II. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 20 points) Directions: There are 2 passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage One Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can

charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal”. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agre e on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on street. No man who thought of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.

Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn't it matter? Should you use both hands when you are eating? Should leave one in your lap, or on the table?

The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is , if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock , the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.

The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable-----especially if they are your guests. When the food was served , one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife . The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

Passage One Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

The economy of the United states after 1952 was the economy of a well-fed, almost fully employed people. Despite occasional alarms, the country escaped any postwar depression and lived in a state of boom. An economic survey of the year 1955, a typical year of the 1950’s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic growth of the decade. The national output was value at 10 percent above that of 1954 (1955 output was estimated at 392 billion dollars). The production of manufacturers was about 40 percent more than it had averaged in the years immediately following World War 2. The country’s business spent about 30billion dollars for new factories and machinery. National income available for spending was almost a third greater than it had been it had been in 1950. Consumers spent about 256 billion dollars; that is about 700 million dollars a day ,or about twenty-five million dollars every hour , all round the clock. Sixty-five million people held jobs and only a little more than two million wanted jobs but could not find them. Only agriculture complained that it was not sharing in the room. To some observers this was an ominous echo of the mid-1920’s . As farmer’s shar e of their products declined, marketing costs rose. But there were, among the observers of the national economy, a few who were not as confident as the majority. Those few seemed to fear that the boom could not last and would eventually lead to the opposite-depression.

[A] 60%[B] 50%[C] 33%[D] 90%

Passage Two Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

According to sociologists, there are several different ways in which a person may become recognized as the leader of a social group. In the family, traditional cultural patterns confer leadership on one or both of the parents. In other cases, such as friendship groups, one or more persons may gradually emerge as leaders, although there is no formal process of selection. In larger groups, leaders are usually chosen formally through election or recruitment.

Although leaders are often thought to be people with unusual personal ability, decades of

research have failed to produce consistent evidence that there is any category of “natural leaders”. It seems that there is no set of personal qualities that all leaders have in common; rather, virtually any person may be recognized as a leader if the person has qualities that meet the needs of that particular group.

Research suggests that there are typically two different leadership roles that are held by different individuals. Instrumental leadership is leadership that emphasizes the completion of tasks by a social group. Group members look to instrumental leaders to “get things done”. Expressive leadership, on the other hand, is leadership that emphasizes the collective well beings of a social group’s members. Expressive leaders are less concerned with the overall goals of the group th an with providing emotional support to group members and attempting to minimize tension and conflict among them.

Instrumental leaders are likely to have a rather secondary relationship to other group members. They give others and may discipline group members who inhibit(阻碍)attainment of the group’s goals. Expressive leaders cultivate a more personal or primary relationship to others in the group. They offer sympathy when someone experiences difficulties and try to resolve issues that threaten to divide the group. As the difference in these two roles suggest, expressive leaders generally receive more personal affection from group members; instrumental leaders, if they are successful in promoting group goals, may enjoy a more distant respect.

36. What does the passage mainly discuss?

[A] The problems faced by leaders.

[B] How leadership differs in small and large groups.

[C] How social groups determine who will lead them.

[D] The role of leaders in social groups.

[C] specific leadership training

[D] traditional cultural patterns

38. Which of the following statements about leadership can be inferred from paragraph 2?

[A] Person who is an effective leader of a particular group may not be an effective leader in another group.

[B] Few people succeed in sharing a leadership role with another person.

[C] A person can best learn how to be an effective leader by studying research on leadership.

[D] Most people desire to be leaders but can produce little evidence of their qualifications.

39. In mentioning “natural leaders” in line 7, the author is making the point that.

[A] few people qualify as “natural leaders”

[B] there is no proof that “natural leaders” exist

[C] “natural leaders” are easily accepted by the members of a group

Many people wrongly believe that when people reach old age, their families place them in nursing homes. They are left in the 41 of strangers for the rest of their lives. Their 42 children visit them only occasionally, but more often, they do not have any 43 visitors. The truth is that this idea is an unfortunate myth 44 story. In fact, family members provide over 80 percent of the care 45 elderly people need. Samuel Preston,a sociologist, studied 46 the American family is changing. II. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 20 points) Directions: There are 2 passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage One Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage

Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3000 U.S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death.

Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined .While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised.

First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent .

Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.

31. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _____.

[A] traffic accidents [B] smoking-related disease

[C] murder [D] all of these

32. Every day there are over_____ high school students who will become regular smoker.

[C] students who lost their way [D] students who were driven out of school

34.The reason for declining adolescent smoking is that ________.

[A]. NCI has taken effective measures

[B]. smoking is prevented among high school seniors

[C]. there are many smokers who have died of cancer

[D]. none of these

35.What is implied but not stated by the author is that ____ ___.

[A]. smoking rates among youth have declined very little

[B]. there are now more female than male smokers among high school seniors

[C]. high smoking rates are due to the increase in wealth

[D]. smoking at high school are from low socio-economic backgrounds

Passage Two Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is an natural part of everyday lift and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

36. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.

[A]. they do not know how to enjoy themselves

[B]. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health

[C]. they are traveling fast all the time

[D]. they are becoming busier with their work

37According to the writer ,the most important character for a good manager is his ________.

[A] not fearing stress [B] knowing the art of relaxation

[C] high sense of responsibility [D] having control over performance

38. Which of the following statements is true?

[A].We can find some ways to avoid stress

[B].Stress is always harmful to people

[C].It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.

[D].Different people can withstand different amounts of stress

39.In Paragraph 3, "such a reaction" refers back to_______.

[A]."making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'"

[B]."reaction to stress both chemically and physically"

[C]."responding to crises quickly"

[D]."losing heart at the signs difficulties"

40.In the last sentence of the passage, “do so " refers to ______

[A]."expose ourselves to stress"

[B]."find ways to deal with stress"

[C]."remove stress from our lives"

Unit 1 Presenting a Speech Road Building Good morning, everyone. Today I'l l be talking about the relationship between road building and the development of the American economy during the 18th century. About 300 years ago, the United States' economy was growing rapidly, mainly because of a booming trade in two important agricultural products: grain and cotton. Grain output in the eastern part of America increased quickly at that time due to the rapidly growing population and the large number of immigrants from Europe. As a result, the demand for grain almost doubled. For this reason, the trade in grain first developed in this part of the country. At the same time, the road system was gradually built up in order to transport the grain from the rural areas to various cities. The road building clearly helped develop the economy quickly in these areas and in the cities as well. During the same period, farmers in the South could get a large amount of laborers from Africa, and they started to grow cotton. As the cotton output increased, the farmers needed to sell it in other places. As a result, many roads were built to link the rural areas to the cities. At first, this trade of grain and cotton took place along the coast, or near rivers and lakes. It took place there because it was easy and cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Before 1700, it was very expensive to move the goods by road.
