Part 1

Passage one

Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one?s career in order to attend school full time.Part time ed ucation, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends todrag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can al so impact negatively on one?s career and family time.

Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method which allows

the students the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals which are so necessary in today?s world. The time required to study may be set aside at the student?s convenience with due regard to all life?s other requirements. Additional ly, the student may enroll in distance

learning courses from virtually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career.Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferenc-ing and over the Internet.

Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation toolwith every subject. This precludes the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance learning program is the equivalence of the distancelearning course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus. The resultant diploma or degree should also be the same whether distane learning oron-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor/student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance learning program. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. Sponsoring distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.

Passage two

Another cultural aspect of nonverbal communication is one that you might not think about: space. Every person perceives himself to have a sort of invisible shield surrounding his physical body. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he bumps onto someone, he feels obligated to apologize. But the size of a person?s “comfort zone” depends on his cultural ethnic origin. For example, in casual conversation, many Americans stand about four feet apart. In other words, they like to keep each other “at arm?s length”, people in Latin or Arab cultures, in contrast, stand very close to each other, and touch each other often. If someone from one of those cultures stands too close to an American while in conversation, the American may feel uncomfortable and back away.

When Americans are talking, they expect others to respond to what they are saying. To Americans, polite conversationalists empathize by displaying expressions of excitement or disgust, shock or sadness. People with a “poker face”, whose emotions are hidden by a deadpan expression, are looked upon with suspicion. Americans also indicate their attentiveness in a conversation by raising their eyebrows, nodding, smiling politely and maintaining good eye contact. Whereas some cultures view direct eye contact as impolite or threatening, Americans see it as a sign of genuineness and honesty. If a person doesn?t look you in the eye, American might say, you should question his motives—or assu me that he doesn?t like you. Yet with all the concern for eye contact, Americans still consider staring—especially at strangers—to be rude.

Passage three

Bill Gates, the billionaire Microsoft chairman without a single earned university degree, is by his success raising new doubts about the worth of the business world's favorite academic title; the MBA(Master of Business Administration).

The MBA, a 20th century product, always has borne the mark of lowly commerce and greed on the tree lined campuses ruled by purer disciplines such as philosophy and literature. But even with the recession apparently cutting into the hiring of business school graduates, about 79,000 people are expected to receive MBAs in 1993.This is nearly 16 times the number of business graduates in 1960, a testimony to the widespread assumption that the MBA is vital for young men and women who want to run companies some day. “If you are going into the corporate world it is still a disadvantage not to have one,” said Donald Morrison, professor of marketing and management science. “But in the last five years or so, when someone says,` Should I attempt to get an MBA, 'the answer a lot more is: It depends.”

The success of Bill Gates and other non MBAs, such as the late Sam Walton of Wal Mart Stores Inc. has helped inspire self-conscious debates on business school campuses over the worth of a business degree and whether management skills can be taught.

The Harvard Business Review printed a lively, fictional exchange of letters to dramatize complaints about business degree holders. The article called MBA hires “extremely disappointing” and said “MBAs want to move up too fast, they don't understand politics and people, and they aren't able to function as part of a team until their third year. But by then, they're out looking for other jobs.” The problem, most participants in the debate acknowledge, is that the MBA has acquired an aura (光环) of future riches and power for beyond its actual importance and usefulness.

Enrollment in business schools exploded in the 1970s and 1980s and created the assumption that no one who pursued a business career could do with out one. The growth was fueled by a backlash against the anti-business values of the 1960s and by the women's movement.

Business people who have hired or worked with MBAs say those with the degrees often know

how to analyze systems but are not so skillful at motivating people. “They do n't get a lot of grounding in the people side of the business,” said James Shaffer , vice president and principal of the Towers Perrin management consulting firm.

11. According to Paragraph 2,what is the general attitude towards business on campuses dominated by purer disciplines?

A. Envious.

B. Scornful.

C. Realistic.

D. Appreciative.

12. It seems that the controversy over the values of MBA degrees has been fueled mainly by ______.

A. the success of many non MBAs

B. the complaints from various employers

C. the pro performance of MBAs at work

D. the criticism from the scientists of purer disciplines

13. What is the major weakness of MBA holders according to The Harvard Business Review?

A. They are not good at dealing with people.

B. They keep complaining about their jobs.

C. They are usually self-centered.

D. They are aggressive and greedy.

14.From the passage we know that most MBAs_________ .

A. can climb the corporate ladder fairly quickly

B. cherish unrealistic expectations about their future

C. quit their jobs once they are familiar with their workmates

D. receive salaries that do not match their professional training

15.What is the passage mainly about?

A. A debate held recently on university campuses.

B. Doubts about the worth of holding an MBA degree.

C. Why there is an increased enrollment in MBA programs.

D. The necessity of reforming MBA programs in business schools.

Passage four

Parks and similar recreation areas act as a kind of barrier between residential and industrial areas. The government is making efforts to preserve this “Green Belt” to halt the spread of industrial growth and excessive suburban “sprawl” into the surrounding countryside. Planning permission to build a new factory complex or housing estate is often refused for this reason.

People nowadays have become very conscious of the threat which modern living posses to our natural environment. They are becoming concerned about the quality of present-day life and are giving vigorous support to conservation policies which aim to safeguard the countryside that is still untouched, and to clean and restore what has already been spoiled. This involves clearing town centers of all motor traffic with its polluting fumes and gases, preventing agricultural land from being sold to unscrupulous property developers, and launching a powerful campaign against the serious chemical pollution of many of our rivers, lakes and coastal waters. There is even some talk about making our elaborate canal system viable again for the transportation of goods such as coal, which would then lessen the amount of heavy traffic on our already overloaded roads. Neither is it all empty talk; for the first time in decades fish are being caught in the lower reaches of the Thames. For the conservationists this represents a real victory and gives them well-deserved

satisfaction.

16. Motor traffic is banned from many town centers because ______ .

A. there is too much traffic already.

B. it contaminates air with fumes and gases.

C. the smell of the fumes and gases is terrible.

D. it is noisy and dangerous.

17.The “Green Belt” in line 2 refers to ______ .

A. the surrounding countryside.

B. the trees planted along the city roads.

C. recreational areas.

D. industrial areas.

18.The fact that fish are now being caught in the lower reaches of the Thames shows that _____ .

A. the campaign of cleaning up rivers has brought about a change in natural environment.

B. the government has no interest in clearing up the middle and upper reaches of that river.

C. the rest of the river is still polluted.

D. there are no fish in the middle and upper reaches of that river.

19.What threat does modern living pose to our natural environment?

A. The rising cost of living.

B. The excessive growth of suburban area.

C. The rapid expansion of industry.

D. The deterioration of the quality of life.

20.The campaign against serious pollution of rivers was launched because ______ .

A. the government wanted to preserve the cleanliness of the rivers.

B. the government wanted to raise fish in the rivers.

C. the government wanted to lessen the traffic burdens on the road.

D. the government wanted to safeguard the countryside.

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

In separate cases over the past couple of years the FTC has insisted that Twitter and Google accept regular 19 audits, too, after each firm was accused of violating its customers’ privacy. A black hole in the universe is not a solid object, like a planet, but it is shaped like a sphere. Astronomers think that at the center of a black hole there is a single point in space with infinite density. This single point is called a singularity. If the singularity theory is correct, it means that when a massive star collapses, all the material in it disappears into the singularity. The center of a black hole would not really be a hole at all, but an infinitely dense point. Anything that crosses the black hole is pulled in by its great gravity. Although black holes do exist, they are difficult to observe. These are the reasons. ● No light or anything else comes out of black holes. As a result, they are invisible to a telescope. ● In astronomical terms, black holes are truly. For example, a black hole formed by the collapse of a giant star would have an event horizon only 18 miles across. ● The nearest black holes would be dozens of light years away from Earth. One light year is about 6 trillion miles. Even the most powerful telescopes could not pick out an object so small at such a great distance. In 1994 the Hubble Space Telescope provided evidence that black holes exist. There are still answers to be found, however, so black holes remain one of the mysteries of the universe. 1. Black holes are part of space. A. True B. False C. Not Given 2. Black holes exist but are difficult to observe. A. True B. False C. Not Given 3. The black hole is shapeless as it is not a solid subject. A. True B. False C. Not Given 4. The center of a black hole is empty.

Music can also reduce stress, make depression more bearable and help you relax. All the benefits of music can only be got if the listener enjoys the music he is listening to. If the listener dislikes the music or finds it boring,it will have a negative effect on him instead of a positive one. Now let's examine what most of us do when it

comes to listening to music. We usually just listen to a play list and allow a program to randomly(任意的)select the songs we are going to listen to. This is where the program lies. What if you liked the first song but found the second one boring? What if the third one was a motivating song while the fourth didn’t suit your emotions? What do you think the result will be? What you'll have is an emotional mess! The first song will lift your mood a little. The second will make you a little bored. The third will motivate you and then the fourth will put you down. In the end you’ll end up feeling worse than before. I strongly recommend dividing your play list into different small lists. For example, a list for relaxation, a list for motivation and so on. Another very important thing you must do is to get rid of all of the old music that you are bored of. Besides, don't listen to songs with negative words or messages. The music you listen to can delay your recovery from breakups(分手)by months and months!
