Passage 53

For many people the subject of hiccups (嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.

His hiccups began one Sunday lunchtime and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.

Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.

“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”

After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.

“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”

Passage 55

Hundreds of years ago, li fe was harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.

Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.

Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt (被状物) over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.

Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn’t let dirty smoke go in to the air.

We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

Later on, when he starts to build, this estimate (预算) must be corrected and revised (修订).His estimate is based on existing prices, but prices of such things may change, and many other things may happen between the time when he makes the estimate and the time when he builds the house.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault (过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame (受责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.

Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually t hey have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering.

There is another way to help your friends or other nearby people to find you. Give them a signal (信号) by shouting or whistling (吹口哨) three times. Any signal given three times is a call for help.

Keep up shouting or whistling always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They give you two shouts, two whistles, or two gun-shots (枪声). When someone gives you a signal, it is an answer to a call for help.

If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house---cover up to the holes with branches (树枝) with lots of leaves. Make yourself a soft bed with leaves and grass.

What should you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? You would have to leave your little house to look for a river. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back. The most important thing to do when you are lost is—stay in one place.

Section VI

Passage 53

1. 选B。由文中第二段“His hiccups began one Sunday lunchtime and continued day and night for two weeks.” His hiccups lasted fourteen days.

4. 选A。

5. 选A。 文中提到“My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”

Passage 54

1.B。“Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe.”,由starting一词显然可知答案为B。

3.D。答案的出处是“Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV.”一句。

4.A。“German businesses are hoping this new tele shopping will help them sell more things.”,

Passage 55

“One of the biggest is pollution.”

4. D。答案在“Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away…”中。

5. D。综合考虑全文及“Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.”

Passage 56

2. B。短文首段的第三句话:“Your first step will be to find a right piece of land.”(你的第一步就是选好一块合适的地)。

Passage 57

1.A.表示转折关系的“But many people are worried about the weight that comes with these delicious foods.

2.B。答案在第三段的第一句“With proper (合适的) planning, it is p ossible to control your weight.”中。

4.A。“This may help you to keep you from getting too excited before the delicious foods.”

5.B。由“If you have a sweet tooth, try mints and fruits. They do not have fat like cre am and chocolate.”

Passage 58

2.B。“After that, he will advise some treatment, or some medicine.”

4.C。由文章最末一句可知这位绅士是说“象我这样年龄的人开始学吸烟真是不容易”,由“The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette a day.”

Passage 59

2.B。虽然细菌无处不在,但根据“…They are very small and you can’t see them with your eyes, but you can find them w ith a microscope.”

4.B。上句说“在显微镜下观察脏水时会发现其中有许多细菌”,紧接着就说“So your parents will not let you drink dirty water.”,因此,答案是B。

6. D。第二段的“What makes you ill? It is germs.”

Passage 60

1.C。答案就在“…he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.”中。

2.D。“…when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again.”

Passage 61

1.A。“Sit down and stay where you are.”和“Give them a signal by shouting or whistling three times.”

2.D。该题的答案源自“Keep up shouting o r whistling always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun.”

3.C。“They give you two shouts, two whistles, or two gun-shots. When someone gives you a signal, it is an answer to a call for h elp.”

4.D。根据“Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.”

5.B。由文章末句“The most important thing to do when you are lost is—stay in one plac e.”和开头的“…this is what you should do.”

Passage 62

2.B。根据“I was eating with my wife and children.”

3.C。答案即在即在“…she felt that her house was moving.”中。

He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. He left the house with a light heart, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family. “I wish you a Happy New Year.” said Edward, as he was passing on. The man shook his head. “You are not from this country.” said Edward.

Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments. The New York Times used the word "groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon". (1)When was Chang'e-4 sent up? A. In May, 2018. B. On December 8, 2018. C. On January 3, 2019.
