BEIJING, Feb. 26 (China Daily) -- As the smog orange warning continues, tourist attractions in Beijing are experiencing a quick fall in visitor number.

A new report on the morning of February 24 shows that the concentration of PM 2.5 has risen, with no sign of decreasing, the orange warning will still be in effect, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to data by the Beijing Tourism Website, by 2:00 pm, February 24, popular tourist attractions including The Great Wall and Palace Museum had been affected by the smog in terms of tourist numbers.

As for the Palace Museum, the number of visitors was only 11,200 that day, far from the figure of 40,000, which is the daily average number of visitors it normally receives.

There were a few visitors in Beihai Park on the morning of February 24, and two visitors from Hebei province planned to end their morning tour earlier than planned because of the smog. One of them said, “The visibility is so poor that we can’t take good photos, or even see clearly. A tour guide with China Travel Service also told the media that it was a tour guide’s duty to inform foreign visitors of the smog conditions in Beijing, and the agency would provide free face masks to those in need. But work to do so only treats the symptom(症状) rather than the disease itself, because the root cause is air pollution. A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someo ne else or ourselves—the positive and negative

effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves lo ud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk”helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words have power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

58. There is no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves because _________.

A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage

C. we can benefit from talking to ourselves

D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

59. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ________.

A. remind ourselves

B. praise ourselves

C. make ourselves relaxed

D. give ourselves amusement

60. The author would probably hold the view that _________.

A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B. negative words may motivate us to make more progress

C. people tend to remember friendly words

D. it is better to think twice before talking to others

61. In which column of the newspaper are you most likely to read this passage?

A. News.

B. Fashion

C. Health.

D. Language.

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood

from another space: happy and carefree.

But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”

In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.

All the lights were off except father’s.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting a t me, he never showed any pity or any moments of regret.

This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love----it’s second to none.

62. Which is the correct order of the following events according to the passage?

a. I opened the door and entered the house.

b. I ran out into the street angrily.

c. I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.

d. I recalled my happy childhood.

e. I began to walk about in the street without any aim.

A. e, b, d, c, a

B. b, e, d, c, a

C. b, e, c, d, a

D. e, b, c, a, d

63. According to the author, why did his father often shout at him?

A. Perhaps the father was getting older and older.

B. Perhaps the son had already grown up.

C. Perhaps they never agreed with each other.

D. Perhaps the father had been used to doing that.

64. What did the author mean by the underlined sentence “My heart was frozen on this hot summer night”?

A. He felt lonely because there were so few people on the street.

B. He felt uncomfortable because it was a very hot night.

C. He didn’t know where to go at all.

D. He had a bad cold on such a hot day.

65. What was the author’s attitude towards his father at the end of the story?

A. He loved his father.

B. He was worried about his father.

C. He was afraid of his father.

One possible version:

Is Money Everything?

Many people believe that money is the most important thing in life. It seems impossible to live without money in today’s society. With money, people can buy fancy clothes, expensive foods, bigger houses and travel all around the world. Money ensures people’s basic needs and leads to a better life.

Does money mean everything? Indeed, money can buy a lot of things we need. But there are many wonderful things that cannot be bought with money. For example, knowledge cannot be bought with money. One cannot be rich in knowledge unless he studies hard. There are still many other things that cannot be bought with money, like time, health, friendship, happiness and so on.

So, money is not everything; it's just the tool to live better. We need to work hard to earn money, but we can never forget to rest to save our health, to find more time to be with the family, to share happiness and sadness with family and friends.

Let’s keep the saying “Money is a good servant but a bad master.” in our mind and enjoy our life.
