三、阅读理解(每小题2分,共30分)

1. Mr. Phanourakis was 85 when he said goodbye to his Greek mountain village and took an American ship for the United States. His sons have done well in business there and wanted him to spend his remaining years with them.

The old gentleman knew no language except his own but, with the self-confidence of the Greek mountain villager, he made his way easily about the foreign ship. When the bell announced the serving of lunch on his first day on board,he found the number of his table on the passenger-list outside the dining room and went straight to it while most of the others waited for the chief steward to tell them where to sit.

It was a small table for two. Mr. Phanourakis sat down. After a few moments his table companion arrived. “Bon appetit, m?sieur,” he murmured politely, as he took the other chair.“Phanourakis,” he said, carefully spacing out the Greek syllables.

During the afternoon, one of the ship?s officers, who spoke some Greek, asked the old gentleman if he had found any acquaintances on board.

Mr. Phanourakis shook his head. “No,” he said,“the only person I?ve met so far is my table companion. He must be French. His name is Bonappetit―or something like that.”

“That is not his name,”said the officer.“It is a French expression that means…Good appetite'”.

2. Different countries and different races have different manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries even though shoes sometimes become very muddy, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house sometimes does not finish a drink. He leaves a little, to show that he has had enough. In a Malay house, too, a guest always leaves a little food. In England, a guest always finishes a drink to show that he enjoys it.

We should like to find out the customs of other races, so that they will not think us ill-mannered(举止粗鲁). But people all over the world agree that being well-mannered really means being kind and helping others, especially those older or weaker than ourselves. If you remember this, you will not go very far wrong.

Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.

He never laughs at people when they are in trouble. He is always kind either to people or animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a post office he lines up to wait his turn. In the bus, he gives his seat to an older person or a lady who is standing. If he accidently bumps into(碰,撞)someone, or gets in their way, he says “Excuse me”or “I’m sorry”. He says “Please”when making a request, and “Thank you”when he receives something. He stands up when speaking to a lady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated. He does not talk too much about himself. When eating, he does not speak with his mouth full of food.

3.Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is “Don't!”. But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, publicity(宣传), taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got

out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

Passage 1

In 1860,Fishport was a small rural settlement on the west coast of Newland with a population of 204 pioneers. The inhabitants were small farmers and fishermen. They farmed the land during the summer months and survived the subzero temperatures from November to May by fishing and hunting. The population of Fishport rose steadily. The birth rate and longevity(寿命)increased, and child mortality decreased due to improvements in medical care and greater attention to problems of nutrition. By 1950,there were 2,000 people living in the community.

In the 1940?s and early 1950?s,exploration companies discovered large deposits of iron ore and other minerals(矿石)in a region some 500 km inland. There is now a 500 km railroad which carries minerals from Iron City and Fairview to Fishport. There, the minerals are loaded directly onto ships to be transported to the industrial centers in southern Newland or exported to foreign

countries. As a result of this development,Fishport?s population rose dramatically until,by 1980,there were 110,000 residents. Immigration from other countries was higher than that of other areas of Newland and, consequently,Fishport is now a multilingual(使用多种语言的)urban community. It has a small but busy airport and road, rail and sea links with most important towns in the rest of the country.

The Fishport town council is now seriously concerned about the size of the community and about its future. If the town continues to grow at the same rate as for the last twenty-year period,it will have nearly 200,000 inhabitants in 20 years. If this happens, hospitals, housing, schools and other important services will all be inadequate.

Passage 3

A computer is a machine designed to perform work mathematically and to store and select information that has been fed into it. It is run by either mechanical or electronic means. These machines can do a great deal of complicated work in a very short time. A large computer, for example, can add or subtract(减去)nine thousand times a second, multiply(乘)a thousand times a second, or divide five hundred times a second. Its percentage of error is about one in a billion billion digits. It has been estimated that human beings making calculations average about one mistake per two hundred digits. The heart of an electronic computer lies in its vacuum tubes, or transistors(晶体管). Its electronic circuits work a thousand times faster than the nerve cells in the human brain. A problem that might take a human being two years to solve can be solved by a computer in one minute, but in order to work properly, a computer must be given instructions — it must be programmed.

Computers can be designed for many specialized purposes — they can be used to prepare payrolls(薪水册), guide airplane flights, direct traffic, even to play chess. Computers play an essential role in modern automation in many plants and factories throughout the world.

61. The speed with which an electronic computer works depends on its ______.

C. vacuum tubes, or transistors

D. instructions

64. A large computer can add or subtract ______ times a second.

A. a thousand

Passage 3

How can a single postage stamp be worth 16,800?

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value.

The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius,a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer —Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps.

Before the order was filled and delivered,a ball was planned at Mauritius?s Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words ‘Post Office’instead of ‘Post Paid’on the several hundred stamps that he printed.

Today there are only 26 of these misprinted stamps left — fourteen One-Penny Orange Reds and twelve Two-penny Blues. Because of the Two-penny Blue?s rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as 16,800 for it.

61.A postage stamp?s value to collectors is raised if ______.

A.there are few others like it

B.there are no errors on the stamp

C.a mistake is made in the printing

D.both A and C
