Part II Reading Comprehension(30%)

Directions: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.

Passage A

A boy between the ages of 6 and 14 still admires his mother and has plenty to learn from her.

But his interests are changing --- he is becoming more interested in what men have to offer.

A boy knows he is turning into a man. He has to learn from a man to complete his development.

The father's job is to step in over time. If there is no father around, then the child depends more on finding other men --- at school, for example. Yet men are leaving teaching, especially

in primary schools. This is a problem.

They insisted, too, that they needed lots of extra support. Throughout primary school years and into high school, boys should spend a lot of time with their fathers and mothers, getting their help, learning how to do things and enjoying their company.

With regard to feelings, at this stage the father is more important. The boy is ready to learn from his father and listens to what he has to say. Often he will take more notice of his father. It's enough to drive a mother wild!

Now is a good time for a father to do "little" things: playing in the yard on summer evenings, going for walks, telling stories about life, telling him about his own youth, working on hobbies or sports together for the enjoyment of doing it. This is the time when good memories are laid down that will be healthy to your son, and you, for years to come.

Although every boy is different, it's common for boys at this age to get a little argumentative (好争论的), restless and moody(闹情绪). It's not that they are turning bad -- just that they are being born into a new self and birth always means struggle.

I believe this is the age when we fail teenagers the most. In our society all we offer those in the middle teens is "more of the same": more school. So it's little wonder that problems arise.

11. According to the passage a boy needs the help of _________ to develop well.

A) his mother only B) his father only

C) neither his mother nor his father D) both his mother and father

12. One problem for a boy's development is that ________.

A) there are fewer men teaching in primary schools

B) there are fewer women teaching in primary schools

C) the boy's interests are changing

D) the boy wants to act as a man

13. The good time for a father to have an influence on his son is ________.

A) when the boy is 14 B) when the boy is at primary school

C) from about age 6 to the 14th birthday D) since the boy was born

14. By the middle teens boys argue often with their parents. This means ________.

A) they are turning bad

B) they are turning good

C) they are being born into a new self

D) they are rebelling against their parents

15. The main idea of this passage is that ________.

A) fathers play an equal role in raising boys

B) mothers should feel comfortable when their sons' interests are changing.

C) without fathers mothers can raise good men

D) fathers should stay with their sons as much as possible

Passage B

Yukio is a twenty-four year old Japanese businessman. A few months ago, his company

sent him to work at its New York City office for half a year. This was his first experience living in the United States.

Yukio thought New York City was very exciting, but he also found it very strange. It was difficult for him to get used to it. He found it strange to be with people from so many different races. He sometimes found American people very direct, open and honest though at the same he felt curious about them. He wished he could become friends with some Americans, but he wasn't sure how to get along with them. Most of the time, he felt very lonely and missed Japan.

But soon some sunshine came into his life. A new clerk came to work in his office part-time. She was American, as were most of the clerks in his office. Her name was Cindy. She was very clever, friendly and good-looking. Cindy was also a student studying business. Cindy and Yukio got along very well. They talked together whenever possible. Cindy told Yukio her dreams of having a successful business. She said she was not really interested in getting married or having children. She wanted to use all of her energy for business. Yukio found Cindy very interesting and very different from the women he knew before. In a similar way, Cindy found Yukio unique among all the men that she knew. Soon the two fell in love and they were both very happy.

But now it is almost time for Yukio to return to Japan. Yukio wants Cindy to return to Japan with him and marry him. But Cindy doesn't speak any Japanese. She fears that Yukio wants her to become an ordinary wife and have children right away. Cindy wants Yukio to stay in New York City.

Passage C

The earth is not the only body that travels around the sun. With it are eight other planets (行星), fellow members of the sun's family.

Two of them are nearer while the other six are farther from the sun than the earth is. The farther they are, the longer trips they make around the sun. People noticed long ago that these traveling bodies moved around in the sky in fixed paths. It is a force called gravity (重力) that holds them in their paths.

We know that every little bit of matter in the universe (宇宙) pulls upon every other bit of matter. Because the sun is so large, the pulls between the sun and the planets are thus great. If it were not for these pulls, the planets would fly off into space. In the same way there exists a pull between the earth and the moon, which keeps the moon traveling in its orbit (轨道) around our planet, the earth. Gravity holds you to the earth’s surface, and pulls back to it the ball which you throw into the air. Of course, the ball also pulls on the larger earth but the earth is so much larger that the pull is not noticed.

Now remember that large bodies bring to bear a greater pull on any body than smaller ones which contain less material. But each object in the universe, no matter how small, pulls on all other objects to some degree.

B) go up into the sky

C) fly around the body

D) none of the above

25. Which of the following is TRUE?

A) The smaller matters fly off into space.

B) We do not notice the pull of the moon.

C) The moon travels around the earth because it's nearer to the earth than the other fellow

members in the sun's family.

They were all left-handed, along with other famous people including Pablo Picasso, Prince William, and Marilyn Monroe. In fact, an estimated 11 percent of Americans and Europeans are left-handed. Most people around the world are right-handed. This fact also seems to have held true throughout history. In 1977, scientists studied works of art made at various times in history starting with cave drawings from 15,000 B.C. and ending with paintings from the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works of art are right-handed, so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common. Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and various 1 and 2 characteristics, such as blond hair, blue eyes, 3 , and sleep difficulties. Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain 4 , including professional baseball and tennis players, 5 , lawyers, as well as prisoners. However, some of these connections are very weak, and others haven’t been proven. What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed? As yet, no one really knows for sure. One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness form their parents. Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only a 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed child, whereas two left-handed parents have a 26 percent chance of having a left-handed child. Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer 6 brain 7

Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2d685310.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
