Sir Edmund Hillary was born in 1919 and grew up in Auckland. Hillary was educated at Tuakau Primary School and then Auckland Grammar School. He finished primary school two years early and at high school achieved average marks. He was smaller than his classmates there and was very shy so he buried himself in his books and daydreams of a life filled with adventure. After climbing the 8,850 meter peak, Hillary led a number of expeditions (探险) to the South Pole and devoted his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal’s Khumbu region.He spent two years in India, and founded the Himalayan Trust in 1964. The Trust helped build hospitals and schools. He was made an honorary Nepalese citizen in 2003.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Air pollution is a major risk factor for heart disease, and women with diabetes (糖尿病) may be more likely to be influenced by its effects than others, a long-term U.S. study said Wednesday.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that women with diabetes who are exposed (暴露) to air pollution for long periods may have a much higher risk for heart disease.

“We didn’t expect diabetes to be the strongest factor in determining susceptibility(敏感性),” said the lead author Jaime Hart, an epidemiologist at the Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Ha rvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

“We looked at age, family history of heart disease, weight, smoking status and areas of the country but diabetes was the most consistent across diseases and across different size fractions of particulate matter (PM),” Hart said.

The research team explored data from more than 100,000 participants in a long-term study called the Nurses’ Health Study, looking at rates of heart disease, specifically rates of stroke.

They assessed long-term exposure to three different sizes of particulate matter air pollution from 1989 to 2006: Fine particulate pollutant smaller than 2.5 thousandths of a millimeter in diameter (PM2.5), PM10 and PM2.5-10. PM10 includes both PM2.5 and PM2.5-10.

While all women had small increases in risk of heart events with more air pollution exposure, the increased risk was statistically significant for women with diabetes.

According to the team, an increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air pollution in PM2.5, PM2.5-10 and PM 10 will raise a woman’s risk of heart disease by 44 percent, 17 percent and 19 percent, separately, if she had type 2 diabetes.

The team found that these effects were greater among women 70 and older and obese women.

Since the study participants were mostly white women of middle- and upper-socioeconomic status, further research will be needed to determine if these patterns are also seen in men and in racially and socioeconomically diverse populations, they added.

The first of the 2015 Nobel Prizes has been announced. The treatment is based on a herb used in Chinese traditional medicine, called sweet wormwood.

Tu got the award for three “firsts”. She was the first to brin g artemisinin to her project team, the first to extract (提炼) a form of artemisinin that can altogether prevent malaria, and the first to complete a clinical trial, according to Zhang Boli, director of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

The committee said the discoveries had given the world powerful new ways to fight malaria which affects hundreds of millions of people every year. The committee added that, “The results in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable.”

W: Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan, and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really

have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year.As soon as I arrived, I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying—they all spoke so quickly!

I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy the things you need.
