Urban Transportation in Canada

Public transportation & Transit passes

All cities and most major towns in Canada have a public transportation system with one or more modes of transportation (bus, subway, train, etc.). The bus is the most common form of urban transportation in Canada. To use public transportation, you must purchase a ticket or a transit pass. Transit passes allow you unlimited use of public transportation for a specific period (one month or more). They are usually cheaper than buying many tickets if you plan to use public transportation often.

Transportation for people with disabilities

Public transportation often has features to assist people with disabilities. In many cities and towns, there are also transportation services available specifically for people with limited mobility, such as specially equipped buses. You can find out about these services in the same way you would learn more about other public transportation options.

Etiquette on public transportation

When taking public transportation such as a bus or train, it is important to understand the unspoken rules of conduct in the shared space. Here are a few things to note:

◆Be polite and respectful to others around you. For example, maintain an appropriate noise level when talking or making a phone call.

◆If you are carrying a backpack or a large shoulder bag in a crowded public transit vehicle, keep it close to you, preferably at your feet to avoid hitting people with it as you walk by.

◆Avoid pushing or touching others in order to make more room for yourself. Sometimes public transit can become very crowded, but it is important to keep calm and give others appropriate personal space.

◆Have your proof of payment accessible in case you are asked to show it.

21、What is the advantage of using transit passes over buying tickets?

A.Safer trips.

B. Longer service hours.

C. Lower costs.

D. More use of transport.

22、How does the transportation system help people with disabilities?

A. By running special transport services.

B.By offering fewer transportation options.

C.By limiting their mobility on city buses.

D. By providing free rides in towns and cities.

23、What is considered impolite on public transportation?

A.Lowering your speaking voice.

B.Placing backpacks at your feet.

C. Staying close to other passengers.

D. Having your proof of payment at hand.

“Why do we have to learn all this dumb stuff?”

Of all the complaints and questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom, this was the one most frequently asked. I would answer it by telling the following legend.

One night a group of nomads (游牧民) were preparing to retire for the evening when suddenly

they were surrounded by a great light. They knew they were in the presence of a godly being. With great expectation, they awaited a heavenly message of great importance that they knew must be especially for them.

Finally, the voice spoke, “Gather as many pebbles (鹅卵石) as you can. Put them in your bags. Travel a day’s journey and tomorrow night will find you glad and it will find you sad.”

The nomads shared their disappointment and anger with each other. They had expected the inspiration of a great universal truth that would enable them to create wealth, health and purpose for the world. But instead they were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. However, the memory of the brilliance of their visitor caused each one to pick up a few pebbles and store them in their bags while voicing their displeasure.

They traveled a day’s journey and that night whi le making camp, they reached into their bags and discovered every pebble they had gathered had become a diamond. They were glad they had diamonds. They were sad they had not gathered more pebbles.

It was an experience I had with a student, whom I shall call Alan, early in my teaching career that illustrated the truth of that legend to me.

When Alan was in the eighth grade, he majored in “trouble”with a minor in “suspensions (停学)”. He had studied how to be a bully and was getting his master' degree in “thievery”. Every day I had my students memorize a quotation from a great thinker. As I called the roll (点名), I would begin a quotation. To be counted present, the student would be expected to finish the thought.

“Alice Adams —‘There is no failure except...’ ”

“‘In no longer trying.’ I’m present, Mr. Schlatter.”

So, by the end of the year, my young pupils would have memorized 150 great thoughts. “People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

“No pains, no gains.”

“If you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve it.”

No one complained about this daily routine other than Alan —right up to the day he was expelled (开除) and I lost touch with him for five years. Then one day, he called. He was in a special program at one of the neighboring colleges and had just finished parole(假释).

He told me that after being sent to juvenile hall (少管所) and finally being shipped off to the California Youth Authority for his wrong doings, he had become so disgusted with himself that he had taken a razor blade and cut his wrists.

He said, “You know what, Mr. Schlatter, as I lay there with my life running out of my body, I suddenly remembered that quote you made me write 20 times one day. “There is no failure except in no longer trying.” Then it suddenly made sense to me. As long as I was alive, I wasn’t a failure, but if I allowed myself to die, I would most certainly die a failure. So with my remaining strength, I called for help and started a new life.”

At the time he had heard the quotation, it was a pebble. When he needed guidance in a moment of crisis, it had become a diamond. And so it is to you, I say, gather all the pebbles you can, and you can count on a future filled with diamonds.

24. What does the underlined sentence “it will find you sad” (Pa ra. 4) mean?

A. The God told the nomads to gather pebbles that made no sense to them.

B. The pebbles won’t enable the nomads to create fortune.

C. The God didn’t give the nomads the message they expected.

D. The nomads regretted not having gathered as many pebbles as possible.

25. Why did Alan want to kill himself after being shipped off to the California Youth Authority?

A. He hated the hard life in the juvenile hall.

B. He was expelled by the school in the end.

C. He was badly treated at the California Youth Authority.

D. He felt so disappointed and hopeless about himself and his future.

27.According to the passage, we can conclude that Mr. Schlatter is an educator of ________.

A. sympathy and kindness

B. wisdom and patience

C. generosity and creativity

D. faith and devotion

28. Which of the following may probably be the best title?

A. A Naughty Trouble-marker

B. Pebbles and Nomads

C. The Magic Pebble

D. A Quotation that Saved Life

It’s because college kids today can’t do math, one line of reasoning goes. Or they don’t know science. These are all good theories, but the problem with these young adults’ unemployment goes way beyond a lack of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills.

A survey by the Workforce Solutions Group at St. Louis Community College finds that more than 60% of employers say applicants lack the ability to communicate and get along with others--- a jump pf about 10 percentage points in just two years. A large number of managers also say today’s applicants can’t think creatively, solve problems or write well. Jobs are going unfilled as a result, which hurts companies and employers. The annual global Talent Shortage Survey from Manpower Group finds that nearly 1 in 5 employers worldwide can’t fill positions because they can’t find people with soft skills.

One thing that does appear to make a difference is internships(实习). More than 80% of employers want new graduates they hire to have completed a formal internship, but only 8% of students say having an internship in a field related to their major is something they spend a lot of time doing. Instead, the top extracurricular activities (课外活动) are hanging out with friends, working in an unrelated job and eating out.

And all internships are not created equal. Overall, only about half of college grads say they’re prepared for the work---and the num ber of bosses who think they’re prepared is lower than 40%. Among students who don’t have an internship, only 44% consider themselves ready for the job market. That improves for students with unpaid internships; 58% say they’re prepared for the workplace. But among students who compete paid internships, that number jumps to 70%. None of the students think they’re entirely prepared for the workforce, but they are a lot more confident than the managers surveyed. Part of the problem is that “you don’t know wha t you don’t know”, as the saying goes.

Harris Interactive found a huge gap between students’ view of their abilities and managers’ view of those same skills such as financial skills. It’s just harder to teach these skills, experts say. “It is hard to corre ct a lifetime of bad habits in a short period of time,” Roderick Nunn, vice chancellor for economic development and workforce solutions at St. Louis Community College, tells the St Louis Beacon.

28. What does the underlined phrase “soft skills” in the seco nd paragraph refer to?

A. The skills of finding jobs.

B. Flexibility and interpersonal skills.

C. Knowledge about math and science.

D. Creativity and skills of communicating with employers.

29. What do most new graduates think of their internship?

A. They should do as their employers expect.

B. They should have their free life out of working hours.

C. They feel more prepared for the job after having an internship.

D. They needn’t spend too much time on the field related to their major.

30. What does the saying “you don’t know what you don’t know” indicate?

A. Students with different internships judge their abilities differently.

B. Students learn from internships and think more differently from before.

C. Students are unaware of what the employers think they are lacking.

D. Students don’t know much about the job they are going to work on.

31. The passage mainly talks about ________.

A. the different views about new graduates’ skills

B. new graduates’ performance in their internships

C. how new graduates c an meet their employers’ needs

D. the real reason why new graduates are unemployed

D

Given that motivation is so central to our lives, what do we truly understand about how it operates and about its role in our lives? The assumption is that it’s driven by a positive, external (外部的)reward. Do this, get that. But the story is much more complex.

One of the most striking aspects of motivation is that it often drives us to achievements that are difficult, challenging and even painful. You may think that you would be happy to spend all your time sitting on a white-sand beach drinking and that as long as you get to fill your days this way, you would be happy forever. But while a few days of enjoyment might be fun from time to time, I can’t imagine that you would be satisfied by spending your days, weeks, months, years and even your life this way.

Research that examines the differences between meaning and happiness finds that the things which give us a sense of meaning don’t nec essarily make us happy. Moreover, people who report having meaningful lives are often more interested in doing things for others, while those who focus mostly on doing things for themselves report being only superficially happy, in other words, just extern ally and apparently delighted. The essential quality of “meaning” has to do with having a sense of being involved in something bigger than the self.

We all know people obtain a great sense of meaning even in the most unpleasant of circumstances. Many volunteers spend portions of their lives working in dangerous, war-tom areas, tiding to keep disease and death from innocent civilians or teaching orphans to read. Their pain is real; their sense of doing something truly meaningful is substantial (丰富的).They show how our deep-rooted desire to believe that our lives have purpose beyond our lifespan drives us to work extra hard, even to the point of our own personal suffering, in order to gain more meaning.

The point is that these seemingly unusual and irrational (不合理的)motivations get us to do things that are complex, difficult and unpleasant. But they go beyond helping people in need.

They motivate us in every aspect of our lives--- whether in our personal relationships, in our individual pursuits or in the workplace.

32. According to the author, which of the following about motivation is TRUE? A.Motivation is simply driven by external rewards.

B.Motivation is largely determined by social responsibilities.

C.Motivation enables us to gain more financial returns.

D.Motivation drives us to struggle for achievements.

33. According to the research, which of the practices gives us a sense of meaning? A.Reading a classic novel in the leisure time.

B.Enjoying sunshine and comfort on the beach.

C.Accompanying terminal patients in hospital.

D.Listening to popular music in the sitting room.

34. The example of people's voluntary work in Para.4 mainly indicates that________.A.experiencing personal suffering is a necessary part of our growth

B.voluntary work serves the purpose of adding happiness to our lives

C.it's our duty to help people in need to get out of their sufferings

D.life's great rewards come from our experience of tough circumstances

35. What can we infer from the passage?

A.People should make sacrifices for social benefits due to their short lifespan.

B.The value and impact of motivation goes beyond our social circle and existence. C.Helping people in need is the most important goal of a human being nowadays. D.Superficially happy people usually put others first rather than focus on themselves.

What Is Emotional Eating?

Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. __1.__ Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downed cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test? But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.

Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings.

__2. One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. _3._

Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. _4.__ It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on.

We’re all emotional eaters to a degree. But for some peo ple emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or other problems. The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. __5.__ That’s why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.

Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it.

A. Believe it or not, we’ve all been there.

B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link cookies with comfort.

C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards.

D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.

E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.

F. Boys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, while girls go for chocolate and ice cream.

G. More often, though, it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort in food.

If you’re the smartest person in your circle, you’re in the wrong circle —you’ve outgrown it. It’s time to move to the next41. This saying encourages people to42more by hanging out with those who are more driven and43than they are.

I heard this saying44to me from my daughter’s friend this past w eek. Ally, Wes and I have been running for upcoming45. "You mean do what you’re doing?"I asked, with a surprised49on my face. "Exactly,"he answered."You can do it! You50need someone to push you."

As much as I51to admit it, he was right. I needed to52outside my comfort zone. I always let them run ahead of me, content to run at my own comfortable pace. But that was the 53—I’d grown too comfortable with my training.

I hadn’t been pushing myself. Ever since I had the surgery in April, I was a little54about running again. I was afraid to even try55that night when Wes pushed me into it —and outside my comfort zone. He was right! I was able to run —only about 5 minutes at a time before I had to walk again — but it was a(n)56. And that was all I needed to get back at it —no longer afraid to train harder.

Recently I have57my"training circle"to include Ally and Wes, and he wasn’t afraid to push me.

Having been exposed to smoke for a long time, you may find it hard to give it up. But the effects it has in you may die hard. And do you know what it is that results in such a situation? First, quantities of nicotine you get into your body are the source of your physical addiction. Second, your habit is to blame and you just can’t accustom you to the absence of nicot ine in your body. Third, most probably, you can be mental addicted and believe smoking make you feel good. Demanding as it is, you don’t need to put up with a situation. Every time you feel anxiety, just remember under no circumstance should you reach for a cigarette. It’s also suggested that help be needed if the situation is desperate. Of course, the most important is that to strengthen your resolve whenever you want to quit. And you can depend on that you can completely get rid of it as long as you keep trying.

Good morning, everyone!

Welcome to our Reading Activity.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2114064288.html,.cn组卷d

Welcome to our Reading Activity. It is a great honor for me to be here to say something about our activity, the topic of which is “I Love Chinese Classical Poetry”.The activity is aimed at motivating us students to learn Chinese classical poetry actively and inheriting Chinese traditional culture.

Why I love Chinese classical poetry is that it has a certain rhyme and is written in simple language, making it easy to learn and recite. Besides, it usually conveys true emotions towards family, friends or the country, which can make us acquire various emotional experiences.

In my opinion, reading classical poems can improve our understanding of the Chinese language. As we know, it is a treasure of Chinese culture. Only after we learn more about Chinese Classical poems will it deepen our understanding of our culture.

I hope the activity will be a great success and everyone can learn much from it.

That’s all. Thank you.
