really brave; he did a lot of brave things. Although he was certainly afraid by the Kalidahs, he turned to face them, and then he gave so loud and terrible a roar that Dorothy screamed and Scarecrow fell over backward, while even the fierce beasts stopped short and looked at him in surprise. He carried the friends to go across the river, and he wanted to find some food for his friends and so on.
There is a man have to mention called Oz, he is a witch with strong wizardry. He is very terrible, but is respected admired by the people in the city. Dorothy and his companions have found his secret, know that he's just an ordinary man, but he let Dorothy's companions get a spiritual satisfaction. Finally, although he did not ride with hydrogen balloons off with Dorothy, but he then do not have life in deception and soul to be free.
At the end of the story, they all got what they expected. But it was not Oz who gave them brain, heart and courage. Actually, they achieved these things by themselves. And their behaviors during the adventure represented the predominant theme of The Wizard of Oz is self-sufficiency. We can feel the love between friends. The scarecrow, tin woodman, cowardly lion all sought external magic to give them qualities they already possessed but failed to recognize. Just in our lives, we often want to get something, but these things mostly are deep in you. Maybe after you experience different things, you will achieve these qualities. Furthermore, something can never get from others, such as intelligence, love and courage. People can only help you get these easier and taking less time. Only your endeavor can make you better. If you have made great efforts, I believe you can do it.
