The First Day of the New School Year

Yesterday was the first day of the new school year. Everything went well.

I was so happy to see my friends again.

Mary ran 100 metres in eighteen seconds last year. Now she can do it in fifteen seconds. She is faster now.

John was 55 kg and now he is lighter. He exercised and swam a lot.

The North Wind and the Sun

The north wind and the sun are good friends. But one day they quarrel

about something.

“All right!”so the north wind begins to blow. But the harder the wind blows, the tighter the man holds his hat and coat. The wind can?t make him take them off.

“It is my turn now,” the sun says. So the sun comes out and shines down warmly upon the man.

The man feels hot. He takes off his hat first, and then even his coat. “That?s enough! You are stronger than I,” the wind says.（练淑英）

The Biggest Animal in the World

The biggest animal in the world lives in the ocean. It?s the blue whale. How big are blue whales? They can be 31 metres long. They can weigh 136000 kg. They are bigger than any other animal—even dinosaurs. Blue whales are not fish. They are mammals. This means they breathe air and their babies drink milk. They can stay underwater for an hour. What do they eat? They are very big but they don?t eat sharks or dolphins. They eat very small fish.

Do they swim slowly? No, they don?t. Then can swim 48 kilometres an hour.

Blue whales are also the loudest animal on the Earth. They make very loud low sounds. Their sounds can travel hundreds of kilometers.

Two Friends and a Bear

One day two young men are walking in a big forest. One is fat, and the other is thin. “We are good friends. We must help each other. If we meet any beast, I?ll help you,” the thin man says.

“I?ll help you, too,” the fat one says. They walk on. After a while they hear a great noise. It is a big bear. It is coming this way.

The two young men run away quickly. One of them climbs up a tree, and hides among the leaves. He forgets all about his friend. What about the fat one? He is too fat to climb up a tree. So he throws himself on the ground, closes his eyes, and pretends to be dead. “The bear will think that I?ll dead,” he thinks to himself.

Soon the bear comes up to the fat man, and even puts its nose to his mouth and ears. The fat man holds his breath.

The bear thinks he is dead, so it goes away, because bears never touch the dead. The man in the tree comes down. With a smile he asks his friends, “The bear puts its nose so close to your ears. What does it say to you?”The friend answers, “The bear says, …Don?t trust your friend. He runs away from you when you need his help most.”

The word “day” has tw o meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning（旋转）of the earth. At the equator（赤道）day and night are sometimes the same length（长度）. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o?clock in the morning and sets at 6 o?clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted（倾斜）toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere（半球）gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. George Washington and a Thief

Once a man stole one of George Washington?s horse . Washington went with a policeman to get back the horse.. But the man didn?t give the horse to Washington .He said that it was his horse.

Washington placed his hands over the eyes of the horse and said to the man, “If this is your horse, you must tell us in which eye he is blind.”

“In the right eye!” the man said.

Washington took his hand from the right eye of the horse and showed the policeman that the horse was not blind in the right eye.

“Oh, I made a mistake ,”said the man. “He is blind in the left eye.”

Washington then took his hand from the left eye of the horse. It was not blind in the left eye, either.

“I made another mistake,” said the neighbour.

Four Seasons

Summer comes after spring. It is the hottest season in the year. It lasts from June to August . People try to find a cool place then. They always go swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers.

Autumn is the harvest season. It gets cool. Farmers begins to gather in food. They are busy from September to November.

The coldest season of the year is winter. It?s from about December to February. The days are short and the nights are long . It snows sometimes and that makes children happy. They make a snowman and dance round it. They go skating as well. （朱聪）

Asking the Way

Mike is travelling around the country in his car. One evening he is driving along a road and looking for a small hotel. Then he sees an old man at the side of the road. He stops his car and says to the old man, “I want to go to the Sun Hotel. Do you know it?”

“Yes ,” the old man says. “I?ll show you the way.” He gets into Mike?s car, and they drive off. They drive for about twelve miles. When they come to a small house, the old man says, “Stop here.” Mike stops and looks at the house . “But this isn?t a hotel,” he says to the old man. “No ,”the old man answers. “This is my house . And now I?ll show you the way to the Sun Hotel. Turn around and go back nine miles. Then you?ll see the hotel on the left.”（朱聪）

A Canadian

John is a Canadian. He lives in a tall building in the city of Toronto. There are eighteen floors in the building, and he lives on the

fifteen floor. He uses a lift to go up and down.

John works very hand. He goes to work early. Every day he gets out of the lift. Then he walks to a bus stop. The bus stop is in front of a station. It is about two hundred meters from his home.

He usually catches the number 11 bus to work, but sometimes he goes by train. John works in a factory about ten kilometers from his home. His work starts at half past eight ,and finishes at a quarter to five. He gets back home at a quarter past five. He gets into the lift, and goes up to the twelfth floor. A party

It is Christmas, and there is a big party in the house. Guests come and go, but the party goes on. Then the bell rings. Several people shout, “Come in !” And a small man opens the front door and comes in. Nobody knows him but the host goes to meet him and takes him to have a drink. The man sits there for an hour and drinks happily. Then suddenly he stops and looks at his host. “ You know,” he says, “ Nobody invites me to this party.

I don?t know you. I don?t know your wife and I don?t know any of your guests. My wife and I want to go out in our car, but one of your guests?cars is in front of our gate, so I come here to find him and my wife is

A Great Superman

We all know Superman can do everything. He is always ready to help the people in trouble.

One day, there was a big fire in a building. A little boy was in it. Superman saw it and flew into the building to save the body. At last, Superman saved the boy and took him down to the ground safely. The boy?s parents gave him many thanks. The people around all think Superman is very great.（练淑英）

Sea Turtles

Turtles can live in the sea and they can also live in fresh water on the land. All turtles have thick shells. The shell is a turtle?s home.

Male(雄性的) sea turtles never leave the sea. Female（雌性的）sea turtles crawl onto land and find a place to lay their eggs. Sometimes the place is very far from the sea. The female sea two hundred eggs at one time. Then she covers the hole up with sand. After all this, the female sea turtle walks back into the sea and never comes back to see the baby sea turtles.

After the baby sea turtles come out from the eggs, they know where the sea is. So they hurry into the sea.

A turtle has no teeth, but its jaws (颚) are strong and sharp. So if you catch a turtle, do not put your finger near its mouth.（练淑英）

Faster and heavier

Some animals are fast and some are slow. Turtles are slow. Snails are slower than turtles. Chickens are faster than turtles but they are slower than elephants. Giraffes are faster than chickens and elephants. People are slower than giraffes but they are faster than elephants.

Some animals are also very big and heavy. Ostriches are heavy. Giraffes are taller and heavier than ostriches. Whales are heavier than elephants and elephants are heavier than giraffes.（练淑英）

Some British and American people like to invite friends and colleagues for a meal at home. You should not be upset (心烦意乱) if your English friends don?t invite you home. It doesn?t mean they don?t like you.

Dinner parties usually start between 7 and 8 p.m., and end at about 11. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It?s polite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a present.

Do you want to be extra (特别地) polite? Say how much you like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember—not to ask how

much things cost.

You?ll probably start the meal with soup, or something small as a “starter” (酵母), then you?ll have meat or fish with vegetables, and then a dessert (甜食), followed by coffee. It?s polite to finish everything on yo ur plate and to take more if you want it. Some people eat bread with their meal, but not everyone does.

Before they take out their cigarettes after the meal, most people usually ask, “Do you mind if I smoke here?”

Did you enjoy the evening? Call your hosts the next day, or write them a short “thank you” letter. Perhaps it seems funny to you, but British and American people say, “thank you, thank you, and thank you” all the time. （黄旋芳）

We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn?t even li ft her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and asthe nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “ Very dirty

floors.” “Yes, I?m glad they?ve finally decided to clean them.” The nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “ But aren?t your wo rking late?” Mum just pushed harder, each swipe（拖一下）of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned to writing in the big book.

After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you. ”Outside, Mum told me, “Dagmar is fine, No fever.” “You saw her, Mum?” “ Of course.
