passage and answer the questions. Then, Write down your answers on the Answer Sheet.

Passage A

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

23. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.

A. warmly welcomed at the airport

B. offered a ride to his home

C. treated hospitably at his home

D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

Passage B

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:

“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”

“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”

But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”

I’ve heard that you ar e the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

A. they’ll push you ahead

B. they’ll influence you

C. they’ll cover your shortcomings

D. they’ll help you achieve your goal

28. The musicians’ words at the beginning are written mainly to show ______.

A. the musicians’ living conditions are quite poor

B. people have poor taste in music

C. people have different attitudes towards the same thing

D. young people have greater chances of succeeding

29. By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.

A. improve a lot in making more friends

B. come to the right way of making friends

C. develop a better relationship with your friends

D. arrange the time with your friends properly

Passage A

I came to study in the United States a year ago .Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.

After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.

When Robert Sabuda was eight years old, he looked through a book in his dentist's office and turned the pages quickly. Then he was transported to another dimension (维度) — the three-dimensional world of pop-ups (立体活动图). The book was heavier, thicker —unlike any book he had ever seen. It took his breath away. “When I opened it, I was shocked and pleased when something jumped right off the page,” says Sabuda. “I f orgot all about the dentist.” But he never forgot about pop-ups.

Robert's family and friends began to give him pop-up books for gifts. He took them apart and put them back together to see how they worked. Before long, he began making his own pop-up books and giving them as gifts.

With each pop-up creation, Robert improved his pop-up engineering skills and discovered the value of failing.

“With each failure.” Sabuda says, “I learned a better solution, one that I wouldn't have ever imagined.”Clearly, Sabuda w as on to something special. One of his high school art teachers, Mrs. Lucas, took a special interest in his abilities.

“She taught me how to draw, paint, and make prints,” says Sabuda.

Mrs. Lucas also helped him go to the Pratt Institute, a famous art school in New York City. What Sabuda learned at the Pratt Institute allowed him to continue his exploration of three-dimensional art.

During his third year at Pratt, Sabuda took a summer internship (实习) at a

publishing company, where he learned how children's books are created, and realized what he wanted to do. As part of his job, he opened packages containing the artwork of children's book illustrators (插图画家) such as Barbara Cooney and James Marshall.

“I decided there and then that I wanted to be a children's book illustrator,” Sabuda says. “It was something that made my heart beat faster!”

After college, jobs designing packages and coloring books started him on his way. The rest is pop-up history. If his designs excite the child inside him, Sabuda feels that kids who pick up his books will be just as excited.

B. examining how they worked by himself

A. He thought it was useful.

B. He was afraid of failing.

C. He didn't want to fail at all.

D. He was unconcerned about it.

The priest took her inside. The child was very happy because they found a room for her. She went to bed that night thinking of the children who had no place to sleep or pray in.

Two years later, the girl died there. As her little body was being moved, a worn and red purse was found, which she had found in the rubbish. Inside the purse was 57 cents and a note, written in childish handwriting, which read :“This is to help ma ke the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday school.”

Qi Baishi (1863~1957) is one of the best-known contemporary Chinese artists. His life shows he achieved success by combining talent with hard work.

He was born in a peasant family. At 11 he was sent to learn carpentry Through his work he got to know some local scholars. One of them, Hu Shenyuan, offered to teach him painting and poetry. During this period he earned his living by painting portraits and selling his works. Gradually he developed a reputation as an artist as well as a carpenter. In those years he devoted himself to poetry, calligraphy, and seal-carving. Although he admitted he was a versatile artist, his own criteria of his successes placed poetry first, seal-carving second, calligraphy third, and painting last.

From 1902 to 1916, Qi toured the country five times, and he left his footmarks in many cities, such as Beijing and Hongkong. The trips broadened his vision and changed his style. In 1917 he settled down in Beijing, where he met many artists and scholars, and made friends with Chen Shizeng. Chen advised him not to imitate early masters and to form his own style.

Through long years of practice, Qi Baishi evolved a distinctive personal style.

The subjects of his painting were wide and various, and the flowers, birds, fish, prawns (虾), and insects he painted are most admired by his public. To improve his technique of painting prawns, he raised some at home and frequently observed their movements. He wrote in his diary about ho w he had changed his method of painting prawns: “At first my prawns owned a reasonable similarity, then they became even more realistic, and finally light and dark colors became properly contrasted. These are the three changes.” Qi Baishi was able to portray the same object in either the xieyi or the gongbi style. When he painted a dragonfly in a detailed manner, he even drew the veins (翅膀) in its wings. When he adopted a bold, free style, he used only a few dry, expressive strokes to form it. What is fascinating about his work is that in some pictures both methods are used. 28.In his early life, what was Qi Baishi famous for?

湖南自考学位英语模拟试题及答案详解(一)

2013湖南学位英语仿真模拟试题 试题(一) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and y ou don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly w hen telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also be en done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. T o the trained observer th ey are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch. Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Concerning money or anything else, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect a power struggle. Conflicts between parent and child often center around the same issue. As children enter adolescence, they begin to demand greater freedom to go where they please, do what they please, and make decisions without parental interference. Many American parents do not know how to deal with their teenagers and seek advice from books, lectures, and parent training courses. Parents want to maintain a friendly relationship with their teenagers and also want to guide them so that their behavior will be whatever the parents consider proper and constructive. But in a society of rapidly changing social and moral values, parents and children often disagree about what is important and what is fight. Arguments may concern such unimportant matters as styles of dress or hairdos. But quarrels may also concern school work, after school jobs, decisions, use of the family car, dating, and sex behavior. Some families have serious problems with teenagers who drop out of school, run away from home, or use illegal drugs. Because so much publicity is given to the problem teenager, one gets the impression that all teenagers are troublemakers. Actually, relatively few adolescents do anything wrong, and nearly all grow up into "solid citizens" who fulfill most of their parents’ expectations. In fact, recent studies show that the "generation gap" is narrowing. The vast majority of teenagers share most of their parents’ values and ideas. Many parents feel that they get along with their adolescents quite well. 第1题 According to the writer, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect ________ A.feeling of hatred B.power struggle C.that they don′t care for each other D.that they may appeal to divorce 第2题 As children enter adolescents, they begin to do the following EXCEPT________ A.demanding greater freedom to go wherever they please B.making decisions without parental interference C.getting married whenever they please D.doing what they please 第3题 ". . . generation gap is narrowing.
