A

When I was seven,my father gave me a Timex,my first watch.I loved it,wore it for years, and haven’t had another one since it stopped ticking a decade ago. Why?Because I don’t need one.I have a mobile phone and I’m always near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices(装置) tell the time—which is why,if you look around, you’ll see lots of empty wrists;sales of watches to young adults have been going down since 2007.

But while the wise have realized that they don’t need them, others—apparently including some distinguished men of our time—are spending total fortunes on them.Brands such as Rolex,Patek Philippe and Breitling command shocking prices,up to £250,000 for a piece.

This is ridiculous.Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars.Expensive clothes hang better than cheap clothes. But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches.Expensive watches come with extra functions—but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 metres into the sea or need to find your direction in the area around the South Pole?So why pay that much of five years’ school fees for watches that allow you to do these things?

If justice was done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered how to make accurate watches for a five-pound note.Instead the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid of millions of pounds’worth of advertising,as a message about the man wearing it.Rolexes are for those who spend their weekends climbing icy mountains;a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family;a Breitling suggests you like to pilot planes across the world.

Watches are now classified as “investments(投资)”.A 1994 Patek Philippe recently sold for nearly £350,000,while 1960s Rolexes have gone from £15,000 to £30,000 plus in a year. But a watch is not an investment. It’s a toy for self-satisfaction,a matter of fashion.Prices may keep going up—they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when fashion moves on,the owner of that £350,000 beauty will suddenly find his pride and joy is no more a good investment than my childhood Timex.

21The sales of watches to young people have fallen because they.

A.have other devices to tell the time

B.think watches too expensive

C.prefer to wear an iPod

D.have no sense of time

答案:A

由第一段最后一句“All these devices tell the time—which is why,if you look around, you’ll see lots of empty wrists...”

22It seems ridiculous to the writer that.

A.people dive 300 metres into the sea

B.expensive clothes sell better than cheap ones

C.cheap cars don’t run as fast as expensive ones

D.expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sell

从第三段第三句“But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches.”

23What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?

A.It targets rich people as its potential customers.

B.It’s hard for the industry to beat its competitors.

C.It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising.

D.It’s easy for the industry to reinvent cheap watches.

答案:A

24Which would be the best title for the passage?

A.Timex or Rolex?

B.My Childhood Timex

C.Watches?Not for Me!

D.Watches—a Valuable Collection

B

26Which of the following is TRUE about the Winners Club?

A.Special gifts are ready for parents.

B.The bank opens only on work days.

C.Services are convenient for its members.

D.Fees are necessary for the account keeping.

27The Winners Club provides magazines which .

A.encourage spending

B.are free to all teenagers

C.are full of adventure stories

D.help to make more of your money

根据倒数第二段中“Along with your regular report, you will receive a FREE magazine full of good ideas to make even more of your money.”

28If you want to be a member of the Club, you must .

A.be an Internet user

B.be permitted by your parent

C.have a big sum of money

D.be in your twenties

根据最后一段“You will have to get permission from your parent...” 该服务介绍第三点中提到办理业务有多种形式,其中包括使用网络,但不是必须的,所以A项错误;由第一点中“You’re no millionaire so we don’t expect you to pay large fees.”

C

An allowance(零用钱) is an important tool for teaching kids how to budget, save and make their own decisions.Children remember and learn from mistakes when their own dollars are lost or spent foolishly.

How large an allowance is appropriate?Experts say there is not right amount.Actual amounts differ from area to area, and from family to family.

To set an appropriate allowance for your child, work up a weekly budget.Allow for entertainment expenditures (花费) such as movies and snack.Next, include everyday expenses such as lunch money, bus fare, school supplies.“If you make the child responsible for these bills,” says Josephine Swanson,a consumer specialist,“he or she will learn to budget for necessary expenditures.”

Finally, add some extra money to make saving possible. If you can, keep your child’s allowance in line with that of his or her friends.A child whose purchasing power falls away below his or her peers’can feel left out.

It can be tough, but avoid excusing your children when they make a mistake with their allowance. When Brooke Stephens was ten and growing up in Jacksonville, her mother gave her $5 a week,$1.75 of which was for bus fare and lunch.“If you lose money,” Brooke’s mother told her,“you walk home.”

One week the girl spent all her allowance in a candy store, and then she called home for a ride.“Mom made me walk home,” recalls Stephens, now a financial planner in Brooklyn.“At first I was angry. But I finally realized that she was trying to teach me an important lesson.”

Experts advise an allowance should not be tied directly to a child’s daily chores(琐事).Kids should help around the house not because they get paid for it but because they share responsibilities as members of family. You might, however, pay a child for doing extra jobs at home. That can develop his or her initiative(主动性).

29What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.How to develop a child’s initiative.

B.How to work up a budget.

C.How to teach a child to save money.

D.How to teach a child to manage money matters.

30It can be inferred from the passage that if a child is given an allowance,he or she

may .

A.spend all the money very soon

B.be spoiled and finally ruined

C.lose the money and can not return home

D.feel responsible and careful about money

31The underlined part “his or her peers” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to .

A.his or her friends

B.his or her brothers

C.his or her parents

D.his or her teachers

答案:A

由第四段中的“keep your child’s allowance in line with that of his or her friends”判断出A项正确。

32Why does the author mention Brooke Stephens?

A.To question the opinion about pocket money.

B.To compare Stephens with other experts.

C.To explain that parents should be strict when children are developing habits about money.

D.To suggest that pocket money is useless in developing a child’s sense of responsibility.

D

Recently I paid a visit to Harvard University, where there are top class scientists and professors and the best academic system in the world.

I was pretty shocked when I first stepped onto the campus.Well,it’s not really a campus. It’s more like a small town.

Harvard’s main buildings are from the 18th century. They look very old and simple. You might even say they’re a little shabby(破旧的).They don’t fit the modern idea of university at all.The buildings are surrounded by grass and trees,so I felt as if I had walked into a medieval castle. But when I looked across the street, busy shops and in-fashion students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. It creates a strong contrast(对比)and brings a special atmosphere(氛围) to the school.

Our tour guide Gary took us around and told us,“You see this grass field in the center of the school? Here is where they host their graduation ceremony. They just set up tents and benches and have a very simple ceremony.Unbelievable! Who would think the most talented students just graduate on the lawn?”

I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning, along with chirping of the birds,I felt very calm. There were no competitive feelings at all.

Harvard has the world’s first computer in its science center and there are hundreds of high-end computers too.Its religion and the literature departments are also among the best.It is the perfect mix of tradition and new technology. It makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in.

I hope one day I’ll attend my dream school—Harvard.

33According to the article the author was most impressed by .

A.Harvard’s mix of tradition and new technology

B.the classes held on beautiful lawns at Harvard

C.Harvard students not taking their graduation ceremony seriously

D.the feeling of not living in modern society on the campus

答案:A

34What can we conclude from the article?

A.Harvard campus is actually a district of a big city.

B.There are no competitions at Harvard University.

C.Graduation ceremonies are not complex at Harvard.

D.All Harvard buildings date back to the 18th century.

答案:C

解析:根据第二段最后一句“It’s more like a small town”可知它更像是个小镇,因此A项错误;根据常识可知哈佛这种世界一流大学竞争更为激烈,因此B项错误;由第四段中的“They just set up tents and benches and have a very simple ceremony.”可知他们只是设置帐篷和长椅,举行一个简单的仪式,因此可知C项正确;根据第三段第一句“Harvard’s main buildings are from the 18th century.”

35Which word can be used to describe the Harvard campus?

A.Modern.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2a3861190.html,petitive.

C.Peaceful.

D.Splendid.

Many people set a goal to make a change in their life, but not everyone knows how to achieve it.The following practical tips on goal setting can help make it easier to set and reach goals to

make a change in your life.36.When it comes to making a change, people who succeed are those who set realistic and specific goals.“I’m going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines.”is a much easier goal than “I’m going to do more for the environment.”,and that makes it easier to stick with.

Being patient is important. It takes time for a change to become an established habit.37. That’s because your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you’re doing is part of your regular routine. So you should have enough practice.

Repeating a goal makes it stick.38.By doing this you can remind yourself of what you want and what you’re working for.(Writing it down works too.)Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen.

39.The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself—you have to do it because you want it,not because a girlfriend, boyfriend coach, parent,or someone else wants you to.

Roadblocks don’t mean failure.Slip-ups are actually part of the learning process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking.40.But that’s OK—it’s normal to mess up or give up a few times when you are trying to make a change. So remember that everyone slips up and don’t beat yourself up about it.Just remind yourself to get back on track.

A.Pleasing other people doesn’t work.

B.Say your goal out loud each morning.

C.Specific and realistic goals work best.

D.It may take a few tries to reach a goal.

E.You can achieve your goals in many ways.

F.It will probably take a couple of months before anything changes.

G.If you don’t know what you want, you will never achieve your goals.

A

I began working in journalism(新闻工作) when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.

With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST.When it was suppertime,I walked back home.

“How many did you sell,my boy?” my mother asked.

“None.”

“Where did you go?”

“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”

“What did you do?”

“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”

“You just stood there?”

“Didn’t sell a single one?”

“My God,Russell!”

Uncle Allen put in,“Well,I’ve decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币).It was the first nickle I earned.

Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman.I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence,and persuade them by saying that no one,no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.

One day,I told my mother I’d changed my mind.I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.

“If you think you can change your mind like this,”she replied,“you’ll become a good-for-nothing.”She insisted that,as soon as school was over,I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines.Whenever I said no,she would scold me.

My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

21Why did the boy start his job young?

A.He wanted to be famous in the future.

B.The job was quite easy for him.

C.His mother had high hopes for him.

D.The competition for the job was fierce.

22From the dialogue between the boy and his mother,we learn that the mother was .

A.excited

B.interested

C.ashamed

D.disappointed

23What did the mother do when the boy wanted to give up?

A.She forced him to continue.

B.She punished him.

C.She gave him some money.

D.She changed her plan.

答案:A

24What does the underlined phrase “this battle”(the last paragraph) refer to?

A.The war between the boy’s parents.

B.The arguing between the boy and his mother.

C.The quarrel between the boy and his customers.

Advertising is the key to the success of any business. To ensure a long and lasting success,a business must advertise in some way.

It has been said that the best form of advertising is word of mouth advertising. It’s free and most people believe https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2a3861190.html,ually,word of mouth advertising comes from satisfied customers that wish to share their experience with their friends, family and co-workers about a product, and in turn new customers come to the business.

While word of mouth is a wonderful and free way to advertise,it isn’t the “be all end all” of advertising.Advertising on television, the radio, and printing is still a very effective advertising method, but the method is quite expensive and not suitable for the small businesses.

A more economical but effective way is to advertise online. The Internet is such an important part of daily life that it is hard not to advertise on it.The number of ways to advertise online is endless. There are several types of e-mail marketing campaigns, like link advertising and websites.Now,e-mail marketing campaigns are more popular than traditional postal mail marketing, which is slow and ineffective.

Many business owners use strategic networking to advertise their businesses. It’s a way for business owners to meet each other, get the word out about their companies, and even to enlarge their business fields.

One new kind of successful advertising is through social networking. It’s much like strategic networking in that it’s usually free and done by meeting and discussing products. However, social networking is done through modern media, such as websites, blogs, and the Internet. Both of them are highly effective.

Whichever method of advertising is used,a business must use long-time advertising campaigns to keep itself successful.

Q:Mr.Paul Tough, what made you want to write How Children Succeed?

A:In 2008,I published my first book Whatever It https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2a3861190.html,ter I realized I still had a lot of questions about what really happens in childhood. How Children Succeed is an attempt to answer those questions:Why do certain children succeed while other children fail? Why is it,exactly, that poor children are less likely to succeed? What can we all do to guide more kids toward success?

Q:What did you learn about kids growing up in poverty(贫穷)?

A:The traditional wisdom is that the big problem for low-income kids is that they don’t get enough cognitive stimulation(认知激励) early on.In fact, what seems to have more of an effect is the chaotic environments that many low-income kids grow up in.

Q:How did writing this book affect you as a parent?

A:It made me more relaxed as a parent. When my son was born,I was very much caught up in the idea of childhood as a race. Now I’m less concerned about my son’s reading and counting
