I know what you're thinking: pizza(比萨饼)?For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night's leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐), and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don't have time, others think they're “saving” calories(卡路里),still others just don't like breakfast food.

But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you're trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D., who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year's “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it's loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.

Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night's leftovers——it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow.” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it...you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.

36.The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means______.

A.food remaining after a meal

B.things left undone

C.meals made of vegetables

D.pizza topped with fruit

37.What can we infer from the text?

A.Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.

B.Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.

C.There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.

D.Eating vegetables helps save energy.

38.According to the last paragraph, it is important to________.

A.eat something for breakfast

B.be careful about what you eat

C.heat up food before eating it

D.eat calorie-controlled food

39.The text is written mainly for those________.

A.who go to work early

B.who want to lose weight

C.who stay up late

D.who eat before sleep

Having a husband means an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, getting married saves an hour of housework a week. “It's a well-known_pattern,” said lead researcher Frank Stafford at University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. “Men usually work more outside the home, while women take on more of the housework.”

He points out that differences among households (家庭) exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. “And the situation gets worse for women when they have children.” Stafford said.

Overall, times are changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of sweeping-and-dusting work, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are taking on more housework, more than doubling their housework hours from six in 1976 to 13 in 2005.

Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most——about 21 hours a week.

Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom more often than younger men. Single men worked the hardest around the house, more than that of all other age groups of married men.

Having children increases housework even further. With more than three, for example, wives took on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands' 10 hours.

40.According to the “well-known pattern” in Paragraph 1, a married man________.

A.takes on heavier work

B.does more housework

C.is the main breadwinner

D.is the master of the house

41.How many hours of housework did men do every week in the 1970s?

A.About 28. B.About 26.

42.What kind of man is doing most housework according to the text?

A.An unmarried man.

B.An older married man.

C.A younger married man.

D.A married man with children.

43.What can we conclude from Stafford's research?

A.Marriage gives men more freedom.

B.Marriage has effects on job choices.

C.Housework sharing changes over time.

D.Having children means doubled housework.

The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started the Ne w England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.

Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers(广告商), readers, market value, and, in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor(主编) of the Times

said recently,“At places where they gather, editors ask one another,‘How are you?', as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case.”An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline “NOT DEAD YET.”

Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock(股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock-holders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post Company has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the company's income.

48.What can we learn about the Ne w England Courant?

A.It is mainly about the stock market.

B.It marks the beginning of the American newspaper.

C.It remains a successful newspaper in America.

D.It carries articles by political leaders.

49.What can we infer about the newspaper editors?

A.They often accept readers' suggestions.

B.They care a lot about each other's health.

C.They stop doing business with advertisers.

D.They face great difficulties in their business.

50.Which of the following found a new way for its development?

A.The Washington Post.

B.The Guardian.

C.The New York Times.

D.New England Courant.

51.How does the author seem to feel about the future of newspapers?

A.Satisfied. B.Hopeful.

C.Worried. D.Surprised.

It's only 4 hours flying time from Sydney, but a world away. What better place to rest than a country where the only place people hurry is on the football field and things are done in “Fiji time”?

Viti Levu——Great Fiji——is the largest island. Here you'll find the capital Suva and the international airport at Nadi. Vatoa, on the other hand, is a tiny island in the farthest part of Fiji. Then there are 331 other islands, many of them with places to stay.

With less than a million people living on islands, you'll never feel crowded. And with a climate(气候) that changes only for five degrees between seasons, there's never a bad time to come.

From cities to villages, from mountains to beaches, from water sports to wooden artworks, Fiji can give you more adventures and special experiences than you could find almost anywhere in the world.

Whenever you come, wherever you go, you're sure to see some unforgettable events. From war dances to religious(宗教的) songs. From market days to religious days. It's not just staged for tourists; it's still a part of everyday life in Fiji. And any one of us can enjoy Fiji's spirit by being part of the traditional(传统的) sharing of yaqona, a drink made from the root of a Fiji plant.

So why not join us for the experience of a lifetime?

In the picture, a man is smoking heavily in a factory. On the wall he sees a sign which means “No smoking”. But he finds that the factory is giving off large quantities of heavy smoke which makes him feel very puzzled, “Why does the factory forbid people to smoke while the factory itself gives off so much poisonous smoke?”

Nowadays, many factories know the danger of smoking and don't allow people to smoke in the factory. However, they don't pay any attention to the anger that they cause to the whole society. And they let out lots of polluted smoke and the smoke does great harm to our health and our environment.

In my opinion, we should take good care of natural environment! Something must be done to prevent the pollution caused by us!

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

Unit 4 THE EARTH IS BECOMIG WARMER-BUT DOES IT MATTER? During the 20th century the temperature of the earth rose about one degree Fahrenheit. That probably does not seem much to you or me, but it is a rapid increase when compared to other natural changes. So how has this come about and does it matter? There is no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer(see Graph 1) and that it is human activity that has caused this global warming rather than a random but natural phenomenon. All scientists subscribe to the view that the increase i n the earth’s temperature is due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to produce energy. Some byproducts of this process are called “greenhouse” gases, the most important one of which is carbon dioxide. Dr Janice Foster explains: “There is a natural phenomenon that scientists call the “greenhouse effect”. .贾尼丝·福斯特博士解释说:“你知道,有一种科学称之为‘温室效应’的自然现象。This is when small amounts of gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour, trap heat from the sun and therefore warm the earth.这种现象发生在大气层中少量的气体(如二氧化碳、甲烷、水蒸气等)吸收太阳的热量,因而,使地球变暖。 Without the‘greenhouse effect ,the earth would be about thirty-three degrees Celsciu cooler than it is. 如果没有这种‘温室效应’,地球的温度将比现在的温度还要低33摄氏度左右。So, we need those gases. 因此,我们需要这些气体。The problem begins when we add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 而当我们因为燃烧化石燃料而使大气层中增加了大量额外的二氧化碳时,问题就来了。It means that more heat energy tends to be trapped in the atmosphere causing the global temperature to go up.二氧化碳含量的增加意味着更多的热量被困在大气层中,从而引起了全球温度上升。 We know that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years. 我们知道,在过去100~150年期间,二氧化碳的含量急剧增加了。It was a scientist called Charles Keeling, who made accurate measurements of the amount of

Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. As a child, Harper Lee was a tomboy (假小子). She fought on the playground. She talked back to teachers, and she was bored with school. In high school Lee was lucky enough to have a gifted English teacher, Gladys Watson Burkett, who made her fall in love with literature and taught her h ow to write well. There Lee loved nineteenth-century British authors best, and once said that her dream was to become “the Jane Austen of South Alabama”.After leaving high school, she went to the University of Alabama. There she found a second home on the campus newspaper. Eventually she became editor-in-chief of the Rammer Jammer, a quarterly humor magazine on campus. She entered the law school, but she loathed it. Despite her father's hope that she would become a local attorney (律师) like her sister Alice, Lee went to New York for her writing. She spent eight years working small jobs before she finally showed a manuscript (手稿) to Tay Hohoff, an editor at J.B. Lippincott. At this point, it was more like a string of stories than the novel that Lee wanted to write. Under Hohoff's guidance, two and a half years of rewriting followed. Finally the novel was ready for publication. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960 to highly favorable reviews and quickly climbed the bestseller lists, where it remained for eighty-eight weeks. In 1961, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize. To Kill a Mockingbird has sold more than thirty million copies in eighteen languages. In 2011, President Obama awarded Nelle Harper Lee the National Medal of Arts. 4.When Nelle Harper Lee was a little girl, she ________.
