SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS

The following is a brief summary of the new paragraphs in the Standard for Relocatable Power Taps,

UL 1363, which have a future Effective Date of July 27, 2005 and the action that may be required to determine compliance.

Paragraphs General Subject and Comment

1.9 This standard does not cover RPTs intended for use with medical equipment

as defined by Article 517 of the National Electrical Code for Health Care

Facilities. RPTs intended for such use shall comply with the requirements of

the Standard for Safety of Medical Electrical Equipment, Part 1: General

Requirements, UL 60601-1 and the Standard for Safety Requirements for

Medical Electrical Systems, IEC 60601-1-1.

38.13 RPT that incorporates a molded-on or assembled-on hospital grade

attachment plug or receptacles shall be marked with the following or equivalent

wording: “CAUTION: Do not use in relocatable power taps in General Patient

Care Areas or Critical Patient Care Areas. They have not been evaluated for

use where Article 517 of the National Electrical Code requires Hospital Grade

components.”

38.14 The caution wording identified in paragraph 38.13 shall have minimum letter

height, be clearly visible after mounting of the RPT or provided on a tag.

38.15 The cord tag shall be tear-resistant, comply with the Permanence of Cord Tag

Test, Section 34B and permanently affixed to the cord.

38.16 The cord tag shall be a hang-type secured to the cord by a plastic strap or be

flag-type secured to the cord by adhesive back wrapped around the cord. Section 34B Section 34B (Paragraphs 34B.1.1, 34B.2.1, 34B2.2, 34B.2.3, 34B.2.4, 34B.2.5, 34B.3.1)

An RPT provided with a Cord Tag is to be investigated for permanence by

exposing the tag to different environmental conditions and mechanical

durability. The performance criteria’s are identified in the individual

paragraphs.

Section 39 Section 39 (Paragraph 39.1)

An RPT that incorporates hospital grade fittings shall include in the

instructions, packaging, or other literature accompanying the RPT the

following or equivalent Marking. “CAUTION: Do not use in General Patient

Care Areas or Critical Patient Care Areas. This relocatable power tap has not

being evaluated for use where Article 517 of the National Electrical Code

requires Hospital Grade components.”

Paragraphs General Subject and Comment

38.12 An RPT shall be marked to indicate that it is not intended to be plugged into

another RPT, with the word “CAUTION” and the following or equivalent “Risk

of Electric Shock. Do not plug into another releasable power tap.”
