Researchers in Hungary have confirmed something many dog owners have long suspected: that dogs understand our feelings.

Using a MRI (核磁共振), scientists found that when it comes to emotions, dogs' brains are similar to those of humans. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab environment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still even in an MRI scanner. That’s how researchers in Hungary’s ELTE University were able to get images of their brains at work.

Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs’ relationship with humans.“We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar social environment, but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar ways to process social information," said Andics.

After training 11 dogs to stay still while their brains were scanned, the researchers checked their neurological responses to about 200 emotionally significant sounds, from crying to laughing. They then compared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities. Andics says it opens new possibilities for research.

The dog mind is also being studied at Duke University, in North Carolina. Co-Director of the school's Dog Cognition Center, Evan MacLean, says that the Hungarian results are an important step forward.

“We’ve known for a long time that dogs have a lot of behavioral similarities compared to humans. But we don’t know anything or very little at least about whether some of these behaviors are represented similarly inside the brain of the dog, so this research is providing a first glimpses to whether these behavioral similarities are underlined by similar neural processes," said MacLean.

And what that tells ordinary dog owners, the Hungarian scientists say, is to treat your dog companions as friends, not mere animals, because they evidently understand human feelings.

Climate Change Affecting Water Resources

Scientists say climate change will not affect all regions of the world equally – especially when it comes to fresh water. The latest computer models indicate some places will get a lot less, while others get a lot more.

Dr. Jacob Schewe and his colleagues say that “the shortage of fresh water is a major threat for human development” if greenhouse gas emissions remain unchecked. They’ve published their findings in a special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “The reason we’re concerned is that it’s a very important issue for a lot of people. We all depend on water for so many different purposes," he said. "And the shortage of fresh water, where it exists, really affects many things that people do and that people live on.”Schewe works at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. He said the “steepest increase of global fresh water shortage” could happen if global warming raises two to three degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. That could happen, he said, in the next few decades.

“Under climate change, patterns of rainfalls, patterns of temperature, of evaporation, and all these variables are going to change. " he said. "And it will of course affect the availability of water around the world. So the question is in which way it will affect the water availability and will it make water even more scare in a given region, in a given place or will it lead to more water being availa ble?”

Schewe gives some examples of where he believes the computer models are accurate.

“One example,” he said, “is the Mediterranean region. Most of the models really project a strong drying. So much less water being available. That’s mainly southern Euro pe, northern Africa. So these places will be affected most probably by a reduction in water availability. Another strong signal in the opposite direction is in the high northern latitudes, so, Siberia, northern Canada. These places will probably get more water. Countries such as Israel, Turkey, Spain and Morocco could see as much as a 50-percent reduction from what they have now.”

Agriculture is the biggest consumer of freshwater. He said, “if you have a country that depends a lot on agriculture, where you’ve got a lot of agriculture, and you see that the water resources will go down in the future, then maybe now you still have some time to find the resources, find the funding, develop the technologies or buy the technologies and to use the water more efficiently.

FAO: Animal to Human Disease More Likely

About 70 percent of the new diseases that have infected humans in recent decades have come from animals. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization warns it’s getting easier for diseases to make that jump as the population and food-supply chains grow.

The FAO has released a new reported called World Livestock 2013: Changing Disease Landscapes. It says those landscapes have become “vastly more complicated” by human activity.

“I think that if we continue the state of play, we’ll only see more diseases appear –more natural resources disappear –and more threats to the human health into the food chain,” said Juan Lubroth, the agency’s Chief Veterinary Officer.

“We have certain issues such as climate change, particularly wet and tropical weathers. We have increased globalization, more traffic across the world. People traveling more, more trade. We are encroaching into habitats that previously we as humans did not really know those habitats were occupied by other species. But we are invading them.”

He said inadequate healthcare systems and public health facilities raise the risk of disease in poor areas. And as population grows, livestock production intensifies, which has its own set of risk factors.

“I f the use of the drugs on livestock does not supervised by qualified personnel, the harmful substance will be transmitted into human body. And this can, at the end, affect human health,” he said.

Lubroth gave some examples of diseases that have jumped from animals to humans.

“The origin of HIV, which causes AIDS, probably had its father in something that we know today to be monkey immunodeficiency virus. And then even more recently, we have the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which is caused by a corona virus, which likely has an animal origin. We are at the point in research, which we still are try ing to find out what origin that is.”

A. Inadequate health care system and public health facilities

B. Increasing population and poor health care system

C. Poor health care facilities and tropical weather

D. Human beings are invading other species’ habitats.

55. The passage is likely to appear in _______.

A. a biography

D

My mother says I was born a performer. She still has recordings of me at three years old, singing songs and reciting poetry. I loved audiences, loved plays and loved applause more than anything.

When I found out there was a school for the arts in my city, I begged my parents to let me have a try. Their musical theatre program started in Grade 4. I was in Grade 3, so the timing was perfect. If I got accepted, I could start the next year. Kids at my age only had to learn a dance routine, tell a joke or funny story, and sing the national anthem. It sounded easy.

I didn't know a lot of jokes. My father knew about a thousand, and gave me all sorts of ideas, but nothing seemed quite right. Finally I told my parents I would choose a ketchup story. After I performed it, my parents exchanged glances, but they didn't laugh. "Maybe you could tell a knock-knock joke," my father suggested. He had lots to choose from, but I was sure my story was funnier.

When my interview came around, my father took the day off work to drive me. My belly was full of butterflies the whole way there, but my father kept telling jokes. He obviously wanted me to use one of his instead of telling my ketchup story, but my mind was made up.

The first part of the interview was dance and I knew I wasn't very good at it, but I knew I had a great singing voice. So what if I wasn't good at dancing? When I got on stage, the teachers would see how talented I was.

When the teachers called my name, my whole body turned to ice. I stood up, rolled my shoulders, and walked on stage feeling anxious all the way. A teacher with curly brown hair and a pretty smile asked me to begin whenever I was ready, and I started right away with my story. When I finished, nobody laughed!

The teacher with the curly brown hair smiled, but she didn't laugh. My father stood in the doorway smiling, but I could feel the pity in his eyes. He'd tried to tell me the story wasn't funny, but it took standing up in front of a big group of strangers for me to realize he was right.

"I'm sorry," I said to the teachers. I'd never felt so shamed, and I just kept apologizing. "That was terrible. I can do much better, really I can."

Then it came to the singing part. I'd never struggled like I did that day. When I'd finished the national anthem, I apologized again and again, until one of the teachers said, "Never apologize at an interview." That made me feel even worse, and I vowed never to interview for anything ever again.

After that, I tried not to think about music and drama, but by the end of Grade 8 my teachers were encouraging me to try out for the arts school again. I didn't feel so embarrassed anymore about the joke nobody laughed at, so I went to the high school interview. I still wasn't great at dance, but I did better than before, and my speech and drama exercises went really well.

By the time we got to music, I thought I'd be accepted for sure. The teacher who'd told me five years before never to apologize at an audition even accompanied me on piano. I felt great... until halfway through my song I forgot all the words! My mind went blank, but I didn't apologize. The teacher asked me to sing "O Canada" instead, and I did, French and English.

I left my interview sure I'd be rejected. After all, I'd forgotten the words to my song. Why would they want me?

A few weeks later, I got a letter from the school. It was an acceptance! My very first year, I interviewed for the school musical. This time I didn't tell an unfunny joke, I didn't forget the words to my song, and guess what?

I got the lead role!

I still remember feeling uneasy and embarrassed when I told a story I thought was funny and nobody laughed. I never wanted to feel that way again. But if I hadn't taken chances, I'd never have starred in two high school plays, or gone on to work in a theatre and even write my own musical. Bad feelings fade over time. The good ones shine much brighter.

56. Why did my father keep telling jokes on my way to the art school?

A. He wanted to change my mind.

B. He wanted to comfort me.

C. He wanted to cheer me up.

D. He wanted to make fun of me.

57. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. I was nervous.

B. I was excited.

C. I was sad.

D. I was disappointed.

58. Why did nobody laugh after I finished my joke?

A. Nobody cared what I said.

B. The audience couldn’t understand it.

C. The story wasn’t funny.

D. They’d heard it before.

59. From the passage we can infer that ______.

A. my parents didn’t want me to have the interview

B. the teacher with the curly hair likes me very much

C. my first interview was a failure

D. my teacher arranged my second interview

60. The passage is organized in the pattern of _______.

A. time and events

B. comparison and contrast

C. cause and effect

D. examples and analysis

第二节:下面文章共分6段,其中5段缺少小标题(第61-65题),请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出与各端匹配的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. Apologize.

B. Own it.

C. Think about solutions.

D. Share what you’ve learned

E. Put all your cards on the table.

F. Have a heart-to-heart with your boss.

"We all make mistakes, if we're going to learn anything," notes Roxana Hewertson, an executive coach who is president and CEO of Highland Consulting Group. "You'll never forget this one, so make the most of it." Hewertson offers five tips for recovering from a failure:

61. _____.

"Even if you can, don't hide anything about what happened," Hewertson says. Anything less than total honesty is likely to make people start wondering if the situation is actually worse than it already looks.

62. _____.

As noted above, the emphasis here should be on what you've learned from this experience, and about where he or she sees you going from here. If you have a good relationship with your manager, Hewertson recommends asking how he or she recovered from a mistake, at some point in the past. Everyone has made

at least one (and often many), and sometimes they'll even tell you how they bounced back from it.

63. _____.

Whether a setback like this sinks you or not is "not really about the mistake at all," says Hewertson.

"It's about your character and how you deal with it. In most cases, people will forgive an honest mistake if

you own up to it." That takes a willingness to swallow a big gulp of humble pie -- including, Hewertson says, "no excuses, no defend, and absolutely no blaming anyone else, even if there were in fact others who contributed to what went wrong".

64. _____.

"If there were external, or even internal, customers who were adversely affected by what happened, you need to apologize to each of them. It's best to do this in person, not by email, if you possibly can," Hewertson says. "Then ask -- don't assume -- what you might be able to do to make it up to them."

65. _____.

Can you help correct the situation in some way? If you haven't already done so, offering to help out the new project leader, in any way you can, would be both considerate and smart.

The accident taught me a lesson I’ll never forget

As an old saying goes, A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit. I can’t agree more with

this view. There are many hard lessons to be learned from life. It reminds me of an accident

when I was in junior middle school. One day after school, I had to cross a crowded road to

go home. Although the cars were speeding along the road, t tried to run across it. An old granny

warned me of the danger, but I didn’t take care and persisted in walking. Unfortunately, a

car knocked me down after I was able to avoid several ones safely. When I came to myself, I

was in hospital and my leg was badly injured.

What a lesson! Every time I look at the scar in my leg, I couldn’t help telling myself

it is never too careful to cross the road. We’d better think twice before taking action.
