Several different stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine‘s Day. One legend dates as far back as the days of Roman Empire. According to the story. After his death, Valentine was made a saint and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine‘s Day----which is a time for people to send one another their greeting of many kinds.

Several years ago I worked in an office, which I had a locust tree growing outside the window. It had grown into a tall tree and must have been there for a long time. The tree blocked the view and made the office seem dull, unfortunately this happened to be the room assigned to me and I was depressed by it for quite some time.

When the first spring came, everything was green except the locust tree. Secretly, I was very happy because I had thought it had died.

One morning when I opened the window for fresh air, I unexpectedly smelt a familiar sweet scent floating into my office but I couldn‘t name it. Suddenly, I r ealized it was the locust tree! The tree that I thought dead was blossoming in full glory. From then on, I usually came to the office very early to see dew forming on the locust tree blossoms and every year was eager to see spring again.

During summer, the green leaves provided shade protecting me from the harsh sunlight, but allowing enough light in to make it pleasant. In autumn, the leaves turned into many different colors. Its beauty touched my soul. Many times I thought to take photos but never did. Then I had to leave in a hurry. Later in life it became a great regret that I had not done so. Actually, many times in our lives, we think we own something, therefore we don‘t cherish it. We don‘t feel regretful until we lose it one day! Moreover, some times, we have to accept the things we don‘t want and need to discover the hidden beauty to find unexpected joy!

第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died ― full of years‖, as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.

At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的)woman said to me, ― If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and s now, she would be alive today. It‘s my fault that she died.‖ At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, ― If only I hadn‘t insisted on my mother‘s going to Florida, she would be alive today.. that long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It‘s my fault that she‘s dead.‖You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course—keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation—would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

There are seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens that leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.

The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens , especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believe that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.

A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him , and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.

41. What is said about the two diseased elderly women?

A. They lived out a natural life

B. They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride

C. They weren‘t used to the change in weather.

D. They died due to lack of care by family members.

A. they couldn‘t find a better way to express their sorrow

B. they believe that they were responsible

C. they had neglected the natural course of events

D. they didn‘t know things often turn in the opposite direction

44. According to the passage, the underlined part in paragraph 4 probably means that_____.

A. everything in the world is predetermined

B. the world can be interpreted in different ways

C. there is an explanation for everything in the world

D. we have to be sensible in order to understand the world

45. What‘s the idea of the passage?

A. Life and death is an unsolved mystery.

B. Every story should have a happy ending.

C. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault.

D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away.

Dear Betty,

My roommate‘s family wants me to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with them in their home. I accepted the invitation, and I‘m excited about going, but I‘m a little nervous about it, too. The social customs in my country are different from thos e here, so I‘m a little worried about making mistakes.

Should I bring a gift, such as candy or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that I‘m thankful for t heir kindness?

Yours,

Knowing Nothing

Dear Knowing Nothing,

It‘s a good idea to bring a gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always welcome, or yo u can bring a bottle of wine if you know the family drink it.

You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don‘t get there early. If you are going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.

Try to relax at the dinner table. If you don‘t know how to use the right fork, knife or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, don‘t be shy about asking the person next to you; it‘s bett er to ask them than to be silently uncomfortable and nervous.

If you like the food, say so. Of course, you‘ll thank the host and hostess for the meal and for their kindness. It‘s also a good idea to send a card to thank them the day after.

Yours,

Betty

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.

On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine‘s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest in the third century Rome. When the emperor (皇帝) decided that single men could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn‘t allow marriage.

But Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to death. While in prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed ―From your Valentine‖, an expression that is still in use today. Valentine died for what he believed in and so he was made a Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one of history‘s most romantic characters.

Nowadays, Valentine‘s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some students are planning to make Valentine‘s cards for parents, teachers and friends. 第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another and that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winners and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young

people I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn‘t matter because I really didn‘t try.‖ What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost , that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one‘s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

B. those who value competition most highly

C. those who are against competition most strongly

D. those who rely on others most for success

49. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail?

A. One‘s worth lies in his performance compared with others.

B. One‘s success in competition needs great e fforts.

C. One‘s achievement is determined by his particular skills.

D. One‘s success is based on how hard he has tried.

50. Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Every effort should be paid back.

B. Competition should be encouraged.

B

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as ―honor‖ help you creat e this life of good feelings.

Here‘s an example to show how honorable actions creat e happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk‘s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don‘t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the e rror to the clerk‘s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable thoughts that lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it‘s easy to think and act honorably again when we‘re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it‘s started, it‘s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

51. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our _____.

A. self-respect

B. financial rewards

C. advertising ability

D. friendly relationship

52. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to _____.

A. telling the truth to the clerk

B. offering advice to the clerk

C. asking the clerk to be more attentive

54. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

A. We‘ll be very excited

B. We‘ll feel unfortunate.

C. We‘ll have a sense of honor

D. We‘ll feel sorry for the clerk
