1. to seek work with (an organization)在(某单位)求职(L. 3)

e.g. To seek work with a famous company, you must get ready to meet with fierce competition and challenges from all sides.

2.to shave off 剃去;削去(L. 3)

e.g. She s aid to me on the phone, “My biggest wish is get a facelift to shave ten years off my age.”

3.to take sb. to court对某人提起诉讼(L. 6)

8.句型3

For all + noun phrase, sb. be (more) + adj. / v-ed + prep. phrase 尽管······, 某人却(更) ······

用于表述“某人的真实状态”。

e.g. For all their deep concern about the current financial crisis, the Chinese people are untroubled abou t their future life.

尽管对当前的金融危机深感不安,中国人对未来的生活并不担忧。

9.to be untroubled about…对······不担忧(L. 25)

e.g. Be troubled about affairs of the state before others;

Be indulged in the comfort of life after others.

用于表述“某事的后效应”。

e.g. If you know well what you came to college for today, your life is likely to be invested with stronger sense of responsibility from now on.

如果你今天深悉上大学之目的,你的生活就可能从现在起被赋予更强烈的责任感。

14. to be hit by/with…遭遇到······打击/受到······影响(L. 39)

e.g. Hit by the heavy storm, the power grid can not function properly.

受到暴风雪的影响,电力网不能正常运作了。

15. not to find many kind things to say about sth./sb. 对······没有好感(L. 41)

e.g. One is old indeed when he or she always finds no kind things to say about what most youths are seeking after.

For all words of praise with regard to that film, I could not find many kind things to say about it.

16. in response to sth./in answer to sth.响应某事;回应某事(L. 46)

in an apparent response to显然是针对······:

e.g. Quite a few teenagers often go to extremes in response to their parents’ suggestions that they should not do something, thus doing more hurt to their parents.

为数不少的青少年常常采取过激行为,作为对父母建议他们不要做某事的回应, 从而给父母造成了更大的伤害。

She made it clear that, in her dictionary of life, fame is put before shame in an apparent response to negative remarks about her photo album online.

17. to figure prominently/largely in 在······中占突出地位/起突出作用(L. 50/L. 72)

18句型5

Sb. point out / argue that sth. be done not prep. phrase, as some might think, but prep. phrase 某人指出/ 坚持认为,某事不是像一些人所想的那样······,而是······

用于表述“某人的观点”。

e.g. One thinker once pointed out that a happy journey of life is focused not on its destination, as some might think, but on landscape

along the way.

一位思想家曾指出,快乐的人生之旅不是像一些人所想的那样着眼于最终目标,而是沿途的风景。

The best mind points out that success of ordinary people is dependent not on gifts, as some might think, but on the ability to develop common talents to the utmost extent.

这位智者指出,普通人的成功,不是像一些人所想的那样依靠天赋,而是靠把寻常的天资发展到不同寻常的高度。

19. to be taken too far(某事)做得过分(L. 60)

e.g. The de velopment of children’s potentials should not be taken too far; otherwise, it may become a burden and drag on them.

to take one’s effort too far 做得太过分:

e.g. He is willing to associate with people of the other sex, but he never takes his effort too far.

21. as a concession to sth.是对某事的让步(L. 68)

e.g. If you have your ears shut to what is going on outside the window as a painful concession to the changeable world, you will fail to feel the pleasant surprise from the outside world.

如果你两耳不闻窗外事是对变幻莫测的世界作出痛苦的让步,那你就感受不到来自外界的惊喜。

As a concession to public cries for the transparency of administration, the local government decided to make public the incomes of officials.

e.g. Believe it or not, ideas create great figures that occur to their minds in a flash. A case in point is the story of Watt.

24. to put sth. at the top of a list of things to do 把某事作为要处理事

务的首选(L. 75)

e.g. When one has many things to mind, it is wise of him to put the most pressing at the top of a list of matters to deal with.

当一个人有许多事情要专注时,明智的做法是把最紧迫的事作为要处置事务的首选。
