Two summers ago my family went to downtown Chicago for a vacation. I kept all the ticket stubs (票根) and pictures from our vacation. I didn't know then how important they would become to me.

A few weeks later, my dad didn't feel well and was taken to the hospital.

He came home and it seemed like nothing was wrong, but I overheard a phone call and knew about my dad's lung cancer.

Our house was directly near Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients (门诊病人) at the hospital.
