第一节(共15小题; 每小题2分, 满分30分)

A

Pupils don’t often think their teachers really exist

outside the school gates; now robot classroom assistants

could make this a reality.

Almost 30 egg-shaped robots have started teaching

English at primary schools in South Korea. The 3. 3-foot-high machines have a TV panel(仪表盘), which displays a female face, and can wheel around the classroom while speaking to the students. The robots are also able to read books and dance to music, moving their heads and arms. But despite appearances, the robots are not autonomous beings. They are actually controlled remotely by English teachers living in the Philippines, who can see and hear the children by a remote control system. Cameras then detect the teachers’facial expressions and reflect them on the panel face.

Apart from reading books, the robots use pre-programmed software to sing songs and play alphabet games with the children. The kids seem to love them because the robots look cute and interesting. Some adults also express interest, saying they may feel less nervous talking to a robot than to a real person.

The robots are still being tested. But officials might consider hiring them full time, if scientists upgrade them and make them easier to handle and more affordable. “Having robots in the classroom makes the students more active in class, especially

Kim Mi-Young.

Some may be sent to remote rural areas of South Korea avoided by foreign English teachers. The robots, which cost£5, 600 each, will provide extra support for teachers, but not replace them. Ms. Mi-Young added, “Well-educated, experienced Filipino teachers are far cheaper than any teachers elsewhere, including South Korea. But robot teachers won’t complain about health insurance, sick leave and severance package(遣散费), or leave in three months for a better-paying job in Japan. . . All you need is a repair and upgrade every once in a while. ”

He is a lesson to every boy who ever picked up a basketball and dreamed that it would change his life.

The lights were never brighter and the crowds were never bigger for a homegrown sports hero than they were a quarter century ago for Ray Hall. But his athletic achievements, as impressive as they are, are to my mind not what is most admirable about the man.

Known as “Sugar Ray”in his teens, Hall was rated among the country’s t op 25 high school basketball players. An inner-city kid from a solid family, Hall took on the challenge of lifting Canisius College—still recovering from its failure—back to respectability, rejecting more favorable offers. His status of a savior(救世主)brought more pressure than any 18-year-old should have to handle, however, I watched him matured into the player who led Canisius back to daylight.

After college Hall played professionally in Italy and Greece for over 10 years until a car accident at 32 ended his basketball career. The news that he would never play again shocked Hall but unlike so many others he was ready for life after basketball. When I met Hall—still fit at 46—for lunch on Monday, he wore a cut-sharp gray suit, designer tie and blazing white shirt that screamed success. “That was always the question—when the cheers end, where do you go? Who do you turn

Hall got the concept of academics first from his parents. He graduated from Canisius a semester early. “No matter how good of an athlete you are, you are just one injury away from losing it all, ”he said, “But if you take care of things academically, you are prepared until you leave this Earth. ”

For the past 14 years, he has been in a computer sales job at Ingram Micro. He married his college sweetheart. They have three kids and a nice house in the suburbs. He figured out early what others learn too late: Athletics is part of a journey, not the destination.

Congratulations, Ray, you made it. In more ways than one.

a. He was ranked among the best high school basketball players.

b. He was in a car accident.

(2013·天津模拟) We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythm. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.

Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming while driving or stopped at a traffic light. I get weird looks from some people and others laugh. Personally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly!

The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is: stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they walk around all seriously, which in all honesty, is foolish!

No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don’t care how educa ted, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal, how rich, and so on. . . No one is perfect ! So why pretend to be something you are not?

why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity(呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:

“Dance as though no one is watching you,

Love as though you have never been hurt before,

Sing as though no one can hear you,

Live as though heaven is on Earth. ”

When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocence.

So don’t lo se the child that still lives within you. The next time you feel down, go turn on your favorite song, sing and dance along like there is no tomorrow. Or watch something that makes you laugh. Laughter is the best medicine to whatever ails you and nothing is better than laughing so hard that your tummy hurts. Trust me, you will feel a whole lot better, and who doesn’t want to feel good?

63. According to the passage, what does the writer usually do?

A. He pretends to be a rock star.

B. He dances in his own home.

C. He sings songs while going to work.

D. He gets jammed on his way to work.

64. What do other people think of the writer?

A. They think that the writer is strange.

B. They look down upon the writer.

D. No one is interested in the writer.

65. What is the writer’s opinion about the people who look very serious?

A. They are honest.

B. They are silly.

C. They are perfect.

D. They are educated.

66. The writer quotes Souza to show that.

A. life is a beautiful journey

B. life is full of rigidity

C. life is like a great recipe

D. life is to be treasured

The world will run out of Internet addresses within weeks, according to one of the founding fathers of the Web.

Vint Cerf, who helped create the Web by connecting computers using Internet Protocol(IP)addresses, said it was his fault that the 4. 3 billion addresses created were running out.

“I thought it was an experiment and I thought that 4. 3 billion addresses would be enough to do the expe riment, ”Cerf, who is Google’s vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist, said, “Who the hell knew how much address space we needed? ”

In 1977, Cerf created the Web protocol(协议)IPv4, which connects computers globally, as part of the experiment while working with the U. S. Department of Defense. He said he never expected his experiment “wouldn’t end”. “It doesn’t mean the network stops, it just means you can’t build it very well. ”Cerf said.

websites or other Internet-connected devices. They are not the same as website domain names. The overwhelming number of devices now accessing the Internet means the addresses are running out fast. To resolve the crisis, an updated protocol for the Internet, IPv6, currently being planned by the industry, will create trillions of addresses.

As Google’s vice president Cerf said he thought the new chief executive of Google, Larry Page, was ready to lead the company into the future. In a surprise move, Google announced that co-founder Larry Page would replace Eric Schmidt as chief executive.

Eric Schmidt, 55, a former chief executive of Novell, will remain with Google as executive chairman, focusing on deals, partnerships, customers and government outreach. He will also act as an adviser to Larry Page, 37, who served as CEO previously, from 1998 to 2001.

Cerf said Eric Schmidt had been chief executive for 10 years-a nice round number—and Larry Page was ready to lead the company into the future. “Lar ry Page and Sergey Brin are 10 years older than they were when they thoughtfully hired Eric Schmidt to be the CEO, so everybody is growing up, ”Cerf said.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

-必修 5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national

高中英语必修五全册课文内容

Unit 1 Great scientists JOHN SNOW DEFEATS “KING CHOLERA” John Snow was a famous doctor in London – so expert, indeed, that he attended Queen Victoria as her personal physician. But he became inspired when he thought about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly disease of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera killed people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed evidence. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enquiry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gather information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had lived. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the deaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 and 40). He immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle from the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed down. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deaths that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away from Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it delivered to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drinking the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with certainty that polluted water carried the virus. To prevent this from happening again, John Snow suggested that the source of all the water supplies be examined. The water companies were instructed not to expose people to polluted water any more. Finally “King Cholera” was defeated. COPERNICUS’ REVOLUTIONARY THEORY Nicolaus Copernicus was frightened and his mind was confused. Although he had tried to ignore them, all his mathematical calculations led to the same conclusion: that the earth was not the centre of the solar system. Only if you put the sun there did the movements of the other planets in
