Touch Taiwan 2012 – New Opportunities and Possibilities

Exhibition Overview

From August 29 to 31 at the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei, ‘International Touch Panel and Optical Film Exhibition 2012’, Touch Taiwan 2012 for short, the exhibition only for touch panel, was held in Taiwan for the first time.

About 270 companies participated such as TFT-LCD, touch panel module, touch panel sensor, touch panel film, touch panel manufacturing equipments, and cover glass companies, and promoted their products for 3 days. 1) Direct bonding process using OCR, 2) the emergence of GF touch panel, which uses one sheet of film sensor, and string G2 touch panel, 3} various film sub-materials such as touch panel AR, and shatterproof, and 4) the emergence of carbon nanotube and graphene, ITO alternative materials, were significant in the exhibition.

Major Exhibition Introduction

AUO

AUO introduced G2 and photo sensor touch panel throu gh the exhibition. The below is 65” photo sensor touch panel, introduced to target electronic chalkboard market. It has the resolution of 1920 x 1080.

In a view of AUO, 1) TFT line-utilized G2 and 2) Total Solution that supplied LCD and touch panel together by bonding them are the parts where it has relative competitive edge over touch panel companies. Thus, add-on type touch panels AUO introduced at the exhibition are all G2 and in terms of size, it introduced 27” for AIO PC, 10.1”, 11.6”, and 13.3” for notebook, and 4.7” for smartphones.

AUO introduced 27” G2 (OGS) for AIO PC and monitor products according to Window8 OS that will be released in the second half. The product manufactured with sheet process, uses Corning IOX-FS glass, and has the strength over 600Mps.

10.1”, 11.6”, 13.3” are G2 touch panels for notebook. 11.6”and 13.3” focus on the strength reinforcement using Corning IOX-FS glass, and 10.1” uses soda-lime glass.

In smartphone touch panel, G2 touch panels, manufactured by 2 types of processes, cell and sheet, were introduced. Sheet process G2 product showed off the strength over 620Mpa and 0.8mm narrow bezel, and Cell process G2 product showed off the strength over 720Mpa on the 2.5D curved.

CMI

Because CMI did not promote touch panel as a main at the exhibition, it felt inadequate compare to AUO and CPT in terms of viewing. It introduced automotive color filter on-cell touch, AIO PC G2, GFF, and GG touch panels. In particular, it highlighted OCR/OCA direct bonding.

For CMI automotive color filter on-cell products, 6.5” and 8” products were introduced; the resolution is 800x480, and support 10-point multitouch.

There is no new technology in GG and GFF touch panels, but because CMI can maximize its sales if it can perform TFT-LCD, touch panel, and bonding process together, it highlighted Total Solution, which bonds its TFT-LCD and touch panel and then supplies them together.

CPT

CPT introduced various touch panels focusing on the niche market such as photo sensor, automotive GG touch panel, 3D on-cell touch, and TFT on-cell touch at the exhibition.

CPT also introduced automotive 6.95” GG touch pa nel since it produces and supplies automotive TFT-LCD. Touch panel is getting certified by major customers, and if it gets certified, it will be supplied with TFT-LCD.

It is on-cell touch panel newly developed by CPT for 3D LCD panel. CPT produced Touch on Barrier 3D panel to prevent external attaching-type touch panel from reducing 3D effect, while putting touch sensor on barrier layer.

3.5” color filter on-cell touch panel developed by CPT for low-cost smartphones and it supports 4-point multitouch. Since it is competitively priced than adding touch panel to the current 3.5” TFT-LCD, in terms of price, it is expected to have a good result in the low-cost smartphone market.

21.5” photo sensor in-cell product, which was introduced at the Display Taiwan exhibition in June, was introduced again. The product uses iDTI Photo Sensor solution, and will be mass produced from the early next year.

Flexible EPD flexible glass substrate with the thickness of 0.1mm was also introduced. Since CPT is currently supplying EPD TFT backplane to E-Ink, it will be supplied to E-Ink. It is unusual that CPT is researching and developing glass substrate to replace 0.4mm-thickness ITO sensor glass in GG touch panel and the mass production plan of 0.1mm ITO sensor glass-using GG touch panel has not scheduled yet.

GIS & CNTouch

GIS and CNTouch, veiled touch panel subsidiary of Hon Hai, debuted in Taiwan. Hon Hai received attention from the industry by establishing a touch panel subsidiary, Ye Cheng (業成), in 2011. GIS is a Taiwanese Corporation of Ye Cheng and it specializes in the processing after bonding with touch panel. Touch sensor and cover glass are mainly supplied by CMI and G-Tech, companies of Hon Hai Group.

GIS introduced narrow bezel and bonding with 3D cover glass using CTP printing method, and Ag nano wire-used touch panel products at the exhibition. GF touch panel was also exhibited together.

CNTouch introduced resistive film and capacitive touch panel applications by receiving carbon nanotube-related technology from ‘Foxconn Nanotechnology Research Center (TFNRC),’ carbon nanotube institute established by Foxconn and China’s Tsinghua

University.

According to CNTouch, if sensor layer of touch panel is replaced with carbon nanotube of ITO, touch error due to water can be prevented, and high-durability, free of noise coming from LCM, and flexible product can be made. In addition, CNTouch introduced curved Touch Wiring Pad, which took advantage of carbon nanotube, and flexible touch notebook keyboard.

Henghao

Henghao is a touch panel company established in December 2012, and a subsidiary of Compal Computer, the Taiwanese notebook SI company. Henghao recently took over all personnel and facilities as it integrated with SWENC, one of the Compal touch subsidiaries.

Henghao actively promoted SITO type GF touch panel using single film sensor through the exhibition. Henghao said GF touch panel is the best add-on touch panel that has advantages of both GG and GFF, and overcomes all the disadvantages, and supply price is also slightly cheaper than GFF.

Acute Touch Technology

Surface capacitive, which has been only used in medium-large type, was developed to small smartphone size and exhibited by Acute

Touch Technology, a Taiwanese company. A-point touch is available and it is 10~20% cheaper than projective.

Nitto Denko

Nitto Denko exhibited various film sub-materials related to touch panel such as OCA, OCR, ITO film, transparent conductive film, shatterproof film, protective film, and polarizing film at the Touch Taiwan 2012 exhibition.

In particular, employees, who described their products at the booth, had accurate understanding of technical and structural development direction of touch panel and it was impressive that they were describing how Nitto Denko products can benefit touch panel companies.

Hitachi Chemical introduced touch panel bonding materials, OCA and OCR, bonding tape of sensor and FPC, ACF, ITO film, and cover glass protective film.

Kyoritsu exhibited various resin products used in touch panel and LCD such as touch panel bonding OCR. However, you could feel the increase in OCR demand in accordance with the improvement in visibility and larger-area of touch panel since it was focusing on promoting OCR.
