1. MeituPic

Developed by the Xiamen-based Meitu Inc, MeituPic is the company’s flagship beauty camera app and was the first to become a big hit among Western users. The app has drawn some 456 million users, who use it to post more than 6 billion photos every

Only about 30 percent of people in the US know how to perform CPR (心肺复苏术). Recently, a 9-year-old boy showed a Georgia woman how to perform CPR on her newborn baby.

Susanna Rohm said she had experienced a parent’s worst nightmare (噩梦) — her 2-month-old son, Isiah, was not brea thing. “I noticed he looked pale. I looked at his arms and his legs and they were limp (无力的),” Rohm told a local newspaper. “Then I noticed that he looked like he wasn’t alive.” In dismay, she dropped and broke her cellphone. Rohm had to run into the street, screaming for help.

“I had him in my arms and screamed over and over. Then I ran outside. I saw two boys playing across the street, and I yelled, ‘Go and ask your parents to call 911,’” Rohm said. But the two boys were able to do more than that. Nine-year-old Ethan Wilson took action, showing Rohm how to perform CPR on little Isiah while ten-year-old Rocky Hurt helped as well.

Rocky said he had learned the CPR technique from a poster in a health class at their school, Sedalia Park Elementary. “I was thinking we’d better give her a helping hand instead of getting scared,” Ethan said. “I told her to push on the baby’s chest five to ten times a minute with only two fingers, tilt back the baby’s head, plug the baby’s nose and breathe into the baby’s mouth,” Ethan said in an interview.

At last, Isiah began crying and was breathing again. He spent two nights in a local hospital. “If the little boy hadn’t shown me what to do right there, my baby would probably not be alive right now,” Rohm said.

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perha ps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? I t’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their te acher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin, “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese

tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

28. What can we learn about the Character Hero?

A. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.

B. It’s open to people o f all ages and all walks.

C. It draws great public attention across the country.

D. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.

29. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?

A. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.

B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.

C. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.

D. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.

30. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ________.

A. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive

B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry

C. necessary for adults to survive in China

D. an ability to be developed only when you are students

31. Where does this text probably come from? ________

A. A science report.

B. A news report.

C. Children’s literature.

D. An advertisement.

What will power your house in the future? Nuclear, wind, or solar power? According

to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, it might

be leaves – but man-made ones.

Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用). Now researchers have found a way to copy this seemingly simple process.

The man-made leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his partners at MIT can be seen

as a special chip with catalysts (催化剂). Similar to natural leaves, it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen

gases are then stored in a fuel cell (电池), which uses those two materials to produce electricity.

A man-made leaf is not a new idea. The first man-made leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and changeable for practical use. The new leaf, on the contrary, is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies, Nocera showed that a man-made leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity.

The wonderful improvements come from Nocera’s recent discovery of several powerful, new, inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy change inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now, the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the machine can run in whatever water is available; that is, it doesn’t need pure water. This is important for some countries that don’t have enough pure water.

With the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “giving energy to the poor”, scientists believe that the new machine could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

32. What will give power to our house in the future, according to MIT?

A. Man-made leaves.

B. Nuclear.

C. Solar power.

D. Wind.

33. Which of the following orders correctly shows how the man-made leaf is used to produce electricity?

a. man-made leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen

b. the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell

c. the man-made leaves are put in water

d. the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity

A. cbad.

B. bcad.

C. cabd.

D. cadb.

34. What does the underlined “stable” in the 4th paragraph mean?

A. Secure.

B. Powerful.

C. Unnatural.

D. Unchangeable.

35. The aim of the scientists at MIT in developing the new man-made leaves is

to .

A. build up more power stations in the world

B. provide cheaper energy for developing countries

C. offer people in developing countries access to pure water

D. gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process
