A To Face the Music

When someone says, ―Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music‖, it does not mean that he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour(刺耳) music, indeed, but it has to be faced.

The phrase ―to face the music‖ is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said – in 1851 – that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings(侧) to go on stage. After they got their clue(暗示) to go on, they often said, ―It’s time to go to face the music.‖ And that is exactly what they did – face the orchestra which was just below the stage.

An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out.

So, ―to face the music‖ came to mean: having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean – shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Plays are not a new thing. People have been putting them on for thousands of years. Plays first came on the scene in the sixth century B.C．They were put on in Greece.

How did the first plays develop？They were part of festivals to honor the gods. There were games, dancing, and songs sung by a chorus（合唱队）. Then someone got an idea. Instead of just the chorus singing, people could also speak lines to each other. This was the beginning of dialogue. And dialogue is a basic thing of drama.

So the early Greek plays had regular characters and a chorus. The story happened through the main characters. But the chorus explained the action. For instance, one character might treat another cruelly. The chorus might admonish （告诫）the character that the god was not pleased with such behavior.

The stories in the plays were mostly about the gods or famous heroes. These were stories the people already knew. Many

of the characters in these stories were women. But there were no women actors. Both the main characters and the chorus were played by men.

Greek theaters were usually built into hillsides. The stage was at the bottom. The seats rose up the side of the hill. These theaters were often very large. It could be hard to see and hear. Actors wore platform（舞台）shoes. These made them look taller. They also wore tall headdresses and masks. A mask would be painted with a face showing the character’s feelings. It would also have a mouth opening shaped like a funnel（漏斗）. This made the actor’s voice sound louder. There was a small painted building on the stage. It was the week before Christmas, but things were far from happy. Our task was to send as many boxes of food as possible to those in need in one of America’s most dangerous cities: Camden, New Jersey. There were a few people walking around these streets that were lined with broken houses and windows. It was mid-afternoon, but even the bright sun couldn’t warm this place.

Red tickets in the windows marked which houses we were to visit. Our white truck stopped in front of one townhouse and our group knocked on the door. In our arms were boxes filled with meat, bread and other foods to make the best Christmas dinner. Four small faces appeared from behind the curtains and one tired mom answered the door. She seemed embarrassed to be caught in her nightdress with untidy hair. She was in her mid-20s, but her ugly skin and tired eyes increased her years.

She pointed and as we entered the house, I noticed the house they lived in. The children played around, wearing little. There was no Christmas tree or decora-tions. It was so cold, and I found it hard to believe that this was reality for this family. We set the boxes down and the mother held my hand.

―You don’t know what a blessing (幸事) this is to me and my family,‖ she said, crying. ―We are just getting by (勉强生活).‖ I opened my arms and g ave her a hug.

―Happy Holidays!‖ I replied before I headed out of the door. I realized how warm I felt inside.
