二、阅读理解(第一节20小题;第二节 5 小题,每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节

A

Educators have long warned students about posting damaging information online, but now it’s also becoming important to build a positive digital footprint. When should students start building their online character? The earlier, the better.

Employers usually use the Internet to find out everything about a potential employee. Photos and information posted online — when a person has his guard down — can be more telling than anything a person writes on a résumé or says in an interview.

Job seekers aren’t the only ones who need to maintain a positi ve Web presence; it may become more important for high school students applying to college. At Tufts University, for example, high school seniors were allowed to submit one-minute videos along with their application packages.

“Admissions officials insist the videos are no substitute for a good academic record,” The Boston Globe reported. “They are just another way to identify applicants with a special spark (活力).” Having that “special spark” certainly can’t hurt. Cindy Barr, Elon University assistant dean of admissions, told Lindsay Kimble of The Pendulum, Elon’s newspaper, that she has received applications with links to YouTube videos or student Web sites “created for the business they started or for a service organization they founded.” Although these links “are not assessed as part of the formal admissions decision,” Barr said, “it’s interesting to see what the students have accomplished.”

In a lesson plan that can be adapted for grades 6-12, The Learning Network Blog from The New York Times asks students to think about their skills and experience and create two résumés: one traditional and one interactive, using the Web, audio clips, video or slide presentations.

How can students create that special spark and make themselves special? Start early. By the time students are in ninth grade, they should be actively creating and sharing content online; to

learn to do so well and safely by then, they must start earlier.

41. Employers use the Internet to find out information about a potential employee because .

A. they can have a wider choice of possible employees

B. it’s quicker and more convenient to find someone online

C. what people post online tells more about themselves

D. they will learn the possible employees’ opinion about the job

42. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that .

A. admissions officials care for nothing but a student’s academic record

B. admissions officials also value a student’s practical skills

C. a student’s video has become a must in their application to a university

D. admissions officials are more interested in a student’s video

43. How can students make an interactive résumé?

A. Add some pictures to their traditional résumé.

B. Leave space for comments in their résumé.

C. Leave their phone numbers in their résumé.

D. Give links to their online videos in their résumé.

44. If students want to distinguish themselves they should .

A. start a business of their own

B. create the traditional résumé

C. build their online character as early as possible

D. learn how to make videos as early as possible

The associates I hired in my bicycle and lawn mower (割草机) shop like myself were never perfect; however, they were excellent. Working with them as they improved taught me new ways to show forgiveness, understanding, and patience.

One day the placement officer asked me to interview a young man who was having trouble finding a job. He told me that David was a little shy, did not talk much and was afraid to go on with interviews. He requested that I give David an interview just for practice. He plainly told David that I had no positions open at the time and the interview was just for practice.

When David came in for the interview, he hardly said a word. I told him what we did at the bicycle shop and showed him around. I told David to keep showing up because the number one thing an employer wanted in an associate was dependability.

David was very quiet (he was evaluated as a slow learner in school). Every ten days or so, for weeks after the interview, David walked into the bicycle shop and stood by the front door. He never said a word, just stood by the door.

One day, shortly before Christmas, a large truck came to the shop, packed with 250 new bicycles. It had to be unloaded right away or the driver would leave.

It was raining. Some of my workers (without physical limitations) chose not to brave the weather to get into work, so I was short-handed. It seemed everything was going wrong and on top of it, David came in the front door and just stood there. I looked at him and shouted, “Well, all right! Fill out a time card and help me unload this truck!”

David worked for my bicycle shop for eighteen years. He came to work every day thirty minutes early. He could talk; however, he rarely chose to. He drove my truck and made deliveries. The customers would praise David, saying, “He doesn’t talk, but he really shows you how t o operate a lawn mower!”

45. The author gave David an interview to .

A. find a person who is reliable

B. find a part-time worker in need

C. give him some practice

D. show sympathy for him

46. The author finally hired David because .

A. there were no other workers in the shop then

B. he needed someone who was willing to work then

C. David kept showing up

D. he realized David was dependable

47. We can infer from the last paragraph that .

A. some customers just play jokes on David

B. David has had his character changed through work

C. the author prefers David to be more outgoing

D. the author feels lucky to hire David

48. The author’s tone in describing David is full of .

A. pity

B. wonder

C. disappointment

D. appreciation

Stores’ music, lighting, deals and pricing ranges can all influence what you buy. And if you want to spend less, pay in cash so you can see what you’re losing.

Chances are, given the time of year and all, you’re about to go shopping. But be aware. It w on’t be just a walk in the mall. Shopping is a far more complex task than you probably realize, according to researchers.

“We have a difficult time controlling our shopping behavior,” says Alexander Chernev, associate professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. “It’s influenced by lots of forces we usually don’t take into account.”

“Everyone in the world of retail (零售) is trying to get you to spend in their location,” says Paco Underhill, author of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, What Women Want and They try to engage you with all five senses.

Retailers work to present their goods in the best light — literally. “They use lighting to make something that looks good or even better,” Underhill says. “Everything tends to look better in the store than it does when you get it home.”

If you like the music a store plays, chances are you’ll like the products it sells — and vice versa. That, at least, is the message many stores hope to send with their music. For example, the strains (乐曲) of Justin Bieber singing softly Someday at Christmas are pretty much a shout-out to young girls that this is the store for them.

The sweet smell of hot chestnuts. Free samples of Christmas cookies. Like music, those are effective ways of inviting customers into a store and making them feel welcome.

49. We know from the first paragraph that .

50. A store will play a piece of music in order to .

Driving a car is more stressful than traveling by bus, according to new research. A study by Dr David Lewis will be used as a major part of the Greener Journeys campaign. The aim is to persuade motorists up and down the country to abandon their cars for one billion journeys in the next four years — in favor of traveling by bus.

Dr Lewis, from the University of Sussex, conducted an experiment in which the heart rate and EDR (皮肤电反应) of 30 volunteers were measured when taking identical or similar journeys by car as a driver and by bus as a passenger. The results indicated that stress was, on average, 33 percent lower when traveling by bus.

EDR measures the change in the respons e of a person’s skin to anxiety or stress. EDR can be a hidden stress. This type of stress can have long-term physical and emotional impacts. Taking a bus can produce long-term benefits.

Dr Lewis said there are three main factors that make driving a car stressful: heavy traffic causes the brain to work harder, traffic jams cause a build-up of anger and there is a sense of frustration that a person is “wasting one’s life” because few things can be done at the same time as driving. The study shows that driving in traffic jams now outweighs (超过) any previous benefits that driving in a private car once gave.

The Greener Journeys campaign will encourage people to get out of their cars and go by bus where it is convenient and realistic to switch. Claire Haigh, a spokesman for Greener Journeys, said the findings might persuade drivers — who were already concerned about CO2 emissions —that traveling by bus had health benefits as well as environmental ones. One fifth of motorists would be prepared to change to public transport for reasons to do with the environment. Just one double-decker bus can take 75 cars off the road, fairly reducing emissions levels.

53. According to the text, EDR .

A. reflects people’s ability in sports

B. isn’t as obvious as anxiety o r anger

C. has an immediate effect on health

D. may create long-term benefits

54. Which of the following is NOT the cause that makes drivers stressed?

A. Drivers fear that there might be something wrong with their car.

B. Drivers focus on traffic with brains working at full speed.

C. Drivers feel more and more annoyed by serious traffic jams.

D. Drivers feel frustrated with their time being wasted in the traffic jam.

55. From the text we know that .

A. taking buses is good for health and the environment

B. governments should limit the production of cars

C. taking cars is the only cause of the emission of greenhouse gases

D. buses would become the main means of transportation in the future

56. We may read the text online in the section of .

A. economy

B. fashion

C. lifestyle

D. entertainment

The election of Herbert Hoover in 1928 made Americans more hopeful than ever about their future. The clearest evidence of the public’s faith in the economy is the stock market. And the New York Stock Exchange reacted to the new president with a wild increase in prices. During the months after Hoover’s election, prices generally rose like a rocket. Men and women made huge amounts of money overnight.

A number of economic experts were worried about the sharp increase in stock prices that followed Hoover’s election. The president himself urged stock market officials to make trading more honest and safe. And he approved a move by the Federal Reserve Board to increase the interest charged to banks. However, both efforts failed to stop the growing number of Americans who were spending their money wildly on stocks. The prices went still higher.

By early September, 1929, the stock market reached its high point of the past eighteen months. Life was like a dream. But like any dream, it could not last forever. In the same month, stock prices stopped rising. During the next month and a half, stock prices fell, but only slowly. Then suddenly, at the end of October, the market crashed. Prices dropped wildly. Everyone tried to sell their stocks. But no one was buying. The stock market collapsed on Thursday, October 24th, 1929. People remember the day as “Black Thursday”, the day the dreams ended.

The stock market crash ruined thousands of Americans. In a few short weeks, traders lost thirty billion dollars, an amount almost as great as all the money the United States had spent in World WarⅠ. Some businessmen could not accept what had happened. They jumped from the tops of buildings and killed themselves.

The stock market crash marked the beginning of the Great Depression — a long, slow, painful fall to the worst economic crisis in American history. The Depression would bring suffering to millions of people. It would cause major political changes. And it would be a major force in creating the conditions that led to World War Ⅱ.

57. It is implied in Paragraph 2 that Herbert Hoover _____.

A. took no measures to control stock prices

B. didn’t believe what economic experts said

C. believed stock trades were honest and safe

D. was worried about the sharp increase in stock prices

58. We know that at the end of October, 1929, stock holders _____.

A. still believed stock prices would go up

B. still wanted to buy stocks from other people

C. became more and more worried about the stocks they held

D. believed their president would solve the problem quite soon

59. Why does the author mention the amount of money the USA spent in World War Ⅰ?

A. To show that the losses caused by the market crash were really huge.

B. To help us know the harm of investing money in a wrong way.

C. To tell us that World WarⅠruined thousands of Americans.

D. To prove that the stock market used to be as dangerous as wars.

60. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. World WarⅡwas directly caused by the stock market crash.

B. The stock market crash greatly affected American people’s life.

C. No one expected America would experience such an economic crisis.

D. America was not the most seriously hit country by the Great Depression.

The fox then got up and said, “I ate a number of hens and chicks last night. So I must have slept longer than usual.” The cock counted his hens and chicks, and found several chicks were missing. “Alas!” said he, “how is it that I do not know of it?” “My dear sir,” said the fox, as he ran back to the wood, “it was last night that I

When the owner asked how he could have tested the ass in such a short time, the man answered, “I didn’t even need to see how he worked. I knew he would be just like the one he chose to be his friend.”

Dear Wang Hai,

I am sorry to hear that you are not happy at your new school. I can fully understand your feelings, but there is no need to worry. All you need to do now is change your attitude.

It’s quite normal that a person should feel nervous to answer a stranger’s question or uncomfortable in a new environment. As a matter of fact, your new classmates are as friendly to you as your old friends. So I suggest you open your heart and talk with them frankly and sincerely. When you show your kindness to them, you will find that they are really lovely and easy to get

along with. And you will soon make many friends there.

I hope my advice will help you out. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Mr. Wang, Knowing that our library is going to buy books, I’d like to give some suggestions. What we need most are popular science books. Usually popular science books explain basic principles of nature in a simple and interesting way. They help us understand science subjects better and arouse our curiosity about scientific discoveries. In addition to reading for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration. That is why I recommend another category of books:literary books. Classic works, written by masters, present great thoughts through fascinating stories and language. They not only offer us joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critically. I’ll be glad if you can consider my recommendation. Yours sincerely, Li Yue

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim— were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly t hat his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century
