2. Abstract

The story begins on Epiphany (6 January), 1482, the day of the Feast of Fools in Paris, France. Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who is the bell-ringer of Notre Dame, is introduced by his crowning as the Pope of Fools.

Esmeralda, a beautiful Gypsy street dancer with a kind and generous heart, captures the hearts of many men, including those of Captain Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire, a poor street poet, but especially Quasimodo and his adoptive father, Claude Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. Frollo is torn between his obsessive lust and the rules of the church. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap her, but the hunchback is captured

by Phoebus and his guards, who save Esmeralda. Gringoire, witnessing all this, accidentally trespasses into the Court of Miracles, home of the Truands (criminals of Paris). He was about to be hanged under the orders of Clopin Trouillefou, the King of Truands, until Esmeralda saved his life by marrying him.

The following day, Quasimodo is sentenced to be flogged and turned on the pillory for one hour, followed by another hour's public exposure. He calls for water. Esmeralda, seeing his thirst, offers him a drink. It saves him, and she captures his heart.

Esmeralda is later charged with the attempted murder of Phoebus, whom Frollo actually attempted to kill in jealousy after seeing him trying to seduce Esmeralda, and is tortured and sentenced to death by hanging. As she is being led to the gallows, Quasimodo swings down by the bell rope of Notre Dame and carries her off to the cathedral under the law of sanctuary.

Frollo later informs Gringoire that the Court of Parliament has voted to remove Esmeralda's right to sanctuary so she can no longer seek shelter in the church and will be taken from the church and killed. Clopin hears the news from Gringoire and rallies the Truands (criminals of Paris) to charge the cathedral and rescue Esmeralda.

When Quasimodo sees the Truands, he assumes they are there to hurt Esmeralda, so he drives them off. Likewise, he thinks the King's men want to rescue her, and tries to help them find her. She is rescued by Frollo and her phony husband Gringoire. But after yet another failed attempt to win her love, Frollo betrays Esmeralda by handing her to the troops and watches while she is being hanged.

When Frollo laughs during Esmeralda's hanging, Quasimodo pushes him from the heights of Notre Dame to his death. Quasimodo then heads for the Gibbet of Montfaucon beyond the city walls. After reaching the Gibbet, he lies next to Esmeralda's corpse, where it had been unceremoniously thrown after the execution. He stays at Montfaucon, and eventually dies of starvation. About eighteen months later, the tomb is opened, and the skeletons are found. As someone tries to separate them, Quasimodo's bones turn to dust.

5. Comments

"Notre Dame de Paris" is the French writer Victor Hugo's first large-scale romantic novels. The novel is set in Paris in fifteenth Century eleven Louis era. Hugo said in the "Notre Dame de Paris": “if you ask what advantages in the book, it is the imagination, fantasy, and changeable aspects." Rich imagination, bizarre plot, unique structure, has become an important feature of this novel. This book is written to narrate the phrase of "fate".The great humanitarian, Hugo, is seeking the true meaning of fate. Whether Claude, or Casey Modoo, conflict of their heart, is a reflection of the times that people struggled between ignorant and curiosity, eventually led to the tragic ending.

Novel reflect the real history of more than 400 years ago, during the reign of King Louis the eleven, that how the church and court worked hand in glove to compress the masses of the people, the masses of the people how to against the two forces. In the novel, rebel Esmeralda and ugly Casey Modoo is written as the real embodiment of beauty to the readers, and we see cruelty, the emptiness of the mind and the sinful lusts in the archdeacon Frollo and noble soldier Verbis.

"Notre Dame de Paris" ,as a romantic masterpiece, it is because the author tries to, depicted the Medieval French social life , with excellent technique and romantic form, based on the moving plot development, and showed the vivid appearance and its implication in this work, won another victory following the "Anani" breaking classical rigid mode. This is an angry and tragic destiny symphony.

7. Bibliography

8. Language appreciation

"Notre Dame de Paris" is written by ancient history to reflect the reality of life in romantic. The author also wrote the man and beast in Notre Dame and the imperial shrine as people who witnessed the vicissitudes of human, added the romantic atmosphere to the novel by means of personification.

Author made full use of his own reference to the beauty and ugliness contrast method in the romantics to write the good and evil, beauty and ugliness, the noble and humble in comparison description. He also exaggerated to highlight some features, resulting in strong contrast in shaping the environment, events, the arrangement of the plot and characters. Garcia Modoo looks ugly, physically deformities, facial features is failure, but kind-hearted, brave and has a noble mind.He has a sharp contrast with sordid inner vice bishop Garrod.

Hugo exposed the posh ugly ,at the same time, also used romantics invented the beggar a tramp in the Kingdom, described and praised the civilian character ,from the bourgeois democratic ideology of feudal dynasty.

For other lower civilians, the author also was full of sympathy. Casey Modoo is kindness, , beggars are fraternity, dare to struggle, openly contemptuous of theocracy and regime. Because Hugo saw the strength of the masses, the work always maintained an

optimistic atmosphere, high style.Even in the end of the novel, vagabond army are suppressed, gypsy girl was killed , it still be permeated with optimistic, positive atmosphere. Of course, the novel also promoted love, kindness to transform human idealism.

Einstein, and many other scientists, found it more comfortable to believe that the equations of quantum mechanics simply represent some sort of mathematical trick, which just happens to give a reasonable working guide to the behavior of atomic and subatomic particles but that conceals some deeper truth that corresponds more closely tour everyday sense of reality. For what quantum mechanics says is that nothing is real and that we cannot say anything about what things are doing when we are not looking at them.

Even Einstein recoiled from the implication of quantum mechanics that reality is an illusion.1

Curtius?s term “the Latin Middle Ages”covers a range of Roman legacies, including “the share of Rome, of the Roman ideas of the state, of the Roman church, and of Roman culture.”4

In his “Hymn to Intellectual Beauty,” Shelley personifies the immaterial, spiritual world: “The awful shadow of some unseen Power/ Floats though unseen among us.”

Raymond Williams explains that the word career has all but lost its original meaning.

Career is now so regularly used to describe a person?s progress in life, or, by derivation from

this, his profession or vocation that it is difficult to remember, in the same context, its original

meaning of a racecourse and a gallop -- though in some contexts, as in the phrases “careering

about,” these survive. Career appeared in English (5)

In “Song of Myself,” Walt Whitman uses the diction and rhythm of natural speech.

A child said What is the grass? fetching it to me with full hands;

How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he.

I guess it must be the flag of my disposition, out of hopeful green stuff woven.

In a flashback, Miller demonstrates that the Loman family has a memory of better times.

[Linda enters, as of old, a ribbon in her hair, carrying a basket of washing.]

Linda. [With youthful energy] Hello, dear!

Willy. Sweetheart!

Linda. How?d the Chevvy run?

Willy. Chevrolet, Linda, is the greatest car ever built. [to the boys] Since when do you let your mother carry wash up the stairs?6

5. On other issues the Supreme Court handed down these decisions in 1989. “Ruling unanimously in a copyright case (community for Creative Non – Violence v. Redi, No. 88 - 293), the Court held that freelance artists and writers retain the right to copyright what they create as long as they were not in a conventional employment relationship with the organization that commissioned their work.

“The court unanimously refused to narrow the scope of the Federal racketeering law. The decision, H. J. Inc. v. Northwestern Bell, No. 87 – 1252, left the law, originally aimed at organized crime, as a powerful weapon in private civil lawsuits” (Linda Greenhouse, “The Year the Court Turner Right,”New York Times, 7 July 1989, A10).

Jean-Jacques Roussseau admits, “I felt before I thought.”8

“I felt before I thought,” Rousseau explains.8

Gibbon sets the tone for his monumental history with the assertion that “in the second century of the Christian era, the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilized portion of mankind.”9

“In the second century of the Christian era, the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth,” in Gibbon?s estimation, as well as “the most civilized portion of mankind.”9

In his history of the Civil war, Bruce Catton describes Colonel Solomon J. Meredith as a “breezy giant of a man.”10

According to Catton, Colonel Solomon J. Meredith was “a breezy giant of a man.”10

Theodore Roosevelt counseled, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”11

Theodore Roosevelt is the American President who advised leaders to “speak softly and carry a big stick.”11

Deborah Tannen characterized women?s use of speech as follows:

For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: a way of

establishing connection and negotiating relationship. Emphasis is placed on displaying

similarities and matching experience.12

Deborah Tannen distinguishes women?s use of speech from men?s.

For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: (12)

James Moffett finds that when people try to talk about abstraction,

They resort finally to talking about how people, especially children, learn. It is hard to avoid an

analogy between stages of information processing that go on in all of us all the time, and

developmental stages of growth. A curriculum sequence based on such analogy, however, needs

to be carefully qualified.13

Awareness of audience is essential to successful communication because

all utterances are to some degree determined by a complex of contextual factors including who is

talking, who is being addressed, what is being talked about, and others. If speakers did not take

these factors into account, all kinds of communicative misfires would result.14
