Consideration and wisdom are necessary before we do everything. Having taken a course of action without (41), we find at once too many difficulties, small or big, preventing our progress. If we avoid acting hurriedly, we can avoid most of our troubles. For instance, a young man has a gift for teaching and doing research work. What a(n) (42) act it would be for him to go and work as a businessman! Most people fail to have a satisfactory life because they have (43) a job for which they didn’t mean to go in. Without taking into consideration our means and abilities for a particular business we should not run(44) into it.

However, too much care and fear results in failure. It is a (45) to hesitate or delay action when instant action is called for. When a swimmer has to save a drowning man, he must act at once without delay. Similarly, to rescue a child or a woman from a (46) house, we must rush in without hesitation. Where there is no room for delay and hesitation, there must be no hesitation or delay. If there is too much care, too much fear of risks, results are often attended with failure.

So only with combination of consideration, courage and confidence can we get over any difficulty. We can be (47) and realize our aims in life only by just getting the three points put together. Foresight and (48) combined with courage and confidence in taking unavoidable risks are necessary. With them we can prove ourselves able to deal with (49) problems and ensure success.

NEW YORK (Reuters life!)—The number of people subscribing (订阅) to newspapers may be shrinking (萎缩) as they flock to the Internet, but electronic book readers won’t shred the market for ink, paper, glue and binding anytime soon.

After years of promises and false starts, booksellers and technology companies are diving into the world of digital books. Sony Corp. is selling the Reader Digital Book for $299, while giant online shopping company https://www.wendangku.net/doc/1b18121768.html, offers the Kindle for $399.

New readers are lighter than the average hardback fiction bestseller, easy on the eyes and let readers carry around as many as 200 titles in hardware that weighs less than a pound.

But to some people, there’s something missing.

“It’s, I guess, the feel of holding a book that someone really put a lot of effort into writing, and you kind of (有几分) lose that a little bit with a digital product,”said Katy Farina, 21, of Montgomery, New Jersey. She was browsing (浏览) at the Borders Bookstore near Madison Square Garden. As shoppers lined up at closing time, the subtle, comforting aroma (芳香) of books permeated (弥漫) the store.

“It feels real, whereas (the reader) kind of s eparates you a little bit from the story,” Farina said. Harry Howe, who had picked up a book, said he might use an e-book reader for blog or Website material that he wanted to read while away from home, but not for reading a novel.

“It’s just not a physical experience that I’m yet comfortable with,”said Howe, 55, “on the other hand, I didn’t grow up reading things on various Websites.”

Farina said she would like a reader for travelling because she would not have to transport so many books. “To put 10 books on your Sony reader or on your Kindle is a lot better than carrying 10 books,” she said.

65. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. E-books Read Well, but Readers Prefer Paper

B. Readers Flock to the World of Digital Books

C. Newspapers Are in Danger of Disappearing

D. There’s Something Missing with E-books

66. What’s the advantage of a reader or a Kindle?

A. They are both cheap.

B. They can make people feel real.

C. They are easy to carry and hold many books.

D. They have instant access to the Internet.

67. The underlined part “ink, paper, glue and binding” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to

________.

A. all kinds of stationery

B. e-books

C. paper books

D. newspapers and documents

A new research has uncovered that culture is a determining factor when interpreting facial emotions. The study reveals that in cultures where emotional control is the standard, such as Japan,

the focus is placed on the eyes to interpret emotions. Whereas in cultures where emotion is openly expressed, such as the United States, the focus is on the mouth to interpret emotions.

“These findings go against the popular theory that the facial expressions of basic emotions can be universally (普遍地) recognized,”said University of Alberta researcher Dr. Takahiko Masuda. “A person’s culture plays a very strong role in determining how they will perceive (察觉) emotions and needs to be considered when interpreting facial expressions.”

These cultural differences are even noticeable in computer emoticons, which are used to convey a writer’s emotions over email and text messaging. The Japanese emoticons for happiness and sadness vary in terms of how the eyes are depicted(描画), while American emoticons vary with the direction of the mouth. In the United States the emoticons : ) and : -) show a happy face, whereas the emoticons : ( or : -( show a sad face. However, Japanese tend to use the symbol (^_^) to indicate a happy face, and (;_;) to indicate a sad face.

“We think it is quite interesting and appropriate that a culture tends to mask its emotions. The Japanese would focus on a person’s eyes when determining emotion, as eyes tend to be quite subtle,”said Masuda. “In the United States, where overt (公开的) emotion is quite common, it makes sense to focus on the mouth, which is the most expressive feature on a person’s face.”68. Which emoticon is used by Japanese to show a

sad face?

A. (;_;)

B. : - )

C. : - (

D. : (

69. If a Japanese wants to judge whether a smile is genuine or fake, he will probably ________.

A. read the whole face

B. fix on the mouth

C. look the person in the eyes

D. judge by listening to the sound

70. The use of computer emoticons by the Americans

shows that ________.

A. they usually have two different emoticons to show the same feeling

B. they use simpler emoticons to show their feelings

C. they show different feelings by changing the direction of the mouth

D. they express their feelings more secretly

When in doubt, cut that out! Yeah, yea, Doubting Thomas may have had a point in his day, and life may not be what you want it to be, but if you constantly doubt yourself, how can you accomplish anything?

Where is your confidence? What possible good can come from taking the negative aspect of any

situation and growing it into acceptance?

Purpose of achievement is to attain a goal. So, if you set your goals and strive to get there, it should be assumed that you are moving toward your goal no matter what you are doing, right? When watching a football game, one of those great high school starter games, set to determine who starts when the real games begin, I noticed the coach called “defense” only when the team was “protecting” their goal. As long as the team was fighting for mo re ground they played “offense (进攻)”. Along the same lines, I’ve heard the phrase, “a strong defense requires a good offense.”Simply put, if you concentrate more on gaining ground than on protecting your goals, your accomplishments will be greater. Time spent protecting your goals is wasted time, when you could be working toward attaining your goals rather than preventing others from reaching their goal.

In business, if you waste your time focusing on what your competitior is doing rather than working toward meeting your goals, you won’t get very far.

Focus your attention on where you’re going. Don’t waste time worrying about where your competition is. You will gain ground while they are watching you. Smile as you reach your destination.

75. The writer of the passage intends to tell us

________.

A. a common rule in a football game

B. how to beat our competitors

C. how to overcome our doubts and achieve our goals

D. how to deal with doubt in our business

76. The author’s purpose of mentioning Doubting Thomas in the first paragraph is to ________.

A. show that famous people change our life

B. tell us to succeed we should not doubt ourselves

C. ask us to learn from successful people

D. tell us it’s quite natural for people to doubt themselves

77. The author suggests that in business we should ________.

A. avoid too much competition

B. seek as much cooperation as possible

C. focus on our own goals

D. know our competitors as well as ourselves

78. What did the author learn from watching a football game?

A. Slowness and steadiness win the race.

B. A good offense is the best defense.

C. Teamwork leads to success.

D. A miss is as good as a mile.

79. The passage is intended for ________.

A. football players

B. coaches

C. businessmen

D. common readers

(E)

Directions: Read the following text and then choose the most suitable heading from A—F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you don’t need.

A. Who does freelancing?

B. The pros and cons of freelance

C. What is the definition of freelance?

D. Key to freelance success

E. What is freelancing really like?

F. The best way to develop a career

80. ________ Freelance (自由职业者) is a word that goes back to medieval (中古世纪的) times when it was used to describe soldiers who sold their skills to those prepared to pay their market rate. Today it’s an increasingly common way of working for people in a range of occupations and appeals to many who feel constrained by corporate culture.

81. ________ What you gain is freedom of movement; what you can lose is a sense of belonging. You can end up feeling isolated from normal support networks, because suddenly you are responsible for your own welfare, training, safety, career development, equipment, professional updating and a thousand other things, it is easy to remain unaware of these things in the relatively cosseted existence of full-time employment. So before you leap up into this exciting and potentially rewarding way of working, stand back and take a look at the risks.

82. ________ Freelancing has always been a common way of working for writers, artists and performers, but the range of occupations with a substantial number of freelancers is growing steadily. Anyone with a marketable skill can choose to go it alone. Websites offer a free directory listing for those with skills to sell. Their categories (范畴) include accountants, healthcare consultants, landscape architects and computer trainers. Areas of work that have problems recruiting staff are always keen to employ freelancers.

83. ________ Being a freelance is different from other forms of self-employment —you still work for an employer or several employers but have to develop a completely different set of relationships with them. Employers are now your customers, you are their supplier. You have to become indispensable (不可缺少的) to them, providing solutions to their problems, some of which they may not even realized they had. In many ways you have to behave like their dream employee, being more willing and available than you may have got used to whilst in a “proper job”.

84. ________ You also have to be aware of, and sensitive to, the fact that you can be seen as a threat by your customer’s conventional employees, who may regard you as taking work they could do. Successful freelancing relies on the co-operation of everyone you come into contact with. Work that brings you into conflict with an existing workforce can be more troublesome than it’s worth.

Part B Passages

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Ernest Hemingway was one of the 20th century’s most important writers. His simple, direct style

greatly influenced other writers.

Hemingway was born on July 21st, 1899. His father was a doctor. His mother was a singer who had given up her career to marry. Young Ernest learned about nature, hunting and fishing from his father. The family spent their summers on Walloon Lake and Ernest was soon able to shoot, fish and swim very well. He read a great deal. He especially liked adventure stories and science. In high school he got A’s, edited the school paper and played in the school band.

When World War I began in Europe, Ernest wanted very much to go, but his eyesight was poor. So he joined the Red Cross and was sent to Italy. He was wounded when taking supplies to frontline troops and returned home a hero.

Hemingway’s first serious novel was The Sun Also Rises. It was published in 1926 and it immediately became a best seller. Another novel, A Farewell to Arms, was based on his war experiences in Italy. His longest novel was For Whom the Bell Tolls. It was based on a war in Spain, and it was also very successful. His short novel The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1953. The Old Man and the Sea brought Hemingway the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. Later Hemingway became very ill and depressed. On July 2nd, 1961, he shot himself.

Questions:

11. What did Hemingway learn from his father?

12. Why couldn’t he become a soldier during World War I?

13. Which of the following novels was his first best seller?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

There are many kinds of successes; many kinds of winners; many kinds of failures. It is not always clear what is winning and what is failing.

Esther is a true champion in this story. Esther competed against her friend, Kay, in the US Olympic Trials for her sport—wrestling. Esther won all her fights, which qualified her for the finals.

Her friend Kay also won her selective matches. But in her last fight before the finals, Kay injured her knee. Now only Kay, with an injured leg and Esther remained in the final selection round. Only one woman would be chosen for the Olympic team. “I looked at her with one good leg against me with two good legs,”Esther recalled, “and I said, ‘It’s not fair!’”

Then Esther made a hard decision. She let Kay win the match. She guessed Kay’s leg would be fully healed when the Olympic Games began. In return, Kay bought Esther a ticket to the Sydney Olympics, so she could watch and cheer from the stands.

“This was our dream, going to the Olympics,” Esther said. “I cried about it.” But Esther discovered something important. “I gave her my dream,” she said, “but for the first time ever, I feel like a champ.” Esther won a victory of the spirit, which qualifies her as a true champion. Questions:

14. What did Esther and Kay compete with each other for?

15. In which match did Kay injure her leg?

16. Why did Esther let Kay win in the final selection match?

One possible version:

Dear Lucy,

Have you heard the news that China has sent a rocketship, Chang’e I, to the moon and now it has been successfully circling around the moon? You will never know how excited we Chinese people are! This shows that China is among the most advanced countries in space exploration and we Chinese have the ability to do whatever we want to do. The success also inspires us to work harder than ever to do everything well.

As a Senior Three student, I will go to college soon, and, interested in the mysteries in the universe, I want to major in space science in the university. Then I can do some experiments about space agriculture, and using space for peaceful purposes, for the happiness of the whole human race. Maybe I can be an astronaut in the near future!

Best wishes and good luck with everything.

III. Reading Comprehension Section B ( 22%) Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (C) Open data-sharers are still in the minority in many fields. Although many researchers broadly agree that public access to raw data would accelerate science—because other scientists might be able to make advances not foreseen by the data's producers—most are reluctant to post the results of their own labours online. When Wolkovich, for instance, went hunting for the data from the 50 studies in her meta-analysis, only 8 data sets were available online, and many of the researchers whom she e-mailed refused to share their work. Forced to extract data from tables or figures in publications, Wolkovich's team could conduct only limited analyses. Some communities have agreed to share online—geneticists, for example, post DNA sequences at the GenBank repository(库), and astronomers are accustomed to accessing images of galaxies and stars from, say, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a telescope that has observed some 500 million objects –but these remain the exception, not the rule. Historically, scientists have objected to sharing for many reasons: it is a lot of work; until recently, good databases did not exist; grant funders were not pushing for sharing; it has been difficult to agree on standards for formatting data and the contextual information called metadata; and there is no agreed way to assign credit for data. But the barriers are disappearing in part because journals and funding agencies worldwide are encouraging scientists to make their data public. Last year, the Royal Society in London said in its report that scientists need to ‘shift away from a research culture where data is viewed as private preserve’. Funding agencies note that data paid for with public money should be public information, and the scientific community is recognizing that data can now be shared digitally in ways that were not possible before. To match the growing demand, services are springing up to make it easier to publish research products online and enable other researchers to discover and cite them. Although calls to share data often concentrate on the moral advantages of sharing, the

IV. Summary Writing Secure payment without leaving a trace Computer scientist Andy Rupp, member of the “Signaling Code and Security” working group, is always surprised about lacking problem awareness: only few users are aware of the fact that by using payment systems they disclose in detail how and what they consume or which routes they have taken. To prevent control of the accounts by dishonest users, customer data and account balances of payment are usually carried out with the help of a central database. In every payment deal, the customer is identified and the details of her/his deal are transmitted to the central database. This repeated identification process produces a data trace that might be misused by the provider or third parties. The expert has now presented the basics of an “electronic purse” that works by unknown names, but prevents misuse at the same time. The “black-box addition plus” (BBA+) code system developed by them transfers all necessary account data to the card used or the smartphone and guarantees their secrets with the help of signaling code methods. At the same time, BBA+ offers security guarantees for the operator of the payment system: The code system guarantees a correct account balance and is mathematically constructed such that the identity of the user is disclosed as soon as the attempt is made to pay with a controlled account. “Our new code system guarantees privacy and security for customers during offline operation as well,” Andy Rupp says. “This is needed for ensuring the payment system’s suitability for daily use. Think of a subway doorway or a payment bridge. There you may have no internet connection at all or it is very slow.” Also its high efficiency makes the code system suited for everyday use: During first test runs, researchers completed payments within about one second. ①when customers use payment systems, most of them don’t realize the fact that by doing so, they risk( take the risk of ) losing privacy. ②Researchers have now developed a secure system called BBA+, which works anonymously and avoids misuses as well. ③moreover ( apart from / besides the security of privacy), it also proves to be efficient for daily use.(47 words) 【2018—崇明区一模】 IV.
