On the high-speed train A vignon to Paris, my husband and I landed in the only remaining seats on the train in the middle of a car, directly opposite a Frenchwoman of middle years. It was an extremely uncomfortable arrangement to be looking straight into the eyes of a stranger. My husband and I pulled out books. The woman produced a large makeup case and made up her face. Except for a lunch break, she continued this activity for the entire three-hour trip. Every once in a while she surveyed the car with a bright-eyed glance, but never once did she catch my eye. My husband and I could have been a blanket wall.

I was amused, but some people would have felt uncomfortable, even repulsed(厌恶的).there is something about making up in public that calls up strong emotional reactions. Partly it’s a question of hygiene. And it’s a matter of degree. Making up ---- a private act---- has a way of neglecting the presence of others. I was once seated at a party with a model-actress who immediately waved a silly brush and began dusting her face at the table, demonstrating that while she was next to me, she was not with me.

In fact, I am generally prohibited from making up in public, except when I am in the company of cosmetics moment. In a gathering more professional than social, I would do so.

Kathy Peiss, a history professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst says that nose-powdering in the office was an occasion for outrage in 1920’s and 30’s. Deploring(强烈反对) the practice as a waste of company time, trade journals advises managers to discourage it among workers. Peiss theorizes that it was female’s making up in what has been an all-male field that disturb some gentlemen.

Peiss tells me that after the 30’s, pulling out a make-up case was no longer an issue. It became an accepted practice. I asked if she feels free to apply lipstick at a professional lunch herself. Sounding mildly shocked, she says she would save that for the privacy of her car afterward. Why? Because it would be “a gesture of i nappropriate feminity(女性化).” One guess is that most professional women feel this way. There is evidence of the popularity of the new lipsticks that remain in place all day without retouching.

61. According to the author, “My husband and I could have been a blanket wall.” (Line 6, Para.1) most probably means “________”.

A. We were of no existence in the French woman’s eyes.

B. We looked at the French woman expressionlessly.

C. We were treated with an expressionless face.

D. We used books as a wall to av oid the woman’s eyes.

62. In the author’s opinion, she _______.

A.feels comfortable when making up in public.

B. makes up before any professional gatherings.

C. only makes up on social occasions.

D. allows public making up on certain occasions.

63. According to Peiss, nose powdering in an office was criticized mainly for the reason that ____.

A.normal office work was disturbed.

B. make dominance was emphasized there.

C. it discouraged women’s interest in career.

D. it distracted make workers’ focu s on work.

64. Why do most professional women give up using lipsticks in public?

A.Because they are worried about being looked down upon.

B.Because it implies women’s disadvantages in academic fields.

C.Because they are ashamed to be seen making up in front of males.

D.Because it emphasizes their female features in wrong situations.

65. It can be inferred that in a highly open society, the differences between men and women ______.

A. have attracted little attention.

B. hinder the social development.

C. still call for great concern.

D. are attractive topics in talk shows.

C

People in several American states may be surprised to see cars on city streets without a driver. Experimental driverless vehicles now are legal in Florida, Nevada and California. They are pointing the way to a future that is not far down the road. The high-tech company Google has a number of self-driving cars, which had covered 480,000 kilometers by August. V olvo is among the companies doing road tests and says it plans to sell driverless cars by 2020.

In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed an act to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads of his state. “ Today we're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality-the driverless car. ”The technology f or these cars includes cameras, radar and motion sensors. The systems have been improved through competitions sponsored by the U. S. government agency DARPA. Engineer Richard Mason of the Rand Corporation helped design driverless vehicles for DARPA challenge races.

Cars have become much more fuel-efficient, and new electronic features are making Hondas safer, said Angie Nucci of Honda America. “ A camera on the passenger-side mirror actually engaged on your guiding screen so you can safely change lanes. ” Other safety features include warning systems on the front and the sides of the cars. Thesystems help drivers, but don't replace them. Curator Leslie Kendall of the Petersen Automotive Museum said autonomous cars will make the high ways safer.

“By taking out drivers, you also remove most risks of an accident,” Kendall said. He said consumers, however, may be unwilling to lose control. “It may take them time to come to realize that the technology is indeed reliable, but it will have to prove itself first. ”

Mason said the technology already works and the biggest challenge now is getting down the cost for driverless vehicles from hundreds of thousands of dollars to something more affordable. He said this will happen as the technology is improved.

66. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A. Driverless vehicles are now legal in the whole USA.

B. V olvo will be the first to sell driverless cars.

C. Google’s self-driving cars have covered a long distance.

D. Driverless cars are pointing us a faraway future.

67. We learn that Governor of California Jerry Brown_________.

A. helped design self-driving cars.

B. improved the self-driving car systems.

C. considers self-driving cars science fiction.

D. supports self-driving cars on roads.

68. What is the role of the systems mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A. They can take the place of drivers now.

B. They can help people drive more safely.

C. They can make cars run without fuel.

D. They can help cars run much faster.

69. According to Richard Mason, what is the biggest challenge for driverless cars?

A. They are now too expensive for consumers.

B. Their technical problems remain to be solved.

C. They are not allowed to run on the road.

D. They are more dangerous for people on the street.

70. What's the best title of the passage?

A. The benefits of the self-driving cars.

B. The biggest challenge of the self-driving cars.

C. Self-driving cars-science fiction future is near.

D. Safer or more dangerous-self-driving cars.

Part IV Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV sitcoms (情景喜剧) and in movies . The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can learn in an easy way. Thus it is necessary for you to learn the secrets of becoming straight-A students.

Among the students we interviewed, study times are a matter of personal perference. Some work late at night when it is quiet ,whereas others awake early. And there are still others who decide to study as soon as they come home from school when the work is fresh in their minds. All of them agree, however,on the need for study time.“Whatever I was doing,I would find some time every day for studying,” says a top student from New Jersey.

Being organized is another habit they share in common. McCray, an outstanding student interviewed, runs track, plays football and is in a band . “I was so busy; I couldn’t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it,” he says. Some students maintain two folders (文件夹)—one for the day’s assignment, another for papers completed and graded. However, some students have another system, filing the day’s papers in color-coded(颜色编码的)folders by subject.

The top students also take good notes while reading the text assignment. In fact, David Cieri, another top student interviewed, uses “my homemade” system in which he draws a line down the center of a notebook, writes notes from the text on one side and those from the lecture delivered by his teacher on the other. Then. He is able to review both aspects of the assignment at once .

Just before the bell rings, most students close their books, put away papers, whisper to friends and get ready to rush out. But the top students use the few minutes to write a two-or three-sentenc e summary of the lesson’s important points, which he or she scans before the next day’s class.

Section B (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

(Reuters) — At least 115 miners were pulled alive from a flooded coal mine in north China after being trapped for over a week, eating bark to survive, prompting extremely happy officials to hail their survival a miracle.

Officials said 153 miners were trapped in the unfinished Wangjialing mine, belonging to two of China's larger state-owned firms in Xiangning, Shanxi Province, after water gushed (喷, 涌) into the shafts last Sunday.

Late on Sunday night and throughout Monday, the survivors were pulled out from a platform, where the rescuers had drilled a vertical hole to ensure oxygen in the water-flooded pit and send down bags of glucose (葡萄糖). Thirty-eight miners were still missing.

"It is a miracle," said Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety. "The trapped miners stayed so firmly determined down the mine shaft, passing through eight days and eight nights to live." The workers also survived by eating bark from pine wood used in building the mines, Chinese television said.

The government had succeeded in encouraging thousands of rescue workers to pump out water and search for the miners. After that, the water level dropped low enough for rescue workers to enter the shaft.

It was rare good news in China's dangerous coal-mining industry, the deadliest in the world with thousands killed every year in floods, explosions, collapses and other accidents. Shanxi Province is the heartland of that industry.

Strong demand for energy and not strict safety standards have made China's mines often deadly places to work, despite a government drive to clamp down on (对……进行压制或取缔) small, unsafe operations where most accidents occur.

Workers are tempted into (被诱惑去) the mines by wages that can be much higher than for many other jobs open to blue-collar workers and rural migrants.

China has consolidated (合并) or taken over many private mines, which has helped cut accidents. According to official statistics, the number of people killed in Chinese coal mines dropped to 2,631 in 2009, an average of seven a day, from 3,215 in 2008. But the deadliest accidents are not limited to private firms.

82. How did the rescuers manage to send down oxygen and bags of glucose into the pit? (no more than 5 words)

Section C (25 marks)

Possible version:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing to apply to study in your university. I read about the admission information while surfing the net the other day. I’m really interested in it.

On the one hand, I’m an outgoing girl and I can get on well with all my classmates. On the other hand, I do well in most of my subjects, especially in English. I like reading English poems and enjoy English movies. Speeches delivered by famous people like Martin Luther. King, President Bush and so on, are also my favorite. What’s more, I once won the first prize for English speech contest held in our city and was honored the Best Speaker for my excellence performances.

As we all know, English is a universal language and I like to communicate with different people, so I intend to major in English if I am admitted into your university. I want to have a job relating with languages in the future and I believe I can help promote cultural communication between China and the world.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours,

Li Hua

Conversation 2

W: Hello!

M: Hi! Jessie. Where are you? Are you at home?

M: Ok. I’ll wait for you. I’ll read the menu first.

W: Alright, See you.

Conversation 3

M: Where are you from?

W: The United States. I live in New Y ork.

M: Oh, really? I think it’s a big city with a large po pulation, right?

By the way, do you like it?

W: Yeah. I think it’s the only place to live.

M: Why do you say that?

W: Y ou see, there’s always something exciting to do, and it’s never boring.

M: My place isn’t boring, either. Y ou can fish, hike, grow some vegetables

---all kinds of things, if you like, though it’s small and quiet.

W: I guess so, especially here in New Zealand.

Conversation 4

W: Hey, you. Can't you be a bit faster? You make the whole group wait for you.

M: How can you blame it on me? I'm having trouble in operating this kind of machine. It is designed for you right handers.

W: You always complain about these machines. But you are not the only one using your left hand. M: Really? I don't know any others who are the same as me.

W: To tell you the truth, I'm also left-handed.

M: You?

W: Yes. In fact, it pays to use both hands.

M:OK, I will try.

Conversation 5

I’m too old for all that now. M: That sounds just wonderful to us, madam.

W: When do you want to move in?

M: How about this afternoon?

W: Fine. I’ll be expecting you around two. And I’ll give each of you a house key then.
