Lesso n93 A no ble gift 崇高的礼物 One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statue of Liberty , was presented to the United States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The great statue, which was designed by the sculptor Augu ste Bartho ldi, too ten y ears to complete. The actual figure was made of copper supported by a metal framework which had been especially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could be transported to th e United States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be bu ilt. The site chosen was an island at the entrance of New York Harbour. By 1884, a statue wh ich was 151 feet tall, had been erected in Paris. The following y ear, it was tak en to pieces and sent to America. By the end of October 1886, the statue had been pu t together again and it was officially presented to the American people by Bartholdi. Ever since then, the great monument has been a sy mbol of liberty for the millions of peop le who have passed through New Yor Harbour to mak e their h omes in America. Lesso n96 The dea d return 亡灵返乡 A Festival for the Dead is held o nce a y ear in Japan. This festival is a cheerful occasion, for on this day , the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welco med by the living. As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey , food is laid out for them. Specially -made lanterns are hung outside each house to help the dead to fin d their way. All nig ht lo ng, peop le dance and sing. In the early morning, the food that had been laid out for the dead is thrown into a river or into the sea as it is con sidered unluc for any one living to eat it. In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the streets the nig ht before, are placed into the water when the festival is over. Tho usands of lanterns slow ly drift out to sea guid ing the dead on their return journey to the other world. This is a movin g spectacle, for crowds of people stand o n the sh ore watching the lan terns drifting away until they can be seen no more.

fish was caught near Madagascar. A small fishin g-boat was carried miles out to sea by the powerful fish as it pu lled on the line. Realizin g that this was no ord inary fish, the fisherman made every effort not to damage it in any way. When it was eventually brought to shore, it was fou nd to be over thirteen f eet long. It had a head lik e a horse, big blue ey es, shinin g silver sk in, and a bright red tail, T he fish, wh ich has since been sent to a museum where it is being examined by a scientist, is called an oarfish. Such creatures have rarely been seen alive by man as they live at a depth of six hu ndred feet. The same policeman was just walk in g slow ly past the entrance, when Crawley ask ed the same questio n. Thoug h a little su spiciou s this time, the po liceman gave him the same answer. The day after, Crawley went to the house once more and ask ed exactly the same question. Th is time, the policeman lost h is temper.' The stu dents are going to tak e the test in two day s' time. Even so, people are going to find it difficult to get to wor But so far, the pub lic has expressed its gratitude to the students in letters to the Press. Only one or two peop le have objected that the students w ill drive too fast! Lesson85 Never too old to learn 活到老学到老 I have just received a letter from my old school informing me that my former head- master, Mr Regmald Page, will be retiring next wee . Pupils of the scho ol, o ld and new, w ill be sending him a present to mark the occasion. A ll those who have contributed towards the g ift will sign their names in a large album which

will be sent to the headmaster's home. We shall all remember Mr Pag e for his patience and understandin g and for the ind ly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwilling ly to schoo l. A great many former pupils will be attend ing a farewell din ner in h is ho nour next Thursday. It is a curious co incidence that the day before his retirement, Mr Page will have been teaching for a total of forty y ears. After he has retired, he will devote h imself to gardenin g. For him, this w ill be an entirely new hobby. But this does no t matter, for, as he has often remark ed, one is never too old to learn. Lesson94 Fut ure cha mpio ns 未来的冠军 Experiments have proved that children can be in structed in swimming at a very earl age. At a special swimming pool in Los A ngeles, children become expert at holding their breath under water even before they can walk . Babies of two month s old do no t appear to be reluctant to enter the water, It is no t lo ng before they are so accustomed to swimming that they can pick up weights from the floor of the poo l. A game that is very popular with these y oung swimmers is the underwater tricy cle race. Tricycles are lined up on the floor of the poo l seven feet under water. The children compete against each other to reach the other end of the po ol. Many pedal their tricy cles, but most of them prefer to push or drag them. Some children can cover the who le length of the po ol withou t coming up for breath even once. Whether they will ever become future Oly mpic champions, only time will tell. Meanwhile, they should encourage those among us wh o cannot swim five y ards before they are gasping for air. The Ambassador's wife went on ask ing questions, when she sud denly noticed a big h ole in her hu sband's hat. 'And how can y ou e xplain that ?' she ask ed. 'Oh, that,' said the Ambassador.

Lesson85 Never too old to learn 活到老学到老 I have just received a letter from my old school informing me that my former head- master, Mr Regmald Page, will be retiring next wee . Pupils of the scho ol, o ld and new, w ill be sending him a present to mark the occasion.
