On a cold winter Sunday, the little man came up to me as I was about to enter the telephone box and asked me whether I had a match.

“I'm sorry,”I said. “I don't smoke,so I haven't any. You'd better ask someone else. ”

He looked rather disappointed, hesitated, and then turned away. I watched him walk slowly down the street before I picked up the telephone directory to look up the number I meant to dial.

I'm not used to a public call box,so,at my first attempt to get through, the warning pips( 嘟嘟声) had stopped before I realized I had to insert a coin.

When I was at last able to speak,I was told that the person whom I urgently wanted to give a message to had just that minute gone out. Swearing slightly under my breath,I got out of the box and came face to face with the little man. As he raised his hat again,I could see he was quite bald,a thin line, resembling a dueling( 决斗) scar, crossed one check.

“Excuse my troubling you again.” he said nervously.“May I walk along with you a little way?

I must tell you the truth. I need help desperately. ”

He had an unusually deep voice which suggested a strange combination of shyness and self- confidence. I was conscious of a fairly strong foreign accent and I wondered what country he had actually come from. I said that I had to catch a train in twenty minutes' time, but that he might accompany me to the station.

“I'm going to shock you,”he said suddenly, after a moment's silence. “Can you lend me five pounds? I have no money at all.”I have come across many strange characters during my life and plenty of people have tried to borrow money from me. I have generally managed to avoid lending them any. But,perhaps because of the very directness of his appeal,I somehow had the impression that his need might be desperately urgent.

“I'm sorry,”Ireplied,“I'm afraid I can't lend you anything,as I'm not in the habit of carrying much money about with me. Don't you think the police might be the best people to ask for help?”He hesitated,“I dare not go to the police,” he said quietly. “If I do go, they will have to send me home. That's what I'm afraid of. I don't know what to do. ”

He shook his head rather sadly, raised his hat and left me. I caught my train and soon forgot the incident.

It was three weeks later that I happened to glance at an old evening paper and caught sight of a small paragraph at the bottom of the front page:“The unidentified body of a short bald man, with a deep scar across one cheek, was recovered from the River Thames yesterday. The police believe he had committed suicide. ”I then noticed the date:just two and a half weeks before.

It was I who might have been the final cause of his terrible tragedy. For days alterwards the cruelty of my refusal made me suffer continual shame and regret. I swore that I would never again refuse any appeal for help.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people

forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase(抹去) , the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain, So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotio ns,”said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity( 特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out,”said Rebecca Dresser,a medical ethicist.

Allie, my daughter, is leaving for university in a week. Her room is piled with shopping bags filled with hlankets, towels, jeans, and sweaters.

She won't talk about going.

I say,“I'm going to miss you,”and she gives me one of her looks and leaves the room.

Another time I say, in a voice so friendly it surprises even me:“Do you think you'll take your posters and pictures with you,or will get new ones at college?”She answered, her voice filled with annoyance,“How should I know?”

One night - after a long period of silence between us - I asked what I might have done or said

to make her angry with m e. She sighed and said, “Mom, you haven't done anything. It's fine. ” It

is fine -just distant.

In middle school, when other mothers were feeling sad for estrangement (疏远)with their adolescent daughters. I hit upon a solution:rescue raids(突击抢救).I would show up occasionally at school, sign her out of class and take her somewhere - out to lunch, to the movies, once for a long walk on the beach. It kept us close.

When she started high school, I'd get up with her in the morning to make her a sandwich for lunch, and we'd silently drink a cup of tea together before the 6:40 bus came.

A couple of times during her senior years I went into her room at night, the light off, but before she went to sleep. I'd sit on the edge of her bed, and she'd tell me about problems:a teacher who lowered her grade because she was too shy to talk in class, a boy who teased her, a friend who started smoking. Her voice, coming out of the darkness, was young and questioning.

Some say the tighter your bond with your child, the greater her need to break away, to establish her own identity in the world. The more it will hurt, they say. A friend of mine who went through a difficult time with her daughter but now has become close to her again, tells me, “Your daughter will be back to you. ”

“I don't know,”I say. I sometimes feel so angry that I want to go over and shake Allie. I want

to say. “Talkk to me -or you're grounded!”I feel myself wanting to say that most horrible of all mother phrases:“Think of everything I've done for you. ”

Later one night, as I'm getting ready for bed, she comes to the bathroom door and watches me brush my teeth. For a moment, she says, “I want to read you something. ” It's a brochure from her college. “There are tips for parents.”“Don't ask your kid if he/she is homesick. Write him/her letters and call him/her a lot. Send a package of goodies---”

I know it will be hard again. It's likely there will be a right about something. But I am grateful

to be standing in here at midnight, both of us tired and sad, holding tight to -while also letting go

of - my daughter who is trying to say good-bye.

Hikikomori has become a major issue in Japan. Looeely translated as“social withdrawal(社会性自闭症)”,Hikikomori refers to the state of anomie(反常现象) into which an increasing number of young Japanese seem to fall these days. Socially withdrawal kids typically lock themselves in their bedrooms and refuse to have any contact with the outside world. They live in reverse(颠倒)they sleep all day. Wake up in the evening and stay up all night watching t v or playing video games. Some own computers or mobile phones, but most have few or no friends. Their anxiety and sadness can last for months, even years in extreme cases. No official statistics are available, but it is estimated that more than I million young Japanese suffer from the serious problem.

Hikikomori is a consequence of the phenomenal growth of the Japanese economy during

thelatter half of the century and the dramatic technological progress the country made during

that time. Japanese youth could not afford to be socially withdrawn if their parents were not rich enough to provide them a home, meals and extras that have come to be thought of as basics - audio and video equipment, software, mobile phones, computers. And there are plenty of newer technological devices for these youths to pursue.

Japan's socially withdrawn kids are a harbinger( 前兆) of a new way of life, one created by the vast changes the country had undergone in recent years. Japanese society is caught in a self- contradiction:it is concerned with the increase of socially withdrawn kids, while at The same time it applauds devices like the new Sony Play Station, which comes equipped with an Internet terminal and a DVD player. Technology like that has made it possible to produce cartoon movies without even stepping out of the house. It eventually fixes people in their individual space. Id this information society, none of us can be free from being somewhat socially withdrawn.

Socially withdrawn people find it extremely painful to communicate with the outside world, andthus turn to the tools that bring virtual reality into their closed rooms. Japan, on the other hand, must face reality itself. The country has to accept that World War I ended long ago - and so didthe glory days of national restoration and economic growth. We don't need the state to come up with an alternative national goal. Instead Japan should develop into a society in which each member isable to set his or her own aims. That's easy to say, but nor is it impossible. If the culture cannot adjust and drown in a tsunami of technology, Japan will end up sinking even deeper into a sea of confusion.

63、What is the first paragraph mainly talking about?

A、the analysis of Hikikomori - a severe social problem.

B、The impacts of Hikikomori - a severe social problem.

C、An solution of Hikikomori - a severe social problem.

D、An introduction of Hikikomori - a severe social problem.

64、According to the second paragraph, the socially withdrawn problem in Japan is .

A、a side-product of great development in economy and technology

B、the most serious social problem the Japanese youth faces

C、a reflection of behavioral disturbance of Japanese youngsters

D、the phenomenon that is consequence of World War II

65、The underlined word“it”in the third paragraph refers to .

A、a harbinger

B、Japanese society

C、a self-contradiction

D、Hikikomori

66、It is stated in the last paragraph that, to solve the problem of socially withdrawal, Japan should .

A、come up with an alternative national goal

B、keep pace with the advance of technology

C、restore its economic and financial growth

D、have its people set their own objects to pursue

In the battle between India and China over the software business, India holds the edge. But it the recent invasion of Chinese trade and information technology delegations to Bangalore, India's software capital, is any sign, China is hoping to change that.

A few weeks ago, a delegation of officials from the Chinese Ministry of Higher Education was here at Infosys Technologies, India's best - known technology company, on something of a reconnaissance mission( 侦察行动).

The Chinese, it appeared, could not stop asking questions. How are employees trained in the latest technologies? How do programmers predict the needs of the market? How does the company keep its attrition(损耗) rate under 10 percent? What kind of food is served at the cafeterias? How many employees use the gym on an average?

“We are here to learn,” said Wang Yajie, who led the delegation.

Until early last year, Chinese visitors were rare, but in the last month alone, five Chinese delegations have stopped by.

The Chinese groups from colleges and software parks are focused on one goal:they would like to replace India as the world's second largest producer of software, after the United States.

The Chinese realize that part of India's advantage comes from its schools and colleges. So, besides the stop at Infosys, this Chinese group's two-day schedule was packed with trips to the city's premier technology schools, the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Information Technology.

“The most important difference,”said Shen Weiping a professor from Jiaotong University of Shanghai,“is that professon; in India teach computers in English and professors in China teach in Chinese. ”

India took pride in outdoing its rival in information technology field. India's software exports totaled MYM6.2 billion while China's software exports were only MYM130 million last year.

With the Chinese going about learning in their quiet way, Indian technology companies are already looking over their shoulders. They fear that if the language gap is bridged, the Chinese willbegin bidding for the same slice of the pie as the Indian companies, snatching away projects and foreign currency earnings.

But how about movies for phones? They are getting their turn at MoFilm— the first mobile film festival. The first MoFilm competition received 250 entries from more than 100 countries. Entries were restricted to films that were five minutes or less in length—best for viewing and sharing on mobile phones. An independent team of judges then selected a shortlist of five film-makers. The winner was chosen from the shortlist by an audience voting using their phones. New Platforms The awards highlight the increasing influence that mobile phones are showing in the entertainment industry. Many grassroots filmmakers start out with short films. They are thwarted by the lack of opportunities to screen their work. Therefore, mobile phones are increasingly being seen as a new platform for these short works. It is a good place for anyone who wants to express themselves and find a way to have that expression be seen by a wide audience. Just think about how many people have mobile phones in the world!
