第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)

第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)

阅读下列短文,从梅题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Given the recent interest in green buildings in the media, let's think differently. Instead of focusing on increasing the supply of energy, what if we focus on reducing demand?

Can we start with ending the open-door practice of street-front shops? While cool air from these shops is refreshing to walkers, it carries a cost. Energy is used in the air conditioning process.

So it must be possible to look for changes to encourage more energy-saving designs. For instance, if we fix ceiling fans, air-conditioning homes could surely be avoided for part of the year. Ceiling fans(吊扇)will use far less energy if ceiling fans are fixed.

In homes built under the small-house policy in New Territories, the ceiling may be too low for ceiling fans. If the 9-meter building height rules were relaxed, ceiling fans could be fixed to reduce energy use. Present thinking in sustainable(可持续的)building design and operation needs integrated(协调统一的)design. that is, bring together all parties to create a building with better performance that achieves energy reduction.

For integrated design to succeed, all parties must come together and think beyond each person's circle of influence. Better solutions are impossible to avoid with integrated design. Buildings would no longer be engineered after the basic architecture(建筑)was built. Positive project outcomes may include reduced air-conditioning load, reduced power use for electric lighting. and a reduction in the amount of materials used.

We need to ask if we are ready to look beyond our own small circles and seek an improved approach to building design. By that I mean an integrated design resulting in more environmental buildings.

21. What's the author's attitude towards the open-door practice of the street shops?

A. Supportive.

B. Optimistic.

C. Disapproving.

D. Uncaring.

22. Why does the author suggest fixing ceiling fans?

A. To help reduce energy use.

B. To follow an old practice.

C. To completely replace air conditioners.

D. To help cut down on daily costs.

23. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Waste less, live better

B. Green buildings call for integrated design

C. How to reduce the energy cost

D. Goodbye, air conditioning

B

Russia is planning on making regular launches to the International Space Station (ISS) for wealthy tourists willing to pay top dollar for a trip to space. The new package also includes spacewalks. a first for space tourism. If all that sounds very exciting, wait until you hear the price tag-as much as$100 million a person.

Vladimir Solntsev, CEO of Russian space company Energia, broke the news that his company wants to serve a market that's eager to travel and enjoy life in space. Tourists will be able

to "go out on a spacewalk and make a film.” he said.

Energia is working on a new module called NEM-2 which will be able to carry four to six people. It's a luxurious place to live by astronaut's standards or anything they've been used to up until now. Solntsev says the module will be fitted with comfortable cabins, two toilets, and Internet access. He gave a rough launch date for 2019, adding that American aerospace giant Boeing expressed interest to become a partner.

The Russian CEO estimates it will send five to six tourists to space a year, with each trip lasting up to 10 days at the International Space Station.

The first space tourist was Dennis A. Tito, a California multimillionaire(大富豪), who shelved$20 million for a ride and spent eight days in the International Space Station with two astronauts in 2001. Guy Laliberte, the founder of Canada's Cirque du Soled, paid more than $35 million for 12 days at the ISS in 2009. In total, 7 space tourists have made 8 space flights.

Some of you might think there's no chance you'll ever get to space-not with these prices. But

that's the thing-these prices won't stay this shockingly high forever. Not too long ago, owning a car was also expensive, so was a ride on an airplane. Innovations(创新)like reusable rockets and new capsule designs mean that someday. a trip to space will be within the reach of those with more modest fortunes.

A. Starring in a film with Boeing.

B. Going for a spacewalk.

C. Making friends with wealthy tourists.

D. Paying top dollar.

25. What does "luxurious" probably mean in paragraph 3?

A. Comfortable and expensive.

B. Spacious but uncomfortable.

C. Economical and practical.

D. Narrow and small.

26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. No money, no spacewalk.

B. Owning an automobile is out of reach for ordinary people.

C. The price of going to space will decrease in the near future.

D. Social development makes it possible for us to go to space.

C

After I decided on an early retirement(退休),I searched for volunteer opportunities online and found the famous organization Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA),which is a nonprofit(非盈利的)to support court-appointed lawyers for abused(虐待)or neglected children. Their goal is to give children a safe and healthy environment. A CASA's role is to gather information and make suggestions to the judge in the best interest of the child. My personal interests include a strong desire to help those who cannot help or speak for themselves, so this is right for me.

In order to become a CASA, I was required to complete 40 hours of training. After a careful background check, my application was finally approved. I started on my case. At first, I was a little

apprehensive, although I had excellent training. Would I ask the wrong questions? Are children going to understand me? Would parents welcome my help? To my surprise, I quickly established a good relationship with my assigned children and families.

Since these children have experienced violence or neglect(疏于照顾),simply arranging medical care or just spending time with them has the power to make a huge difference. I've had so much fun with these kids-riding bikes, going for walks, teaching them how to swim, or taking part in in water balloon fights-you name it. With all this fun, sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I'm volunteering for a greater purpose.

I am struck by the reality that these children were simply born into or raised in the conditions that were completely beyond their control. Though no fault of their own, they found themselves at risk, having been neglected, deserted, or even physically or emotionally abused. They are paying the price for someone else's choices. And their needs are greatest.

The late Muhammad Ali once said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth. I feel so grateful for spending my retirement playing a positive role in a child's life. Being a CASA and helping these children is so pleasant and powerful that I feel like I've paid rent on a luxury villa!"

27. Why did the author want to join the CASA instead of other nonprofits?

A. She decided on an early retirement.

B. CASA's purpose could match her interests.

C. She was good at communicating with children.

D. CASA was the most famous nonprofit in her community.

28. Which of the following best explains "apprehensive" underlined in paragraph 2?

A. Enthusiastic.

B. Comfortable.

C. Fearless.

D. Anxious.

29. Why did simply keeping these children company have a positive effect on them?

A. These children had a good relationship with volunteers.

B. These children were paying the price for their own choices.

C. These children were badly treated or neglected by their families.

D. These children had lots of fun riding bikes and going for walks.

30. What made the author feel grateful to be a CASA?

A. She had to pay for her room on Earth.

B. She was able to pay rent on an expensive house.

C. She played a positive role in educating parents.

D. She spent her retirement in a meaningful way.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Learning a new language can be difficult, and there is no magical way to go about it. 31

Know your learning style. This is the single most important thing you need to know when starting to learn a language. 32 You will need to figure out if you learn best through repetition, through writing down the words or through listening to a native speaker.

Learn pronunciation. 33 Just ask a Polish person how to pronounce the letters "cz". It will help to learn IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet, as most dictionaries use it. Besides, the Foreign Service Institute offers free online language learning materials, which include audio recordings which help with learning pronunciation.

34 This is probably the most important part of the language besides the vocabulary. "Paul want Mary go store" may communicate an idea, but it is not at all correct English. If you do not pay attention to grammar, you can sound equally incomprehensible in another language.

Memorize 30 words and phrases each day. Within 90 days this means you will have memorized about 80% of the language. Memorization is half the battle and there are many different ways to memorize.

Practice the alphabet. Especially if you are learning a language which operates on a different alphabetical system, you will need to know what the letters look like and how they operate. 35 In doing so, your brain will have an easy path to remembering the letter and the sound that goes with it.

A. Start with the most common words.

B. Pay attention to the grammar.

C. Try associating images with each letter and sound.

D. Therefore, there are really no secrets or shortcuts(捷径).

E. However, with certain techniques you will be fluent in no time.

F. Everyone learns differently, especially when it comes to language.

G. Even if a language has the same alphabet as yours, the pronunciation is not always the same.
