A

At 39 weeks pregnant most women would only be thinking of racing to hospital. But not Amber Miller, who set off to run the Chicago Marathon while expecting her second child any day.

As she neared the final stage of the race, she began to feel pain in the stomach. But the determined athlete managed to cross the finish line in 6 hours and 25 minutes.

Unbelievably the Chicago race was not even baby June's first marathon —Miller ran the Wisconsin Marathon earlier this year, four months pregnant. She also ran another marathon when she was about four months pregnant with her son, Caleb.

Although there was extra weight, the seasoned runner's time was just 3 hours off her personal best.

Miller began to feel pain near the end of the race, but she was not sure if it was labor (分娩), because she typically feels some pain when she runs while pregnant. After her race her husband drove her to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where she gave birth to the healthy 7 pounds, 13 ounce baby.

Miller decided to run because she and her husband had already signed up for the race. The athletic mother said she experienced an enthusiastic welcome from crowds as she ran along. But the devoted runner, who had completed eight marathons, admitted that she did get a few strange looks along the course.

“I know what I can handle. This is something I've been doing for a long time,” the experienced marathon runner said.

June was born at 10:29 p.m. on Sunday night after seven hours' labor. “She's absolutely perfect,” Miller said. “We are extremely happy, but very tired.”

After her surprising double achievement, Miller says she is planning to take some time off to concentrate on being a full-time mom.

For most caffeine (咖啡因) consumers, its chief benefit is that it helps you get more done. This is what makes it unusual, says Stephen Braun, author of Buzz:The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine.

“Its appeal is that it helps u s earn more money,” he adds. “What makes it different from other drugs is that it's used as a productivity tool — not for pleasure.”

Many of history's creative minds have also been associated with a large amount of caffeine consumption.

According to one biographer, the French novelist and playwright Balzac drank as many as 50 cups of coffee a day. “Were it not for coffee, one could not write, which is to say one could not live,” he once insisted.

For seven years, the film-maker David Lynch ate at the same L os Angeles diner every day, drinking up to seven sweetened cups of coffee “with lots of sugar” in one sitting, which he said would guarantee that “lots of ideas” arrived.

Ludwig van Beethoven was said to have painstakingly counted out exactly 60 coffee beans per cup when he brewed (煮) coffee.

Perhaps recent tales of caffeine excess featured the singer Robbie Williams, who reportedly consumed 36 cups of black coffee and 20 cans of Red Bull a day.

It is the routine task itself, as much as the stimulant (刺激的) effects of caffeine, that makes the process so important, says Mason Currey, author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work.“A lot of artists use the process of making coffee as a gateway to the creative process,” he adds. “You need to get into the right mindse t to do that sort of work, and the preparation process provides a focus.”

One problem with attempting to control caffeine, says Braun, is that it affects everyone differently —it is impossible to work out a “safe” limit that works for everyone. “Eventuall y, you have to become your own scientist — there isn't an alternative to careful self-experimentation,” he says.

B. improving work efficiency

C. helping people to relax

D. stimulating people

A. most artists like drinking coffee

D. drinking coffee makes artists become more successful

根据第三段“Many of history's creative minds have also been associated with a large amount of caffeine consumption”和下文对这几位名人的描述可知,他们都通过喝咖啡来获得创意与灵感。故选C项。

7.What leads to the artists' creative process according to Mason Currey?

A. Getting a good mindset.

B. Drinking the coffee.

C. Being lost in thought.

D. Brewing the coffee.

根据倒数第二段中的“A lot of artists use the process of making coffee as a gateway to the creative process”可知,Mason Currey 认为正是制作咖啡的过程帮助艺术家进入创作的状态,故选D项。

8.What does Braun advise us to do in the end?

A. To drink less coffee.

B. Never to take more coffee than you need.

C. Never to limit caffeine use.

D. To work out a safe level of caffeine use.

Unit 1 Friendship Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2017·广州综合测试二) Mature-age university students are annoying, I know. I understand that when you're 18 or 19, and already know everything, there's no need to do the readings or show up prepared for class. I also understand that there are these old people in class who should be doing other things—maybe retiring, or gardening in the backyard. They are eagerly asking questions (or worse, answering them) and generally loud. I understand because I used to be one of them. I dropped out of high school in Year 11 and after playing guitar in a band for a few years, I spent the next ten years working different jobs. Then a friend, who thought I was wasting my life, suggested I enrol at his university. Although afraid, I eventually took a university preparation course and a year later became a 35-year-old university freshman. Like many mature-age students, after completing my degree, I continued studying and eventually attained my PhD. Now I'm a lecturer at Toronto University in Canada. In fact, I have just finished preparing a group of mature-age students to annoy next year's young first years. My students come from many different backgrounds. But they all share an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning. I know they are ridiculous and show up to class with folders full of readings, minds overflowing with ideas and concepts they want to discuss. I was the same. But, contrary to the stereotype of the annoying mature-age students occupying the airtime in class, most don't want to control the discussion. They're likely to be waiting, counting away the seconds silently in the hope that someone will want to talk about all of these amazing ideas we're learning about. Only after waiting for younger voices to speak (but which often remain silent) do they begin talking. Speaking for myself, I love students who come prepared and ready to discuss stuff. So let's celebrate all of those “annoying” mature-age students. 1.According to the article, a mature-age student is a person ________. A.who behaves like an adult B.studying for a higher degree C.not yet qualified to enter university D.who starts university at an older age 答案与解析:D 推理判断题。 2.In the first paragraph, the author ________. A.shows that he is opposed to mature-age students B. describes the problems mature-age students create C. makes fun of the attitude held by many young students D. explains why many teachers dislike mature-age students 答案与解析:C 推理判断题。

Leadership i s the most significant word in today’s competitive business environment because it directs the manager of a business to focus inward on their personal abilities and style. Experts on l eadership will quickly point out that “how things get done” influences the success of the outcomes and indicates a right way and a wrong way to do things. When a noted leader on the art of management, Peter Drucker, coined the phrase“Management is doing th ings right; leadership is doing the right things”, he was seeking to clarify the distinctions he associates with the terms. When Stephen Covey, founder and director of the Leadership Institute, explored leadership styles in the past decade, he focused on the habits of a great number of highly effective individuals. His Seven Habits of Highly Effective People became a popular bestseller very quickly. His ideas forced a reexamination of the early leadership example, which centered on the feature that was found in the character ethic(道德准则) and the personality ethic. The former ethic suggested success was founded on modesty, loyalty, courage, patience and so on. The personality ethic suggested it was one’s attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude. In contrast to each of these ideas, Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments. To achieve a desired vision for your business, it is essential that you have a personal vision of where you are headed and what you value. Business leadership means that managers need to “put first things first,” which implies that before leading others, you need to be clear on your own values, abilities, and strengths and be seen as trustworthy. 1.

如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

1.From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold. Why can’t we st op the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives wit hout the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.
